Since Simbioza Records released his debut EP in early 2019, Pattern Tusk has remained self releasing and sharing his inspirations with a small following. Naturally gaining attraction from friends, few that would go on to road test many unreleased tracks from 2019 and 2020. Over the last year Pattern Tusk has collaborated with various labels, including the release of his debut LP on Tzinah records at the start of 2021. With exciting plans and releases soon to come, Pattern Tusk is beginning to find his groove. Here is a blend of some his newer work in the form of an own productions mix, showcasing the studio hours of his last couple of months.

Phonicast 020: Pattern Tusk (unreleased own productions)

Following the release of debut EP "Numeral" (2020), Swiss drummer & producer Philippe Adam continues his sonic journey by paying tribute to a penchant for booming sub-basses, intricate percussion and gloomy soundscapes. Having since moved to Berlin, numeral picks up on very current feelings of melancholy, longing and disorientation that originate in the constricting reality of 2021. Nevertheless, in addition to the somewhat eerie mood, a touch of confidence shimmers through, which reminds us of the nights in which we could still enjoy the beats in dark cellars pounding from booming boxes.

The single track "Landing" emerged trough a collaboration with English producer Will Brown aka Brecon, who first gained attention in 2018 with his debut EP "Cairn" and who his best known for his remixes for Max Cooper, Rob Clouth and Morcheeba. Brecon's signature synth arpeggios and melodic piano parts simultaneously complement and contrast the ominous atmosphere created by numerals careful arranged production. The result is a persistently evolving four-on-the-floor dance track with a great payoff.

This week we are back with a dark set delivered by @harpmusiic, twin brothers (@untitledsubdmusic & @dealmeidasp) from Brasil. .subd made his debut last year and left quite an impression. His brother is also not new to making deep journeys, which made the duo inevitable to do a new mix for our podcast series. Their identical sound can be derived from their own productions as well as their label: @solidorecords. With hAarp’s first release on Fratii.ro last year, they launched their new alias collab and it won’t be the last one. Keep an eye out!

The Brazilian brothers made a considerable journey compressed into nearly 2 hours. Their selection is purely based on deep and dark gems, gathered together from friends and recent favorites. Expect a trip filled with rollin basslines, hypnotic elements, weird sounds and twisted vocals. Enjoy hAarp’s first podcast together!

To most, the three Romanian artists that make up the live performance group Amorf need little introduction. Especially not in these pages. However, Vlad Caia, Cristi Cons and Mischa Blanos will always be a new and exciting discovery to somebody. The musical output from Amorf has almost come almost exclusively via Cristi and Vlad’s Amphia imprint but has also seen widescreen outings on Sushitech and Understand.

As impressive as the musical output from the Amphia trio is, a recorded live set is always best enjoyed in person. For most the option to jump in a taxi and head along to the club or festival that they might be headlining just isn’t even remotely an option. @ocumusic‘s passion for deep analogue sounds and grooves is all-consuming. Ever since he was a teenager, his whole life has been devoted to feeling, sharing and shaping hip-rolling house, dub and techno rhythms and textures. With his projects, he wants a more precise mix of musical genres in order to create something that closely approaches the original sound, with the use of analogue machines as well as external effects, which characterize those particular soundwaves that are shaking the soul while maintaining all the hot flavours. Throughout time, his productions have been dispatched through labels like @DetroitSide, Body Parts, Wrong State Recordings, CELO Rec, IWW, Arupa and Capodopere, among others.

Consisting of No Replay, Pedro Bucarelli, and Zakov, rising act Triad brings us back to the infamous Albanian beach with a hell of two hours full of grooves and good vibes. Coming in hot for its second outing is Anthea & Velasco’s PILLZ imprint, this time they turn to Oshana to take care of business. Chunky dance floor action with an attitude from the Berlin based artist as she showcases her characteristic sound once more. The four track “Letting Go'' EP explores extensive territory, meandering between distinctive shades of electro, breakbeat, techno and acid energy from an outer place. 

First up is “Vindicator”, a tightly arranged trip, bubbling from the word go, leading you down a path of tension before opening up into a mysterious frenzy, eccentric synths wandering around the powerful forward motion of the track. Further spaced out transmissions that pack a punch in title track “Letting Go”, despite the raw tenacity of the track you can easily become lost in the depth of the production.  

Tasteful retro drums pave the way on the flip side in “Jah Rules”, conversing blissfully with the squelchy bass tones that flash in and out. Closing off the “Letting Go” EP is “E Motions”, a fierce electro whipper, ready and waiting to be propelled into a club setting, circulating the room, simmering as it begins to build a unique atmosphere on the dance floor, allowing the imagination to wander. 

A powerful quest through Oshana’s versatile vibe, essential underground moods for the hazy hours of the night.

-このミックスはどちらで収録したものですか？

僕にとって客がいてもいなくてもクラブでレコーディングするのがベストなんだけど、残念ながらこのミックスは家でレコーディングしたんだ。アナログ、デジタル両方使っているよ。


-このミックスのコンセプトがあれば教えてください。

中古で買ったレコードと新しい楽曲をブレンドすることがこのミックスのコンセプトなんだ。これからリリースされるトラックも複数入ってる。


-最近の活動を教えてください。

Closing set at Organik Festival 2019 in Hualien, Taiwan. Last 1,5 hours was a b2b with Diskonnected. 

Picture this: A slow steep drive down through a narrow jungle path, 
the sound of distant ocean waves, frogs, and insects is all you hear until suddenly the jungle opens up and you've arrived at Organik Festival.

Located on a secluded beach on the Taiwan east coast facing the seemingly infinite Pacific with awesome mountain rocks and jungle kneeling to it. A beast of a brand new model Funktion One sound system tuned to perfection and a rare gathering of the most loving and kind people you can imagine. 

This is the spirit of Organik. Nature, quality, peace, and a big coherent mix of dreamy techno, ambient, experimental, house, and disco. Personally have I never experienced a better festival. Was such a pleasure and honour to close the festival on a late Sunday night playing after Dorisburg. I got around different styles and wanted to play a non linear set and instead take people on a journey. I hope you feel some of the festival vibe in the recording.

The last hour and a half my friend and Smoke Machine Taiwan resident joined me in a b2b showing a rare housy side of his palette.
