"The sun of a mediterranean April began to warm my sad and disheartened soul from a period psychologically long and heavy to endure. A long period that has severely tested the peoples of an entire planet. I knew that to get out of it I would have to feed my spirit with music. But I was looking for a different kind of music, far from everything I had created so far. The desire to create something syncretic, transversal, highly energetic and spiritual, rich, ancestral and melodic, grew in me. I took a cue from this global situation to think about our destiny, about our sense of belonging to this place and this time. So I looked for a sound that was stripped of any categorization. A sound capable to elude any scheme by borrowing instruments, sounds, melodies from all over the world and blending them together. Whether it was a japanese taiko, a blues or latin melody played on the guitar, a duduk (and, why not, a panflute) or the voice of an opera singer no longer mattered. These elements so distant and different from each other had to dialogue together. I asked my best friend, Ueps, to accompany me with his guitar: I needed his company to face this sonic journey. Nowadays, the name Kaöb can be thought of as Arno Brak's alter ego and it is certainly a chance for the French electronic music producer to discover another side of himself, especially knowing that he has been producing music for almost a decade under his namesake. Arno is a free-spirited person who grew up surrounded by the intensity and color of an artistic family, whereas this restless adventurer had travelled through 30 countries, and still counting... 

In order to unveil this new chapter in his artistic career, he takes a different approach from his earlier productions. The three-track EP titled “Pangaea” invokes the most frequently referenced supercontinent Pangaea that incorporated almost all the landmasses on our planet, and the pieces now account for Earth's current continents. Pangaea existed about hundreds of millions of years ago. That is long before humans started to evolve. 

Nevertheless, it is within this geologic history that he moulds an action-packed adventure beyond tracks whose pace encompass mysticism, nature and a straightforward genre fusion. “Mbuti Aruwimi” makes reference to a native people of the Congo who live strongly connected with the jungle near of the river Aruwimi. “Noüs Sphaira” is a Greek word that designates the sphere of human thought which brings together all the cerebral and mechanical activities of memorization and information processing. “Kaakelimbo” closes the selection with its hypnotic mantra-type stylish. 

Without any doubt, the EP reinforces the feeling that we are part of the same family in the experience of life. It also includes a dynamic playing, culminating in a crystal clear tribute to multiculturalism, to unity, to human consciousness. Humankind, animals, plants, ancestors, past lives. A marvelous world.

We celebrate two years of Shika Shika with the release of our third compilation: Eco. 

Eco sums up what Shika Shika is about - the global reverberations of styles, genres, traditions and sounds moving around the world and fusing to create inspiring new music. We call it music without borders and on Eco we present 11 tracks that are exactly that. 

The tracks we hand-picked for Eco draw inspiration from traditional rhythms, stories and melodies and fuse them with individual inspirations, sounds from nature and electronic music. This is exemplified on Di Laif’s anthemic opener “Paso Por el Fuego” or Guazú’s incredible “Pava de Monte” featuring Wenceslada. Some artists like Jin Jerei and Oxhalá take us on a journey deep into their roots while others like Didacte and O.R. create atmospheric textural, electronic-organic soundscapes. Ibu Selva’s “Chega de Esperar” is a rework of a Brazilian agrarian reform anthem while Klik & Frik offer up a beautiful edit of Hassan Ben Jaafar, a master of Moroccan Gnawa music. 

It is hard to believe it has been two years since Shika Shika was started as a platform to showcase some of the music we truly loved from the thriving community from Sao Paulo to Seoul. Two years of connections, exchanges, ideas, new sounds and, most of all, incredible support and feedback from the people who listen & buy this music all over the world. We started Shika Shika as a way to give exposure and support to this community, sharing 70% of all the profits with the artists directly, and are inspired to continue pushing the music we love. 

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. We all appreciate it dearly.

In December 2018 our journey brought us up the mountains around Minca in Colombia. The folks from Aloha Ke Akua Retreat asked us to do a three day long sound healing workshop in which everybody was invited to play in our eigenklang installation. 

Accompanied by the birds and our friends Biomigrant, Elli and Dani we created magic soundscapes - inspired by the jungles around us. For this Voodoocast we took the sweetest spots out of the 9 hours of recorded sessions in the Maloca, mixed it with some field recordings and did some editing here and there.

The nature of the arts is one of those ancient enigmas which keeps thoughtful minds constantly philosophizing on its power. The mystery of art is deepened by the fact that inspiration can burst at anytime; any sound or fleeting glance can trigger a masterpiece. How can that be explained? We don’t know, and maybe we never will, but what matters to us is tending to that inspiration, and the conditions in which it thrives. This is the story of MA, the latest EP by Batu Ozer, which we are happy to bring to our listeners today. Old recordings of saz or string instruments resembling long-necked lutes, triggered the creative genius of the artist, and five new aural gems were the result.
The title of the album means “water” in ancient Turkish language. Its sonorities and motives evoke the elegance and preciousness of the old Anatolian history. Sounds of spilling water remind us of the fountains found in the courtyards and gardens of gilded palaces. Gentle choirs blend with lutes and finger percussion, effectively transporting us to the public intimacy of the ‘Arfana’: the public musical gatherings of the old times. All of the artist’s productions reflect this ancient beauty, which skillfully revisits and elaborates with electronic effects, resulting in a timeless weave of antiquity and modernity.

The next chapter on our journey is with the two talented musicians Dario Klein & Marten Sundberg. They teamed up together in Cologne to create the „Mikasi Project“.

The use of digital and classic tools and instruments creates a dark downtempo composition combined with techno influences, which you can expect on this release.
