Aula Árabe Universitaria 4

Our program Aula Árabe Universitaria is back with this conference, at which analyst Hayder al-Khoei explains the current situation in the country.

We are just a few months away from the twentieth anniversary of the war in Iraq, launched by the US in March 2003, when it sent 160,000 soldiers with the support of the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland. According to the former president of the United States, George W. Bush, that invasion would lead to the “liberation of Iraq.” Two years later, during his speech at the Fort Bragg military base (you can watch the full speech in English by following this link), Bush argued that, as a pillar of his “war on terror,” eliminating terrorists who “know that as freedom takes root in Iraq, it will inspire millions throughout the Middle East to demand their freedom as well.” However, the reality in Iraq today is radically different, and the region, whose popular demands of 2011 have been silenced, is no better off politically, economically or socially.

At this opening conference in the new Aula Árabe Universitaria 4 event series organized by Casa Árabe and held with the cooperation of the Master’s degree in Contemporary Arab and Islamic Studies (MEAIC) at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, analyst Hayder al-Khoei examined current event in this key country in the stability of the Middle East, in terms of the American concept of democracy, in a nation mired in internal struggles, fighting between armed militias, with a failed government plagued by corruption, and the state’s sovereignty violated on a daily basis. The author was accompanied by Carmen Rodríguez, lecturer in the Department of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid, and Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe's International Relations Coordinator. Hayder al-Khoei is the head of external relations at the Al-Khoei Institute in Iraq, where his work focuses on intra- and inter-religious dialogue in the Middle East region. Prior to this, he was a member of the Middle East and North Africa programs at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and the European Council on Foreign Relations, where his research focused on political and security-related developments in Iraq and Syria. He earned a Master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and another Master’s degree in Islamic Studies from the Islamic College of London.

AAU 4.1  Iraq nearly twenty years after its “liberation”

Casa Árabe organiza un encuentro con las periodistas Lola Bañón (Universidad de Valencia) y Cristina Sánchez (RNE).

Oriente Medio es un territorio en continua disputa estratégica. Paradójicamente, a pesar de los intereses compartidos y la proximidad geográfica y cultural, los medios españoles han venido disminuyendo sus coberturas sobre la zona. Una de las razones ha sido la crisis económica que provocó la disminución de corresponsalías estables en la mayoría de los medios, a excepción de algunos públicos. Oriente Medio únicamente vuelve al foco con los ciclos de agudización de conflicto, en muchas ocasiones con las narraciones de periodistas freelance a los que sólo se les compra la crónica cuando tiene elementos de violencia y espectáculo.  

Lola Bañón, periodista y profesora de la Universidad de Valencia, nos hablará de como las consecuencias que se derivan de esto concluyen con un sesgo evidente en la representación de los países de la zona, una mirada parcial y descontextualizada que se traduce en la pervivencia del prejuicio hacia las poblaciones y en una alineación progresiva de los relatos sobre el mundo árabe no siempre con criterios periodísticos profesionales y sí con las líneas de la política exterior española y europea.

Por su parte, Cristina Sánchez, periodista de RNE y corresponsal en la zona, nos contará desde su experiencia las dificultades logísticas y el coste económico que supone cubrir los conflictos en Oriente Medio sobre el terreno, en particular en Siria, Iraq y Gaza como ejemplos en primera persona. De aquí, la relación entre la difusión en medios de comunicación españoles y la presencia de periodistas desplegados, dado que sin inversión en profesionales sobre el terreno no hay coberturas. Tras esto, hablará de los distintos formatos audiovisuales con los que ha trabajado para abordar distintas temáticas en Oriente Medio, con el docuweb en formato podcast "Vivir Gaza" como ejemplo, y sobre la importancia de los testimonios personales para explicar el contexto.   

Se trata de la segunda sesión del programa Aula Árabe Universitaria 4, organizada en colaboración con el Máster Universitario de Periodismo Internacional de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), a cargo de Lola Bañón, periodista y profesora de la Universidad de Valencia, y Cristina Sánchez, periodista de RNE, y que contará con la participación de Amal Abu-Warda Pérez, profesora de dicho máster, que las presentará, y Olivia Orozco, coordinadora de Formación y Economía de Casa Árabe, que hará la moderación.

AAU 4.2 La cobertura de los conflictos de Oriente Medio en los medios españoles

Tercera conferencia del programa Aula Árabe Universitaria IV, a cargo de Laleh Khalili, profesora de política internacional de la Queen Mary University de Londres.

Con la participación de Ángel Rodríguez García-Brazales, coordinador del Grado de Filosofía, Política y Economía de la UAM y director del Máster de Inteligencia Económica y Geopolítica de la misma universidad, Berta Álvarez-Miranda, profesora titular de Sociología de la UCM, y Olivia Orozco de la Torre, coordinadora de Formación y Economía de Casa Árabe, quien modera la sesión. 

La conferencia ha sido organizada en colaboración con el Grado de Relaciones Internacionales y el Máster de European Union and the Mediterranean: historical, cultural, political, economic and social basis de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y el Grado de Filosofía, Política y Economía de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, y constituye la tercera sesión del programa Aula Árabe Universitaria IV.

La vida cotidiana de los marinos que navegan por los mares árabes y que prestan servicio en los puertos árabes a día de hoy está determinada no sólo por sus interacciones diarias entre sí y con sus oficiales (que a menudo son de otras nacionalidades), sino también por las transformaciones corporales que experimentan en su relación sensorial con el mar y las estrellas, el clima y la tecnología que les rodea. El cuerpo del marino es el punto de apoyo sobre el que se combinan de forma compleja e inesperada las asimetrías del poder a nivel mundial y en el lugar de trabajo, las largas tradiciones y convenciones de la navegación, y las subjetividades de género y raza.  

En la conferencia se hablará no solo de los salarios robados y de los barcos de hambre gestionados por compañías navieras rapaces y no reguladas o del poder afectivo de la soledad y la pérdida en el mar, sino también de los momentos efímeros de alegría y solidaridad forjados a bordo de los barcos, y de los placeres de la llegada a los puertos. Al centrar la atención en la vida corpórea del comercio en el mar, se dará también atención a las exhortaciones de las feministas y los estudiosos del capitalismo racial para que se enfoquen en las vidas de los olvidados o marginados, en el contexto de la acumulación de capital y las jerarquías de raza y género.

The everyday life of seafarers steaming across Arab seas and serving Arab ports today is shaped not only by their daily interactions with one another and with their officers (who are often of other nationalities), but also by the corporeal transformations they experience in their sensory relationship with the sea and the stars, the weather, and the technology around them. The body of the seafarer is the fulcrum upon which global and workplace asymmetries of power, long traditions and conventions of seafaring, and gendered and racialised subjectivities all conjoin in complex and unexpected ways.  

The conference will speak not only of wages stolen and hunger ships managed by rapacious and unregulated shipping companies or the affective power of loneliness and loss at sea, but also the ephemeral moments of joy and solidarity forged aboard ships, and of the pleasures of arrival at ports. In focusing on the corporeal life of commerce at sea, we’ll pay heed to exhortations of feminists and scholars of racial capitalism to centre the lives of those forgotten or dismissed at the conjuncture of capital accumulation and raced and gendered hierarchies.

AAU 4.3 The Corporeal Life of Commerce at Sea

Quinta conferencia del programa Aula Árabe Universitaria 4, a cargo de Mustapha Taibi, profesor de traducción e interpretación de la Universidad de Western Sydney (Australia).

Los códigos éticos estipulan que los intérpretes profesionales deben interpretar fielmente la totalidad del discurso de las partes interesadas, incluso cuando se trata de lenguaje ofensivo o soez. Al mismo tiempo, algunos intérpretes, por razones personales, culturales o profesionales, piensan que en situaciones de tensión y conflicto deben mediar entre las partes, no solo interpretar. En el caso del lenguaje soez, muchos tienden a bajar el tono de las expresiones en cuestión o incluso omitirlas. 

En la primera parte de su conferencia, el profesor Mustapha Taibi hablará de los resultados de un trabajo de investigación realizado en Australia en el que intérpretes de árabe, chino y español tenían que interpretar ciertas expresiones ofensivas en un interrogatorio policial simulado. En la segunda parte, entablará un diálogo con los estudiantes y el público sobre la distinción entre interpretación y mediación.

Casa Árabe organiza esta quinta sesión del ciclo Aula Árabe Universitaria 4, a cargo de Mustapha Taibi, profesor de traducción e interpretación de la Universidad de Western Sydney (Australia), en colaboración con el Máster en Comunicación Intercultural, Traducción e Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos, de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. Mustapha Taibi 
Mustapha Taibi es profesor de traducción e interpretación de la Universidad de Western Sydney (Australia) y editor de la revista Translation & Interpreting: The International Journal of Translation and Interpreting Research. Sus actividades docentes e investigadoras se centran en la traducción e interpretación en los servicios públicos. Entre sus libros más recientes destacar: Translating Cultures, con David Katan (Routledge, 2021); Multicultural Health Translation, Interpreting and Communication, coeditado con Meng Ji e Ineke Crezee (Routledge, 2019); Translating for the Community (Multilingual Matters, 2018); Community Translation, co-authored with Uldis Ozolins (Bloomsbury, 2016) y New Insights into Arabic Translation and Interpreting (Multilingual Matters, 2016).

Aula Árabe 4.5 ¿Interpretación o mediación en el ámbito policial? Cuando las palabras son palabrotas

Sixth lecture of the Aula Arabe Universitaria 4 programme, by Adam Hanieh, professor at the University of Exeter.

The Gulf states remain a critical zone of global oil production and exports, despite some recent diversification in their economies. For this reason, Adam Hanieh`s lecture, Professor of Political Economy and Global Development at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, will survey the new trajectories of the Gulf’s oil in global capitalism, focusing on the deepening interdependencies that are emerging between the Gulf states and East Asia in both crude oil exports, and crucially, downstream sectors such as petrochemicals.

The lecture will map these interdependencies, including the new forms of corporate power that are consolidating between the two regions, and it will also ask what these developments might mean for the political economy of the Gulf states and their traditionally strong alliances with the US and Western Europe. Finally, the lecture will explore the implications of these new inter-regional linkages for the struggle against an oil-centred global economy.

Casa Arabe is organising this sixth session of the Aula Arabe Universitaria 4 programme in collaboration with the UAM's Master's Degree in International Relations and African Studies and the Master's Degree in Political Science and Public Affairs at Saint Louis University (Madrid Campus). Representing those university programs, the session will count with the participation of Marta Íñiguez, Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and Barah Mikail, Lecturer of Political Science and International Relations Programme at Saint Louis University – Madrid Campus. Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe's Education and Economics Coordinator, will moderate the lecture.

Adam Hanieh is Professor of Political Economy and Global Development at the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His current research focuses on issues of political economy, oil, and capitalism in the Middle East. His most recent book is Money, Markets, and Monarchies: The Gulf Cooperation Council and the Political Economy of the Contemporary Middle East (Cambridge University Press, 2018), which won the 2019 British International Studies Association, International Political Economy Group Book Prize.
