Casa Árabe y el Ministerio de Cultura organizan una conversación sobre resistencia cultural, acompañada de una lectura dramatizada entre el dramaturgo Ismail Khalidi y los intérpretes Samy Khalil y Beatriz Mbula. 

El día de la Nakba conmemora el 15 de mayo de 1948, cuando el Estado de Israel declaró su independencia sobre casi el ochenta por ciento de la Palestina histórica. En el proceso, más de 800.000 palestinos fueron expulsados de sus casas y tierras, mientras que 531 pueblos palestinos fueron borrados del mapa. El trauma que provocó es conocido como la Nakba, “catástrofe” en árabe. Pero los palestinos también se refieren a al-nakba al-mustamirra, la “Nakba continua”, entendida como un proceso continuo de desposesión y limpieza étnica. Los últimos diecinueve meses de campaña militar y bombardeos sobre Gaza, a los que se han sumado nuevas amenazas de expulsión a su población y niveles de violación a los derechos humanos inusitados, han hecho que ya se hable de una nueva nakba en pleno siglo XXI.

La dramaturgia de Ismail Khalidi, nacido en Beirut de padres palestinos y criado en Chicago, recorre el legado de la Nakba palestina en el último siglo a través de obras como Tennis in Nablus (2010) o Sabra Falling (2017) pero también se hace eco de otras muchas catástrofes en el mundo. En conversación con el actor Samy Khalil y la actriz Beatriz Mbula, quienes también participan en una lectura dramatizada, el dramaturgo aprovecha esta mesa redonda para reflexionar sobre el proceso de escritura dramática y la escenificación de la resistencia cultural en contextos de ocupación, invasión y exilio.

Ismail Khalidi. Nacido en Beirut de padres palestinos y criado en Chicago, Ismail Khalidi es un dramaturgo y director que ha escrito, dirigido, actuado y enseñado a nivel internacional. Las obras de Khalidi incluyen Tennis in Nablus (Alliance Theatre, 2010), Truth Serum Blues (Pangea World Theatre, 2005), Foot (Teatro Amal, 2016-17), Sabra Falling (Pangea World Theatre, 2017), Returning to Haifa (Finborough Theatre) , 2018) y Muertos son mi gente (Noor Theatre, 2019). Las obras de Khalidi se han publicado en numerosas antologías. Sus escritos sobre política y cultura han aparecido en The Nation, Guernica, American Theatre Magazine y Remezcla. Tiene una maestría en escritura dramática de la Escuela de Artes Tisch de la Universidad de Nueva York.

Samy Khalil. Nacido y criado en Madrid de padre palestino y madre asturiana, Samy Khalil es un actor de teatro y televisión que ha participado en diversas producciones audiovisuales y teatrales tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. Comenzó su carrera dentro de la compañía La Joven Compañía, dirigida por José Luís Arellano, donde representó más de 500 funciones tanto en Madrid como de gira nacional. Entre estas obras destacan Fuenteovejuna (Lope de Vega, 2012 y 2015), El Señor de las Moscas (William Golding, 2013/2014), y La Eneida (Virgilio, 2021 y 2022) está última como Candidato a Mejor Actor de Teatro en los Premios MAX (2022). Ha participado también en obras del Centro Dramático Nacional (CDN) como Dentro de la Tierra (Luis Luque, 2017) y Los últimos Gondra (Josep María Mestres, 2022). En televisión ha trabajado en series como El Príncipe (Mediaset, 2014), Los Nuestros 2 (Mediaset, 2018), El Cid (Amazon Prime, 2019) y Eva y Nicole (Atresplayer, 2024). Su implicación no solo con la causa palestina, sino también con el teatro y la cultura de nuestro país, hacen que Foot suponga su primer reto formal y oficial bajo el plano de la dirección artística.

De la Nakba al teatro

El 28 de mayo de 2025, Casa Árabe acogió el acto de conmemoración del primer aniversario del reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina. Con las intervenciones del ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, UE y Cooperación, José Manuel Albares, junto al embajador de Palestina en España, Husni Abdel Wahed, y el director de Casa Árabe, Miguel José Moro Aguilar.

Durante el evento se leyó el poema "Como la flor del almendro allende" de Mahmud Darwish (traducción de Luz Gómez) y hubo una intervención musical a cargo del laudista sirio Hames Bitar.

Acto de conmemoración del reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina

En el marco del aniversario del reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina por España, Casa Árabe proyectó el jueves 29 de mayo en Madrid el documental ganador del Oscar 2025 "No other land". Tras la proyección tuvo lugar un coloquio que puede escucharse en este canal.

Basel Adra, un joven activista palestino de Masafer Yatta, Cisjordania, lucha desde su infancia contra la expulsión masiva de su comunidad por las autoridades israelíes. Documenta la erradicación a cámara lenta de los pueblos de su región natal, donde los soldados desplegados por el gobierno israelí derriban poco a poco las casas y expulsan a sus habitantes. En un momento dado, conoce a Yuval, un periodista israelí, que le apoya en sus esfuerzos.

Se trata del documental ganador del Óscar en su edición 2025 y, para muchos, el más relevante del año. Un acto de resistencia creativa en la búsqueda de justicia para el conflicto palestino-israelí. Profundiza en un conflicto histórico que vive su peor momento en un film que tiene capas, humanidad y toda la esperanza que se puede tener en estos momentos.  

Hace un año, el 28 de mayo de 2024, España, Eslovenia, Irlanda y Noruega se sumaron a los 143 de 193 miembros de Naciones Unidas que reconocen a Palestina como Estado.

Coloquio tras la proyección del documental "No other land"

Casa Árabe presenta esta charla con Tanya Traboulsi y Tamara Kalo, dos de las artistas incluidas en la muestra "What Lies in Between", ganadora de la convocatoria NUR-PHotoESPAÑA 2025. Las acompaña la comisaria, Ana Belén García Mula. 

Tres artistas —Taysir Batniji, Tanya Traboulsi y Tamara Kalo— nos invitan a contemplar, desde una perspectiva íntima y sin ornamentos, la compleja realidad de su esquina del mundo árabe. Son rincones marcados por la reconstrucción, la pérdida, y la resiliencia.  

Aunque sus trayectorias difieren, coinciden en un relato que atraviesa sus obras y las dota de una fuerza poética que trasciende lo personal.

Lejos de un enfoque estrictamente documental, esta muestra propone una inmersión en capas más profundas de sentido, aquellas que raramente alcanzan los titulares. A través de la imagen como herramienta expresiva —capaz de transformar y sanar—, los artistas reconstruyen las narrativas fragmentadas de contextos heridos por la violencia y el desarraigo, reinterpretando sus vivencias desde lo simbólico y lo estético.

Tamara Kalo, profundamente conectada con la memoria viva del territorio, rinde tributo al olivo, emblema milenario de permanencia y armonía intergeneracional. En su trabajo, también dirige la atención hacia uno de los rascacielos más emblemáticos de Beirut, una antigua prisión que hoy alberga a numerosas aves. Aunque la naturaleza lo ha reclamado, el edificio sigue en pie, ya que su derribo resulta inviable por su alto costo, dejando así una huella dolorosa en el paisaje urbano de la ciudad.

Tanya Traboulsi, en cambio, nos propone una mirada íntima y humanista de Beirut previa al reciente estallido del conflicto. A través de sus memorias personales y su reencuentro con la ciudad tras una larga estancia en Europa, Traboulsi retrata una Beirut apacible, impregnada de quietud y resistencia. Su enfoque, delicado y honesto, nos guía por una ciudad cargada de nostalgia y marcada por la fortaleza emocional de sus habitantes.

En el marco de la inauguración de la exposición, las dos artistas conversan con la comisaria Ana Belén García Mula. Presenta Karim Hauser, coordinador de Programas Culturales de Casa Árabe.

Fotografía, memoria y resiliencia: lo que queda entremedias

Casa Árabe has organized this talk with Tanya Traboulsi and Tamara Kalo, two of the artists forming part of the exhibition What Lies in Between, winner of the NUR-PHotoESPAÑA call for entries in 2025. They will be accompanied by the exhibition’s curator, Ana Belén García Mula.


Three artists, Taysir Batniji, Tanya Traboulsi and Tamara Kalo, invite us to contemplate the complex reality of their corner of the Arab world from an intimate, unembellished perspective. These are places marked by reconstruction, loss and resilience. Although their trajectories differ, they share an undercurrent which runs through their works and instills them with a poetic force that transcends the personal. Far from a strictly documentary approach, this exhibition proposes an immersion into deeper layers of meaning which rarely reach the headlines. Using the image as an expressive tool capable of transforming and healing, the artists reconstruct fragmented narratives about places damaged by violence and uprooting, reinterpreting experiences there on the basis of the symbolic and the aesthetic.

Tamara Kalo, deeply connected to the living memory of the territory, pays tribute to the olive tree, an age-old emblem of permanence and intergenerational harmony. In her work, she also draws attention towards one of Beirut’s most emblematic skyscrapers, a former prison that provides a home to many birds today. Although nature has reclaimed it, the building is still standing: its demolition is unfeasible as a result of the huge expense required to take it down, thus leaving a painful scar behind on the city’s urban landscape. 


Tanya Traboulsi, on the other hand, offers us an intimate, humanistic view of Beirut before the recent conflict broke out. Through her personal memories and reunion with the city after a long stay in Europe, Traboulsi portrays a peaceful Beirut, filled with both stillness and resistance. Her delicate, honest approach guides us through a city charged with nostalgia, while also marked by the emotional resilience of its inhabitants. 


As part of the exhibition opening event, the two artists will be speaking with the curator, Ana Belén García Mula. The event will be introduced by Karim Hauser, coordinator of Casa Árabe’s Cultural Programs.

Casa Árabe y la embajada de Túnez en España organizan esta conferencia impartida por Mohamed Sami Bchir, profesor del Instituto Superior de Bellas Artes de Susa.

El diálogo entre el arte tunecino y la cultura andalusí demuestra la naturaleza interterritorial del patrimonio humano y su capacidad para conectar el mundo en toda su diversidad. Esta convergencia artística y cultural pone de relieve la profunda influencia de al-Ándalus en la identidad artística tunecina, explorando su impacto desde perspectivas cronológicas, estéticas y simbólicas. La interacción entre estos dos mundos va más allá de una mera yuxtaposición de elementos, sino que revela una compleja estratificación donde las tradiciones árabo-musulmanas se transforman a través del contacto con la modernidad.  

De hecho, esta interconexión subraya la profundidad de la historia del arte visual tunecino y sus ricas y diversas influencias, desde los pintores orientalistas que visitaron Túnez a principios del siglo XX hasta las grandes figuras del arte tunecino, como Yahia Turki (1902-1969), considerado el padre de la pintura moderna.

Esta cita para abordar el cruce de caminos entre el arte tunecino y la cultura andalusí pretende servir como refugio de la memoria inmortalizada, donde la obra de arte se embarca con audacia en una batalla implacable contra el olvido. En el marco del "Foco País: Túnez" en Casa Árabe y con la exposición “Iluminaciones Tunecinas” de telón de fondo, el acto quiere rastrear el recorrido de una pintura emblemática para sumergirse en sus propios impulsos, donde el espacio limitado de la obra abre un campo infinito de interpretación.

Mohamed Sami Bchir es un artista visual multidisciplinar de la ciudad de Monastir. Doctor por la Sorbona en Ciencias, técnicas y estética de las artes, actualmente es profesor-investigador de Artes Plásticas en el Instituto Superior de Bellas Artes de Susa. Su preocupación práctica y teórica se centra en los territorios actuales de la pintura en la era de la experimentación contemporánea. Mohamed Sami Bchir cruza en su práctica varias posibilidades heterogéneas e integra a través de la materia pictórica una cierta estética de lo imprevisible. Antiguo residente de la Cité Internationale d'Ars de París, ha firmado varias exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Túnez y en el extranjero. Fue Presidente Artístico de las ediciones 15ª y 16ª del Festival Internacional de Bellas Artes de Monastir.

Arte tunecino y cultura andalusí: cruce de caminos

Casa Árabe and the Tunisian Embassy in Spain are organizing this conference given by Mohamed Sami Bchir, a professor at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Sousse, in Madrid on Thursday, June 19.


The dialogue between Tunisian art and Al-Andalus culture demonstrates the inter-territorial nature of human heritage and its ability to connect the world in all its diversity. This artistic and cultural convergence highlights the profound influence of Al-Andalus on Tunisia’s artistic identity, exploring its impact from chronological, aesthetic and symbolic perspectives. The interaction between these two worlds goes beyond a mere juxtaposition of elements, also revealing a complex layering in which Arab-Muslim traditions are transformed through contact with modernity. 


Indeed, this interconnectedness highlights the depth of the history of Tunisian visual art and the rich and diverse influences to be found therein, from the Orientalist painters who visited Tunisia in the early twentieth century to the great figures in Tunisian art, including Yahia Turki (1902-1969), considered to be the father of modern painting. This event to take a look at the crossroads between Tunisian art and the culture of of Al-Andalus is intended to serve as a refuge for immortalized memory, where the work of art boldly embarks on a relentless battle against oblivion. 


Within the framework of the “Country Focus: Tunisia” at Casa Árabe and the exhibition “Tunisian Enlightenments as a backdrop, the goal of the event is to trace the path of an emblematic painting so as to become immersed in its own impulses, where the limited space of the work opens up an infinite field of interpretation. 


Mohamed Sami Bchir is a multidisciplinary visual artist from the city of Monastir. With a PhD from the Sorbonne in Art Sciences, Techniques and Aesthetics, he is currently a professor-researcher of Plastic Arts at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Sousse. His practical and theoretical concerns focus on the current territories of painting in the era of contemporary experimentation. In his practice, Mohamed Sami Bchir crosses through several heterogeneous potentials and integrates a certain aesthetics of the unpredictable through his pictorial matter. A former artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale d’Ars in Paris, he has appeared in several solo and group exhibitions in Tunisia and abroad. He was Artistic President of the fifteenth and sixteenth editions of the International Festival of Fine Arts in Monastir.

Tunisian art and culture of Al-Andalus: a crossroads (FRENCH)

Casa Árabe and the Elcano Royal Institute are organizing this round table discussion about the war that has broken out between Israel and Iran, threatening to spread regionally, within the context of the catastrophe that has been taking place in Gaza over the past twenty months after the attack by Hamas of October 7, 2023.


The attacks by Hamas in the fall of 2023 triggered an Israeli military response on a massive scale, leading to the destruction of the Gaza Strip and killing tens of thousands of people while displacing its 2 million inhabitants, bringing the region to its knees. Although the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Hamas and Israeli leaders and the International Court of Justice is investigating Israel for possible genocide, Israel has decided to launch a vast offensive against Iran. 

The EU has been debating over its response to the Israeli onslaught against Gaza and how to stop the large-scale bloodshed and humanitarian catastrophe. It recently decided to launch a review of the Association Agreement with Israel, but the UN Conference that was to be held in New York from June 17 to 20, aimed at ramping up global efforts to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, has been cancelled. The European Union again appears to be divided over the response to the war which Israel has initiated against Iran. 

The debate will be based on the ideas suggested in ⁠the article “Four Ways in Which Europe can Re-engage to Stop the Gaza Catastrophe,”⁠ recently published by the Elcano Royal Institute.  

Hosted at Casa Árabe in Madrid, the event will bring together well-known speakers and thinkers, including Josep Borrell, a Distinguished Senior Research Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute and former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the Vice-President of the European Commission from 2019 through 2024; Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff, a former EU representative in Palestine; Martin Konecny, Director of the European Project for the Middle East; Munir Nuseibah, a Palestinian human rights attorney and scholar, presented by the Association of the Spanish-Palestinian Community of Jerusalem; and Sonia Boulos, a professor of International Human Rights Law at Antonio de Nebrija University. Each of them will be exploring the urgent role which Europe can and must play in the response to the crisis.

The event will begin with words of welcome given by Miguel Moro Aguilar, the General Director of Casa Árabe, and Charles Powell, Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, with the goal of critically assessing policy options and promoting meaningful engagement rooted in human rights and international law.

Can Europe re-engage to halt the catastrophe in the Middle East?

Ahmed Aboul Gheit acudió a la sede de Casa Árabe para presentar la última edición de su libro, "Testigo de la guerra y de la paz". 

En el acto, celebrado el 26 de mayo en el Auditorio de la institución en Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62) el máximo representante de la Liga de los Estados Árabes habló sobre sus vivencias en momentos cruciales del siglo XX y XXI en la convulsa región de Oriente Medio.

El exministro de Exteriores Ahmed Aboul Gheit relata en esta obra su experiencia durante la guerra de 1973 junto al consejero de Seguridad Nacional Mohamed Hafiz Ibrahim, un periodo de dos años durante los cuales Egipto se preparó para la guerra con Israel. El autor continúa con el relato de la propia guerra y las negociaciones que la siguieron. En la segunda parte del libro, Aboul Gheit narra los entresijos de la construcción de la paz con Israel a través de su experiencia como miembro, desde 1977, de una delegación encargada del seguimiento del proceso de paz. El lector podrá descubrir en las páginas de este libro que, en muchas ocasiones, los detalles pequeños permiten entender e interpretar eventos y situaciones de gran magnitud.

Aboul Gheit ha ocupado puestos clave, como Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Egipto (2004-2011) y Representante Permanente ante las Naciones Unidas (1999-2004), además de participar en diversas misiones diplomáticas. Fue parte del equipo negociador de los Acuerdos de Camp David en 1978, que culminaron en el tratado de paz entre Egipto e Israel, un hito en la diplomacia regional.

En su labor al frente de la Liga Árabe ha abogado por una mayor implicación de la comunidad internacional en la resolución de conflictos, especialmente en el proceso de paz palestino-israelí a través de la reactivación del proceso de paz bajo el marco de Naciones Unidas. Su trayectoria le ha valido reconocimientos internacionales, consolidando su papel como defensor del diálogo y la diplomacia como herramientas esenciales para la resolución de conflictos y el fortalecimiento de la cooperación en el mundo árabe.

El Secretario General de la Liga Árabe presenta su libro en Madrid

Ahmed Aboul Gheit came to Casa Árabe’s headquarters to present the latest edition of his book, “Witness to War and Peace.”


At the event, held at our institution’s Auditorium in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62) on May 26, the utmost representative of the Arab League spoke about his experiences at crucial moments in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries within the unstable region of the Middle East. In this book, former Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit recounts his experience during the 1973 war, alongside National Security Advisor Mohamed Hafiz Ibrahim, a two-year period in which Egypt prepared for war with Israel. The author continues by providing an account of the war itself and then the negotiations which followed thereafter. In the second part of his book, Aboul Gheit narrates the inner workings of peacebuilding process with Israel through his experience as a member of a delegation in charge of monitoring the peace process as of 1977. In the pages of this book, readers will discover that small details often make it possible to understand and interpret events and situations of a great magnitude. 


Aboul Gheit has held key positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt (2004-2011) and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1999-2004), as well as being a member of various diplomatic missions. He formed part of the negotiating team for the Camp David Accords in 1978, which culminated in the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, a milestone in regional diplomacy. 


In his work at the head of the Arab League, he has advocated for greater involvement by the international community in conflict resolution, especially in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process through the reactivation of the peace process within the framework of the United Nations. His career has earned him international acknowledgment, thus strengthening his role as an advocate for dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for conflict resolution and the strengthening of cooperation in the Arab world.
