In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This bonus mix rounds off the 1980s portion of our chronology, shining a light on the somewhat maligned sub-genre of Hip House. It's reasonable to say 1989 was this sound's moment in the sun and this mix and the majority of tracks in this mix hail from that year. Featured artists include some of the biggest names of the era who dabbled in the sound (Big Daddy Kane, EPMD and King Sun) alongside those with a more direct affiliation with the genre(Doug Lazy, Fast Eddie, Tyree). The cover artwork references the interior gatefold of the 1988 Stylus Records compilation ‘Hip Hop & Rapping in the House’.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #5 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1991, a year remembered fondly for its many anthems – Tribe’s ‘Scenario’, Nice and Smooth’s ‘Hip Hop Junkies’, Showbiz and AG’s ‘Party Groove’ and many other underground club smashes saw their release during the year. 1991 was also a solid year for long players with stand out debut LPs from Black Sheep and Main Source amongst others. Debut LPs from Del the Funkee Homosapien and Cypress Hill both broke preconceptions about the West Coast sound in very different ways. Cover art pays homage to LA based independent Delicious Vinyl whose early 90s roster included the Pharcyde, Def Jef and Masta Ace among others.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Edition #5 (1991) mixed by Chris Read


This is an extended version of a mix broadcast on BBC 6 Music, 22nd Feb 2025, celebrating the first phase of Wu-Tang Clan solo & side projects, three decades later.

At the end of 1993 we entered the 36 Chambers. In the period following, before Wu-Tang Clan's second LP, the solo projects of the hip hop killa bees really took flight, initially with the RZA's side-project Gravediggaz, and Method Man's debut LP 'Tical' in 1994. Things really heated up in March 1995, with the 'Return to the 36 Chambers' from the late ODB, quickly followed by Raekwon's 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' in Summer and GZA's sophomore album 'Liquid Swords' in Winter, culminating with Ghostface Killah's 'Ironman' in 1996. 30 years on, BobaFatt mixes up a selection of 36 beats from these six Staten Island albums, Block Party style.

Nb: Parents, even though this one's extended it still includes clean versions throughout, because Wu-Tang is for the children, after all.
