In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #1 documents Hip Hop’s birth on wax and its formative years, 1979-1983, from the disco and boogie influenced sound of the late 70s through to the drum machine led tracks of the early 80s.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #2 of this mixtape series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1988, a year which many consider the ‘golden year’ of the late 80s. As samplers took over from drum machines as the producer’s tool of choice, the James Brown drum sound ruled supreme and lyrical subject matter explored new territory. With seminal (and at the time controversial) album releases from the likes of Public Enemy and NWA, this was a year that changed hip hop forever. #HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #4 (1989) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This bonus mix rounds off the 1980s portion of our chronology, shining a light on the somewhat maligned sub-genre of Hip House. It's reasonable to say 1989 was this sound's moment in the sun and this mix and the majority of tracks in this mix hail from that year. Featured artists include some of the biggest names of the era who dabbled in the sound (Big Daddy Kane, EPMD and King Sun) alongside those with a more direct affiliation with the genre(Doug Lazy, Fast Eddie, Tyree). The cover artwork references the interior gatefold of the 1988 Stylus Records compilation ‘Hip Hop & Rapping in the House’.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Bonus Mix #2 (Hip House) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #4 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1990, a year when the genre really spread its wings with a diverse range of new sounds breaking in all corners of the US and overseas. 1990 is probably most celebrated as signalling the birth of the ‘afro-centric’ era, with debut albums from X-Clan, Professor X, Poor Righteous Teachers, A Tribe Called Quest and many others hitting stores. But 1990 was also an important year for the artists elsewhere on the Hip Hop spectrum: Compton’s Most Wanted, Capital Punishment Organisation and Above The Law all released debut albums proving LA had much to offer outside the mainstream popularity of NWA. Aside from new developments, established artists including LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy and EPMD all dropped classic long players.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This bonus mix follows last month's Hip House round up with a further set of tracks from the hybrid genre, this time featuring not only tracks from Hip House pioneers, but also Hip House remixes of cuts by Chubb Rock, The DOC and others that emerged at the turn of the decade. The cover artwork references 1988 Stylus Records compilation ‘Rap Trax’.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this fifth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1990, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.
