Multiinstrumentalist composer Nick Dallett is one half of the electronica group Cats Cradle Robbers.  This is a side account where Nick executes and shares musical experiments and remixes that may or may not wind up on a CCR album.

Steve and Kristi Nebel (pron. knee bull) learned to perform during ten years on the road working in cocktail lounges, and more years on the road in more recent years performing their own songs in folk clubs, and at festivals.  Each is an accomplished instrumentalist having played many styles of music over their years of experience. Kristi’s interest in harmony singing comes from a family background of barbershop singers, which she has shared with Steve.  Kristi plays bass guitar, and Steve plays guitar.
      They are currently touring to promote a project suggested by two of their friends from the folk clubs of Northern England, Jimmy and Val Monteith-Towler, better known as “jiva”.  It is a recording of just the two of them with their instruments as they would sound live.  It includes new songs, and old “favorites” of the folk club audiences.  This is their tenth duo recording, and the first recorded as just a duo (no help from their friends).  Steve engineered, and produced the project in their studio.
    The Nebel’s experimented with ensemble playing in the ‘90s with The Filucy Hootchie Kootchie Band/The Madrones, only to end up as a duo in the end.  They have experimented with other bands, not as bandleaders, but as band members.  For a few years with some friends they played cowboy music.  This gave them some experience singing complex harmonies as per Riders in the Sky, or Sons of the Pioneers.  They currently play with Kristi’s western swing/Americana band “Cowgirl’s Dream” which is an outfall of Kristi’s solo album by the same name (Detour).  Steve is the lead guitar player in the band which features Kristi as a vocalist, and as a bass guitarist.  The band also includes producer/accordionist Toby Hanson, and drummer Mike Friel.  Steve and Kristi continue to play dance music as a duo to earn a little money.
     Kristi is the kind of singer who stands out from the crowd.  She stopped a concert promoter in his tracks at the NW Folklife Festival in 2011 who attempted to recruit her for one of his projects based on her outstanding vocals.  Of course she was singing one of Steve’s songs, which may be part of the attraction that was felt by the promoter.  This isn’t an unusual occurrence though.  She was originally trained as in acting, and as such stood out from the crowd early on, being chosen as the lead in many of the plays she acted in in high school, and in college, later becoming a truly outstanding character actor.  You can feel her dramatic experience in her phrasing, and live as part of her performance.  Kristi is also an outstanding bass player.  She worked with a 20’s & 30’s jazz ensemble for a number of years.  Steve drank martinis with them.  She is also in demand in their studio when a client needs a bass line recorded.
    Steve is becoming known more and more for his songs which detail the lives, and experiences, not only of himself, but of the people that he meets from day to day.  Influenced by the songwriting of John Prine, Paul Simon, as well as lesser known songwriters such as Hobo Jim of Homer, AK, and T.R. Ritchie of Moab, UT his songs reach out to inform you about the life of the intinerant artist, but more the lives of urban personalities, and working men, and women who inhabit the world that he lives in.  Some of his songs are politic, this being a world that seems to more and more cry out for people who will stand up for the mass of humanity that occupies this planet.  The song that people seem to best remember him for speaks to the idea that a little humility wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing in this world.  The song is titled “Big Floppy Hats”:  “Everyone would wear big floppy shoes; Everyone would wear a big floppy hat; Everyone would have a big red nose; Who could be mean in a world like that?  In their big roomy pants - and their big floppy hat”.  You can also find him singing about life in County Durham, or the lives of the fishermen that he and Kristi spent so much time with in their years in Alaska.
