Fresh off being crowned as one of our top labels of 2018, TT (@tobago-tracks) is continuing its industrious and impressive form into 2019 with a new EP from South London-based artist hmurd (@hmurdoch). 

The UK outlet has earned respected status for its dedication to pushing a vanguard of experimental producers making music on their own terms, and hmurd’s three-track outing ‘Boycott Ethical Consumption’ bolsters the imprint’s next-level repertoire. 

EP closer ‘Shepard’s Delight’ is an intense, compelling club concoction that places you in the swirling frenzy of 3am with a clarity of thought declaring: “this bangs”. Piercing tones are grounded in earth-shattering bass, raising adrenaline, before collapsing into a chaotic catharsis of clattering percussion and demented church chimes.

SYSTEM EP is the third release by New York-based, Monterrey-born producer and DJ, Debit. It is a tribal guarachero reconstruction, and Debit is the first Mexican woman in history to create within this unique musical framework. 

Debit approaches the project as a percussion-led study of the genre and its sonic potential, harnessing its triplet-driven beat and fusing it with techno and industrial sounds, bringing a new texture to this distinctly Northern Mexican regional music. 

In the absence of the characteristic high-pitched melody lines and the usual ‘prehispanic’ samples commonly present in tribal guarachero, the listener’s attention is drawn towards the timbres and harmonics of the beats. 

Conceptually speaking, SYSTEM is derived from Debit’s close reading of Tzotzil (a Mayan tongue) language books, wherein the world is broken down into categories in aid of translating cosmovisions. SYSTEM asks us to look at typically assimilated and unquestioned social phenomena, such as the alphabet or numbers, from a structuralist perspective, and to go beyond our accepted realities.

DECISIONS is pleased to welcome Hong Kong based producer ASJ to the label with ‘The Illusion Of Separation’. Deploying a blistering and emotive sonic palette, ASJ explores emotional alienation, difference and the social unity that nonetheless binds us — themes that are especially pertinent in the wake of Hong Kong’s recent political upheaval and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journey begins with ‘Melancholy’, a distortion-streaked meditation on loneliness and isolation. The richly melodic ‘Pendulum’ speaks to the potential for personal growth that stems from an awareness of the cyclical nature of positive and negative mind states. Imagining life as a video game, ’The Game Host’ features playfully twisted vocals and syncopated percussion to evoke agency beyond systemic rules, while ’Chant To Eternity’ offers an ultra tough sonic aid to personal empowerment by drawing on the spiritually cleansing power of chanting. ‘Sublimity’ completes the release. Arcing from musique concrete into ethereal vocals before arriving at a hypnotically elevated plateau, ASJ considers changes of state in the field of chemistry as an analogue to moments of transcendence in our daily lives.

A distilled and ambitious body of work that captures the deeply personal, social and metaphysical realms, ‘The Illusion Of Separation’ is an affecting and timely new entry into ASJ’s catalogue. A ‘Magic Eye’ style stereogram artwork (view at a large size!) further embodies the illusory and cosmic dimensions of the release.
