In response to Disquiet Junto Project 0502: Global Swarming
The Assignment: Create a swarm of imaginary insects.

Conceptual Process: The title comes from the protagonist of Franz Kafka's Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) - Gregor Samsa, who awoke one morning to find himself transformed into a "monstrous vermin" "insect" "cockroach"... a variety of English translations for the original "Ungeheueres Ungeziefer" which is difficult to translate (and the translation of which has been heavily discussed, here's a nice overview if you're not already familiar: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/on-translating-kafkas-the-metamorphosis). I have a lot of empathy for Gregor which extends to empathy for insects in general whereby I try to resist the instinct to be disturbed by them - so I initially set off on this trying to make a "swarm" from the Juntonian insect bank that was not disturbing or frightening, and was instead either empathetic or like a cool bug party that I'd like to join. After about 5 minutes of editing, the bug party became a cacophony and then whittled down into something slightly more disturbing, or at least intense in a way that is uncomfortable at several points. I couldn't escape the notion of an encounter with a swarm of insects, however unique and beautifully imaginary they are, being disturbing, unnerving, uncomfortable. So I went with it, trying to make something where the listener (and protagonist in the story of this swarm) might be disturbed a few times as the swarm gets closer and swells around them, but is ultimately left in a state of some relief, and curiosity once the swarm decides to move on. Because doesn't the swarm sound a bit like mechanical insects, potentially like a swarm of man-made insect-drones that could be surveilling millions of dimensions of your physical and mental existence? What do they want? What are they looking for? But at least they didn't investigate for long and decide to keep moving - but what data did they capture, or might they have captured something more, or other, than data...?

Technical Process: Selected the insects listed below. Made 4 different test tracks with several loops of each insect, and various effects on each layer of each insect. Played with the balance so it sounds a bit like they are coming from one side, enveloping you in a few swells, then move along to the other side and off into the distance. Then layered the 4 tests tracks on top of each other. 

This track features several varieties of the following insects from the schwärmeliche Junto-Menagerie, and includes no other sounds:

Disquiet Junto Project 0502: Global Swarming
The Assignment: Create a swarm of imaginary insects.
One of the creatures we invented has been reproducing and now they are swarming in our house. What to do then?

Earlier this year, I bought a bass clarinet (my grade school instrument) and then a Piezobarrel pickup mouthpiece.  I've played around with it a bit using my Empress Echosystem and Empress Reverb boxes and discovered that talking through the mouthpiece has an extremely haunting effect.

For this Junto, I took aspects of me trying to cover the backing track of "O Superman" and ran it through the dark filter of Scott Walker's "Tilt" album, particularly the song "Patriot (A Single)" with the "Luzerner Zeitung never sold out" lyrics.

The entire track is me talking through the reeded mouthpiece's pickup and processed through the two Empress boxes.  I made a bunch of little sections, edited the best, and assembled in my DAW into what you hear.

It's been a while since I've made anything new, so it was wonderful to knock this out - and so quickly.

This track follows the inspiration of the Disquiet Junto Project 0504: An unintentional everyday noise - here picking nuts from a glass-jar - provides the basis for the composition. It sets the rhythm and the different sound layers - and then creativity is flowing, taking the track to new directions.

In the first 5 s you hear the original recording of the cashew-filled glass-jar, in the next the imitation by a group of instruments, and in the third 5 s the recording and the imitation together. The recorded sound can also be heard (treated with effects) later on several occasions.

The Assignment: What does a moment (or a day) in the life of a jellyfish sound like to a jellyfish?

I hate to be lazy and use something I was working on instead of something new sparked by the actual challenge, but sometimes time is our tyrant and I was fascinated by this forgotten masters, some live-in-the-studio improvisations with awesome French drummer André Charlier that I discovered some days ago.
Captured while we were warming up for a recording session years ago. This was on tape but never used nor listened to, and I've been taking some nice bits out of it for further use. These are all ad-lib, abstract and weird soundscapes, no groovy bass 'n drums at all.
This is an abstract, floating groove-less & creepy track.

And I think it fits the challenge perfectly cause, o be honest:

- Invertebrate folks listen to beat-less music, I'm pretty sure. 
- Jelly fish are creepy little  beings.

A day in the life of a jellyfish, floating wherever the current takes it. I wanted to make something dreamy and relaxing, but also kinda fun! 

I used a bunch of Ableton packs for this - mainly Spectral Textures & Chop & Swing.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
