A year in the making, these are the (at time of initial inclusion)underexposed tracks which have found favour with us in 2018. Either we've not heard that many, at least on Soundcloud, or it's been a poor year seeing as we've usually managed a few of these previously. Ho hum. Hopefully 2019 will be more fruitful.

The dream pop ofJulian opens this weeks list, and definitely doesn't outstay its welcome, leading into the more conventional pop of Sea Pinks. Then it's all change as the reggae sounds of Chronixx lead us into an extended dance section this week, starting with the slow burner of Oeil Cube, followed by EDM from Soulwax, and Real Lies, some house from Stefan Braatz, and then an older banger from Avicii who tragically died this week. Some terrific Afro-funk from Supergombo then takes us to the closing soulful jazz sounds of The Rugged Nuggets. I'm a big fan of Chronixx, and I really like the Julian track, but Supergombo's "Marquis Warren" gets track of the week for this week.

On Trickster Blues, their new full length album for Cosmic Dreamer, RF Shannon take a drastic shift from the long form, pensive desert meditations of their previous record. “The process was a drastic shift from the one we took with ‘Jaguar Palace’ and I was hooked. It was a blast all of the time. We kept a quick pace due to external circumstances via random or otherwise inevitable interruptions, so we learned to take what we could get. If a take was good, it was a keeper, we didn’t second guess it. In just four days we had demoed the majority of my new material and it just felt so right.’’ explains Shane Renfro, the mind behind RF Shannon.

The final product of the seize the moment approach behind the writing and recording process echoes the themes Trickster Blues attempts to dissect. “The lyrics are about acknowledging consequences and saying "so what", the reward is worth the risk, etc. Its about feeling a pull, a calling, and dedicating to it hell or high water, whatever that may be. Its the heart of it all.’’ Renfro continues. To be able to listen and say “That’s it, thats the song. It is what it is, and we like what it is” Sounds a little underwhelming in that sense, but thats what I wanted. I just wanted the songs to speak for themselves. Our old material is challenging and dense, and I love it. I love the spaces we have created. But I wanted to record songs that could just stand alone and be what they are.''

Born out of natural and self-imposed boundaries, the final product is an album that lives in the sonic space between desert blues and old school R&B. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principal that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product, Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe its a terrible mistake, maybe its better this way” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. Thats kind of the Trickster in a way. Many different facets, but the name conjures a sort of pure whimsical mischief, a dose of raw wild impulse that reminds you to laugh at whatever it is thats happening.”

Demoed in four days in Marfa and recorded in two in Lockhart, Texas with the help of Jesse Woods and Will Patterson, the album is demanding in it’s immediacy while providing a raw and profound insight to the raw sonic & lyrical landscape Renfro & Co have crafted.

Jessica’s Brother release their second track, All The Better, following on from their well received debut Overnight Horror at the start of the year. 

Channelling the spirit of the Brothers Grimm to an otherworldly atmosphere, rich in jagged, uneven, perfect harmonies, All The Better is a hushed, eerie folk song. It explores the melancholy and optimism of breaching adolescence and the limbo before adulthood; a simple tale of growing up.

There are themes of joy, anger, silliness. The characters change, the instruments clamber over each other in a small room. Their shared influences include Silver Jews, Jason Molina, Richard Thompson and Neil Young. 

All The Better is their second single, following on from Overnight Horror from the tail end of 2017. A full length album is due in the summer.

The single artwork comes from Tom’s sister, the eponymous Jessica [Jessica Jane Charleston]. 

Jessica’s Brother first started playing together in October 2016 when Jonny Helm (drums, also of The Wave Pictures) asked Charlie Higgs (bass, previously of Ramshackle Union Band) to come and play some songs written by Tom Charleston (Jessica’s Brother). The trio clicked immediately, and just 9 months later recorded the album with Laurie Sherman at The Cube and with Darren Hayman. A few friends joined them in the studio, including Dan Mayfield on violin (Enderby’s Room) and Paul Rains on guitar and slide guitar (Allo Darlin’ / Tigercats).

“Jessica’s Brother’s shambling nerdcore is clearly a passion project intended to please only themselves. Good for them. Their pivotal number Polstead Instead, loosely based on the 1976 Jonathan Richman track New England, is a jingling rush that would have headed John Peel’s Festive 50 in another life.” The Guardian

After releasing debut single ‘Oceans’ at the end of 2017 and being featured in Upset Magazine, Alternative Press as one of the 20 bands you need to hear, and being asked by huge supporter Steve Lamacq to introduce themselves with a 60 second CV on his BBC 6 Music show, The Yada Yada Yadas have returned to show their songwriting chops once more in ‘Woke Up Strange’. 

This second offering from the band is made of sharp guitars, twisting together harmonically in all their fuzz and distortion, across a landscape of familiarity, forced under a more traditional pop songs skin. It's playful, aggressive, and fuelled with intention. In this latest installment from The Yada Yada Yadas, their US alt-rock influences really shine through, with tones reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis, and the playful craftsmanship and lyrical stylings of bands such as Pavement, Yuck, and early Flaming Lips. 

An ironic tale of the mundane and boxed in nature of northern life, Woke Up Strange provides an insight into the band on a social level though it’s relatable narrative. Here, The Yada Yada Yadas are more earnest lyrically than in previous offerings, more deliberate, and at times downright heavier musically. 

Speaking of the release, the band explain “Woke Up Strange is alternative rock in disguise. Hiding behind it’s unfolding overlapping hooks lay a pool of screaming guitars bathed in fuzz, rising upwards as they’re kissed by the light of the morning sun and born again to lay the foundations of a pop song. Narratively, the track has many insights to offer about the nature of conformity, the ever pesky and elusive ideological ‘Man’, and simple agreed fashion etiquette. Dynamic contrast is a huge part of our sound, and here in Woke Up Strange, this is demonstrated once more as screams dissolve into sweet melodies, and horrendous dissonance builds toward serene resolution.”

‘Woke Up Strange’ is set for release Friday April 6th 2018 via Silent Kid Records.

It’s hard to imagine that Juliana Daugherty’s softness and subtlety could materialize amid the tumult of current-day Charlottesville, VA, but every mode of being continues in the people of Charlottesville, as it does elsewhere, despite the impressions headlines might give. Despite the societal ills that dominate our screens, private struggles still exist, and Daugherty’s debut Light gives them palatable, manageable, and satisfying form.

“I wrote this record partly to strip mental illness of its power,” Daugherty says. She adds, “There is nothing useful or beautiful to be gleaned from the experience of depression.” Though this statement seems contrary to the romantic tone of Light, it’s refreshing to hear an artist speak of their own depression with objectivity, unwilling to be charmed by the gloom. Daugherty wields her songcraft like a sword, not a diary to be buried in a drawer.

As one listens, it becomes clear that Light was not a title chosen despite the gravity of its subject matter-- romantic struggle, abject depression, and throbbing vulnerability-- but rather in service of it. Light, so to speak, comes when we give shape to what haunts us.

Julian was formed in the summer of 2015, in a hot and sweaty living room in Washington, DC. The brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Julia Leiby, Julian’s early songs had a minimal twee-pop feel reminiscent of Beat Happening. But as the band grew and evolved over the last few years, so did their sound. Currently joined by Cale Cuellar (Tall Friend) on drums and Eric Zidar (Tosser) on bass, Leiby’s songs have moved in a hazier, more atmospheric direction on Julian’s latest release, the Real Distance EP.

Recorded at Gravesend Recordings in Brooklyn, the five songs are brief—only one of them breaks the two-minute mark—and freckled with twinkling guitar lines that bring The Sundays to mind. A photographer by trade, Leiby’s ability to think visually heavily influences their music; the whole EP plays like a softly-lit dream. There’s a muted urgency in each track, as though Leiby is fit to burst with earnest romanticism. But there’s self-awareness, too. On “S,” the darkest and most driving song of the bunch, Leiby almost chants a mantra: “Don’t touch me, / I own this body. / Stay away, / I’m not your prey. / I’m stronger than you think.” And it’s in that space between light and darkness, softness and force, that Julian’s songs find their charm.

"These are strange, uncertain times. It might seem odd to be full of the joys of spring right now, given the constant newsfeed of anxiety. But hear me out. Our songs are often described as bittersweet. The words may be ambivalent, or even on occasion downright sad, but the melody will usually be buoyant and bright. Bearing this mind we decided to go all out, and make something unequivocally happy for once. This song is unapologetic in its lack of irony. It’s a little three minute detour, a portal into a suburban garden shaking off the last frost, sunshine bouncing off dewdrops, saturation dialled right up. Pure, undiluted, deeply unfashionable, guitar oriented pop. We recorded and mixed it ourselves earlier this month, tracking at our practice space, and decided to throw it out there as close as possible to the time of its making. It’s best listened to out of doors. So take it with you next time you go for a walk, drive, pedal boat swan ride or whatever. Preferably somewhere with terrible 4G. And allow yourself to be transported, just for a moment, from the sheer fuckery of it all."
