After many years of ups and downs and a lot of pain and suffering my grandma passed away last week. It is always something sad when a loved leaves us, but it is a part of life. My grandma wasn't ready to die, she would have wanted to live an other 10 years, but unfortunately, her body was exhausted and couldn't longer support her living. Seeing her slowly die was very painful for our family, but it did give us the opportunity to start the process of saying goodbye and prepare for our separation. And most of all, knowing that her life was coming to an end, made those last moments together as a family extraordinary. And although she will be deeply missed, it is good that she could finally let go.

The first time my grandma was listening to my music, she closed her eyes and dazed away, and when the song was finished, she asked me rather surprised why the music was already finished. The music took her away, and she forgot about everything around her and she got lost in her thoughts. It was very relaxing she said. This was quite a remarkable, since my grandma never dazed away, she was always sharp and super alert. 

So in order to honor her one last time and celebrate her life, I decided to make this beatless version of Shelter in the Sky, of which the title suddenly is very relevant. Hearing this at the funeral on Monday was a special moment, and felt like a worthy goodbye!

This is my personal interpretation and adaption of a powerful song to honour Mother Earth. When we walk and dance, we feel Mother Earth under our feet. We drum on her like a large drum and are able to feel her heartbeat from there. 

It symbolizes that our own heartbeat and the one of Mother Earth are one.

I performed this song during the opening of The Morning Breakfast in Amsterdam, on the most beautiful final day of summer, 20 September 2020. The Morning is a breakfast gathering that celebrates human connection & mindful eating

The Spanish adaptation I made especially for this edition of The Morning: The Future of Farming. It was held at outside the farm, where Andres Jara, an Amsterdam-based farmer of Colombian origin, educated the guests on permaculture and biodynamic farming. 

Everything came together on this Morning. Our connection to mother Earth was celebrated in a deep, fun, loving and meaningful way.

Chef & founder of The Morning, Edwin Sander: "Food connects us to the land, it connects us to other humans, to life, because if we don't eat we die. It connects us with our identity, with rituals, with culture and nature. It connects us to everything around us. Yet, when we put it inside of us, it becomes us." 

During the opening ceremony of this Morning I was able to guide the guests into a few rituals, under which a grounding meditation and conscious movement. I read them a poem about the voice of Mother Earth and I performed this song. 

All of this to feel connected to nature and everything around us, bring calmness of mind, open our hearts, and from there, enjoy a nourishing three-course breakfast together. 

All the individual instruments and backings vocals were played, sang and recorded by myself. I am happy to hear what this song does to you.
