The highly prolific PROJECT AKC returns to Soma with his 3rd EP, ‘This Thing’. Becoming quite the favourite at Soma HQ with his signature rolling techno sound, PROJECT AKC yet again delivers 2 perfect dance floor burners.

‘This Thing’ holds nothing back as it launches off the EP with a perfect groove. Furious drum patterns kick this track into overdrive, backed with nicely pitched down vocals. AKC makes excellent us of FX as this track breaks down, falling over itself in delay and reverb and punches right back in with a solid rhythm. 

‘Adelaida’ keeps things on tougher tip. A perfectly layered low-end drives this track from the get go, sliced up with cutting percussion. The track builds rapidly, extra layers of percussion swarming in as AKC shows his skill by manipulate the intensity of the track dropping it perfectly every time. 

A consistent producer, PROJECT AKC never fails to deliver the goods and this EP is no different.

PROJECT AKC - This Thing (Soma 381d)

Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.” 

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

Pig & Dan make an energetic return to Soma with their first new material since the release of the epic 10 year anniversary album ‘Decade’ with ‘Broken Melody EP’. Dan & Igor are a powerhouse production team and these 3 groovy tech house numbers sit perfectly within the realms of the Soma output.

Broken Melody is a perfect, rhythmic opener for this EP. Spliced up vocals pop through an almost tribal bass line while bright percussion melds this track together nicely. Pig & Dan are masters of the solid tech house track and this slickly produced track is a great example of these guys at work.

A more melodic approach is brought in on ‘Something’s Going Down’. Short, delayed synth stabs float delicately while a deep vocal cut drops over the intro as the track builds slowly as the synth become more ethereal, with an almost Detroit influence. This track definitely screams, hands in the air, as the percussion finally drops after building the tension through the melody. 

Junglism rounds off the EP with its staccato rhythms and funked up drums definitely aimed directly at the dance floor. Pig & Dan once again show their mastery of production on this one as their skillful use of FX allows this track to flow perfectly. The track bounces well from growling dance floor stomper to almost trance-like euphoria with perfectly timed drops and even better use of programming. 

Pig & Dan have delivered another great EP to sit along side their already amazing catalogue of releases on Soma, always with a fresh and unique take on dance music.

As always Kling Klong gives space for new artists and supports upcoming talents. This time Martin Eyerer & Rainer Weichhold had no doubts signing this debut release from Stuttgart's dj/producer Ninetoes as 'Finder' is obviously a massive stand-out track which has the words 'summer hit' written all over it. So it was just easy to convince Leon and Re-UP from Italy to do the remixes and help to make this release even more oustanding.
