This is Stephen Strahle's riff, played with a slightly different harmonization by me, on a  loop-pedal.

This is a traditional negro work song. It is pentatonic, and is the sort of thing that slaves used to sing in the fields. I played two version of the melody on top of one another, with a time delay, as though the melody were a canon. The piece has strong self-similarity although it has more dissonance than a normal canon. I have added a driving bass line.

To my ears, this sort of sound reminds me of the geometric patterns one finds in Islamic art.

Work song 031 1

This is electric guitar, played with a slide and fed through a sustain pedal, and recorded on a loop pedal.

I used a socket wrench that I inherited from my deceased father, as the slide. When I played the piece back, I was reminded of one of my father's favourite sayings, which was to "play it straight." 

I am not certain whether he would have approved of this use of his sockets... so the title is ironic.
