We invited our good friends the Patchouli Brothers for a special guest mix session just a few days ahead of their set in Montreal for the annual Mundo Disko party presented at Pride Festival (August 13th. Infos here)

We gave the talented DJ/Production duo and brothers in disco a simple challenge: make us a mix featuring their favorite Montreal discothèque records.

“We focused on some of our Montreal favourites from the 70s and 80s.  We missed a few though. Amra. Nina Dunn. More! 

Most of the Canadian disco we love is from Montreal! There are definitely a few great Toronto records from the time, but a lot of what we dig comes from or is connected to Unidisc and their sub labels. Think there was just more of it produced in Montreal as the scene was stronger? The Montreal music we enjoy is more of that electronic, euro influenced sound, while the Toronto stuff we’ve found to be more connected with classic r&b and/or Caribbean influenced. We like the likes of Crack of Dawn, Liberty Silver, Everett Haughton, from Toronto, just to name a few to not leave our hometown outta the picture! “

MIMS Guest Mix: PATCHOULI BROTHERS (Dodo Records) — Montreal Disco Special

Triple Grammy nominee and US vocalist Raheem DeVaughan joins Boddhi Satva for this Afrobeats tinged slice of RnB in a track that pulls in influences as diverse as DeVaughan's New Jersey and Washington DC upbringings and Boddhi Satva's pan-African, Ancestral Soul cultural sensibilities.

Taken from Boddhi Satva's collaborative Manifestation album, Finesse Me is a track that will grace the radio airwaves and the dancefloor with its wonderful vocal performance and lilting melody laid over tuff beats.

Raheem DeVaughan's own musical history comes from an impressive lineage as the son of Jazz and Classical cellist Abdul Wadud and cousin of Grammy winning Soul vocalist Chrisette Michele. His own successes can be heard via his prolific output of eight studio albums plus two more collaborative album releases with Apollo Soul and Bee Boy$oul respectively, his BET Awards and Grammy nominations.

Boddhi Satva's Manifestation project is an album that thrives on collaborations with other artists to create a soundscape of Black music styles and genres that blend to create a melange of genres. Finesse Me is a track that fuses Afrobeats with a traditional US RnB style to massively impressive effect.

Farah Harriche aka Fahrenheit is a kid of the 90's based in Montmartre, Paris who's ears have been shaped by hippie rock and world music. 

For this playful mix, she has curated new wave and disco tracks of the 80's, her favourite decade to play with, sharing with us uplifting and rhythmic vibes to enlighten the beginning of Autumn. 

In her words:

Juno Records Review:

Kaninchenbau's main collaborators Sokur and The Funk District helm this latest intergalactic journey in the form of 'All Over You'. It's a superbly tasteful and deep disco joint with lush synth work and the sort of groovy drums that make every head to the floor and get down. Next to the original is a classic 'House Mix' version and then comes two epic remixes on the flip. Both are from accomplished and ever busy Razor-N-Tape producers Nenor and DJ Vas who bring a real touch of classic to their work and offer a different look than the A-side.
