Trenches was written after Charlie visited the Guggenheim Museum in New York. There, he saw paintings by the artist Otto Dix that encapsulated life in the trenches from World War I. This song is meant to narrate a timeless sense of protest towards unfair political circumstances. What did a soldier feel like then in the trenches? And what do citizens feel like trapped in their own trenches of modern day society?
