What made you start DJ’ing?

I’d say what made me get into DJ’ing was my production, the more music I made the more I wanted to play it to people live.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

The funniest thing that's happened to me was after a Bohemia night. We got back to my flat for afters, but my flatmate was seeing this girl who lived on up the street. We end up taking all the equipment to her flat at stupid o'clock to find it's a 1 bedroom flat with 8 people there. I left after someone kept on offering me poppers.

How do you feel when you play music?

I feel like it's hard to describe, I'd say it's a moment you don’t realise has passed until its happened. When I first started playing my own music it was surreal to see people actually dancing to it to be honest.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

When a crowd dances to my music it's such a compliment for me. It's a back and forth I really enjoy especially when I’ve made something new.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Someone coming up and asking for the track ID, it's like a handshake. Or maybe some intense finger guns at the front of the decks.

Who’s your biggest supporter? Would you say it’s Elliot, your friend in the photo? How do you feel when he’s there?

I would say it’s always an influence having someone around doing anything creative, it takes the weight off your shoulders. It makes you step back and listen through another person’s ears to share a moment. Regardless whether Elliot's around or not I'd say he’s one of my closest friends and biggest supporters. He’s always been there to give me an honest opinion on what it is which I rate a lot in a person.

What made you start DJ’ing?

I actually haven't been into electronic music for all that long to be honest. My flatmate bought a cheap controller a while back and I had a little play about on it now and then which made me buy my own set and get into it.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

One of the best times I've had playing was one of the nights on a ski trip to Tignes where me and Rhys decided to start at 140 and just play old chavvy tunes all night. We thought it was hilarious and everyone was still going mad it was class.

How do you feel when you play music?

The thing I love most about playing music is being able to express the sort of music that I love and enjoy, it’s such a great feeling cause it's almost a showcase of what you're all about.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Seeing people enjoy the tunes that you play is the best thing about the whole thing. Seeing other folk appreciate the type of music that you have a genuine passion for is amazing, especially after you've taken time to hand pick those songs.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Once a girl in the crowd spoke to me after my set and said "I love watching you play so much cause it legitimately looks like you're having the best time and it's almost infectious", it was good to hear people enjoyed my shitty dancing haha.

What is your other passion? How does it relate to music?

I love being outdoors. I'm super into mountain biking and skiing and try to be out doing them whenever I can. Recently I've got into climbing too which has been class. Music relates heavily to the other things I enjoy because it can completely change the mood you're in and how much you enjoy it, like I'm always listening to music when cycling or skiing.

Mixing till 7am at new year to 3 people by the end because everyone else had fallen asleep.

There’s nothing better than the whole place dancing after a drop.

Did your siblings influence your love for music?

My brother influenced me a lot for guitar based music but it was mostly my dad when it came to electronic music, he played a lot of 808 state and happy Monday’s when I was younger.

What made you start DJ’ing?

The ability to build something new out of the selection of existing and preferably raw materials. Some grains, salt, spices and a touch of powder gets you a new recipe you share with your mates who are hungry. Oh yeah, the power of unity through music. On the dancefloor, there’s no strangers only friends you haven’t met yet. Leave your chaos and reality behind. As the sun rises, your soul goes back down to earth and gets ready for a new day.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Probably rave at the cave night, after a bumpy and steep journey, bringing back home mostly case studies instead of actual people. 2 lesbian cats who kept on spooning (literally and figuratively) all over the crib. Got blinded at first by their innocent looks, turned out to be a fat mistake. Was fun though at first.

How do you feel when you play music?

I feel very happy when I play. Whether it’s for a big crowd, a small gig or just by myself I feel at peace with myself and everything seems to flow. It Gives me a break from this hectic and competitive world we live in and allows me to focus on the actual moment and just enjoy it.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

It feels great to see that people enjoy my music. I believe that music heals people and creates strong bonds between them. To be the person who is responsible for creating this peaceful and fun atmosphere where you make people forget about their issues and giving them joy is my ultimate goal as a DJ.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

You are sexier than your music.

How do your homies like Ali G, in the pic, influence your music?

I think the fact that my homies are into different style of music has somehow influenced my style of mixing. Normally I am a very techno DJ but my homies being more into chill/groovy or funky while on the other hand some others more into breakbeat, experimental or tribal while some are really into classic Detroit/Chicago` house have derived my way of mixing. It made me more niche in terms of track selection, but I cover a wider range of genres from disco, house, techno or ambient/breakbeat/experimental. 

I think my homies most importantly helped me in finding my own taste and create an authentic style with my cultural influences and dig into Turkish/Anatolian sounds instead of trying to imitate what famous DJs are doing. Perhaps another factor is the fact that the scenes in Canterbury are mostly commercial dominated and so I had to alter my style a bit so that the crowd gets familiar more easily with the underground culture instead of slapping only hard techno which I ofc still do haha but more occasionally.

Oh and a shout out to Jayson from the Vinyl store the OG who I always go to and chill with, getting tracks and talk shit with. A lad outta Manchester with experience, who’s been a good guide in staying loyal to the underground!

I started learning from Soldan and seeing him getting into Rare got me pumped haha, cause I wanna join the best team in the deen.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Funniest DJ story is being so fucked at afters I didn’t have the speakers on for 10 minutes and was just playing through my headphones. Was too drunk until I looked up and realised ahaha.

How do you feel when you play music?

Playing music is the best high you can achieve and especially when you have a crowd going.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Seeing people play music as bad as it sounds makes you seem like a boss but also happy to see your skills doing its job.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

From a crowd a girl came up to me and told me a group of lads were complementing me to everyone even though I hadn’t met them.

How have your friends like Callum, influenced your love for music?

Bro the smile I see on his face when he plays genuinely hypes me up so much. I’ve been able to discover so many genres of tunes. I’ve also been exploring what I thought I hated at one time and I’m understanding it better.

What made you start DJ’ing?

I started growing a collection of tunes, decided to buy a small controller and started throwing parties at my halls in uni last year, usually as pres before big events. One time I pushed all the sofas back, so it made all the people get up and dance, that was a class feeling.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Was playing with Marcial in T2, this girl was saying to me how good I was in my ear, one thing lead to another and a lot of fun was had.

How do you feel when you play music?

I feel on top of the world, happy, passionate about the tunes I’m playing, I’m sharing out this good music I want other people to hear.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

I spend time finding new music to play out, so when I see people rating it as much as I do in the crowd it’s a huge rush of dopamine, I’m gonna miss in the next coming months.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

After having played in Siberia all night by myself before rare, Andy Buchan came up to me in tunnels and said that was a perfect bar set, that was so lovely to hear especially having been there all night, so it was all my own doing.

What is it like having your best friend, Keir, always there for you?

It’s so class always seeing him there giving it his all whenever I’m playing, he gets the rest of the crowd hyped too which is always a good thing.

BIO:

During his trip in Australia under the name of “Bōrga”, FAUCONVAL. developed a true love for industrial music that is now bringing power to the dancefloor. Influenced by the scene of Paris and Producers such as: TRBL, Farao, DYEN and MSKD. He has now developed his own style that can be referred to mental disturbing melodies and powerful Techno with a fine touch of industrial sequences. Always maintaining his extremely defined fast and dark Techno sound; emotions and mental journeys are always present in his DJ sets.

INTERVIEW:

What made you start DJ’ing?

My deep interest in music came from my Italian dad, he was a DJ himself and therefore introduced me to the DJ’ing side of music from an early age. I enjoyed playing for several years and Australia was my best experience. Nowadays I don’t play anymore since Ableton decided to marry me.

My love for digging new songs also played a big role. I always wanted to have exclusive tracks to share with my friends, so I always dug for hours and DJ’ing was perfect way to deliver these new gems. 

What’s your best DJ experience?

Open air set for a friend’s birthday in Ibiza with an amazing view and sunshine. I was done playing since I had played all my tracks. Then I was like that’s it I have nothing more to give you guys. And people just came to me: “Yo we don’t care play the same set again” after that I had the best time with friends, and this is something not to forget. The whole night and morning were perfect.

How do you feel when you play music?

At first, when I was playing under the name Bōrga, I was playing sounds that people like and most of the time I was only enjoying my end set when I could increase the bpm and finally play what I actually love. Under FAUCONVAL. I can just go crazy and all out and this is always giving me a huge smile. It is my sport!

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Motivation and energy to keep on learning. The crowd is the key. Making and mixing music is hard work, commitment and time. When you’ve worked hours on a long set trying to see different possibilities and outcome to fit at best the crowd mood and your own. It is always a pleasure to see smiles and happiness going on the dancefloor.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Once, after a 2h set I was having a beer and enjoying the next DJ’s performance, A group of people came to me and one of them said this was the best set he ever experienced. I saw the truth in his eyes, and this clearly is the purest source of motivation.

What’s your dream B2B?

People that have influenced me in music producing all these years are of course top 1 in my B2B dreams (DJ’s such as: Tim Tama, Ariod, MVTISM, ospïel, WAV_909, Absurd, Paramod, Rorganic and many others).

There is something I want to share as well in this interview. To me, without the help and knowledge of Aurélien V. I would never be that happy producing and learning about music. You’re the best thing that happen to me in the music world and I will never forget that. I thank you from the bottom of my heart Aurélien, thanks for all the good time, the knowledge, the tricks and the B2B’s we’ve done together.

What made you start DJ’ing?

A good group of friends I were going on holiday to a place in the highlands. As you can imagine, if you’re hugely into climbing hills and then climbing more hills. Then you won’t find yourself spoiled for choice on things to do. However, the great minds that were myself and a man named Aidan Brown decided to go halfers on one of cheapest set of decks we could find, we played around with them on holiday. Turns out, we weren’t that bad. It all started from there really. 

What’s your funniest DJ story?

I’m gonna level with you, the whole experience of playing is such a laugh in itself that I can’t really pinpoint anything specific. The whole group of boys at Bohemia provide me with a barrel of laughs every time. It’s a nice group to be a part of. 

How do you feel when you play music?

It is a completely immersive sensation. Almost as if the decks are playing me lol. Imagine that! Robots taking over and we’re the controllers. Not too bad if you ask me.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

I am a huge attention seeker, truthfully. It’s nice to be the focal point of a group of people. I honestly think it’s when I perform. It is difficult to truly captivate an audience; but when you do, it is very rewarding. 

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

I don’t know, I get so many! I kid of course. To be honest I find it more endearing when another DJ compliments me, I’m still relatively new to the game so it is important to me that people recognise what I am doing as good or bad. It is amazing the improvement one can make through making mistakes. I feel like every time I play there is a noticeable improvement compared to my last performance.

What’s the vinyl in the pic, does it have special significance to you?

Got it at complete random in a record shop, I forget where. So glad I picked it up, fave dance record by far, super funky it knows what up. And it cost me a measly £1.50. Just goes to show the dividends of taking a chance on the unknown I suppose.

What made you start DJ’ing?

I started DJing because It’s something i’d always been interested in but never had the equipment. When i got my first job when I was 16 i saved up and bought a cheap set of decks then worked my way up from there.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

I’ve not been playing out for long so I can’t really think of many funny stories. But here's the best I can think of:

One of the Bohemia acid nights a girl kept coming up to the decks demanding that I play Abba. Don’t get me wrong I love a bit of Abba but it doesn’t really fit in well with an acid night. Or maybe i’m wrong and She’s actually on to something? I’m sure there's an acid remix of Abba somewhere deep in a dark corner of soulseek.

Here’s another one, I threw a couple parties at my flat in Hillhead, invited all my mates round and then put it in the Hillhead groupchat too. Got really busy a couple times, way too many people crammed in that tiny flat. I didn’t really know any other DJ’s in Hillhead so I would just play all night myself haha. There was one time it was really busy, going really well but i needed to nip out for 5 minutes to get something. Some random guy came up to the decks with a USB and asked to play and i was like fuck it yeah, let him on so I could nip our for a bit. The guy started playing heavy and I mean HEAVY drum and bass, so I tried to be as quick as I can, nipped out, came back 5-10 minutes later and he’d cleared the place out with his tunes, literally everyone had left except maybe one or two people, couldn’t believe it hahaha.

How do you feel when you play music? // What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music? // What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Playing music, of any kind (whether that’s DJ'ing or playing with my band) is my favourite thing to do in the world hands down. There’s a buzz i get from it that’s like no other, seeing people dancing and enjoying the music is so fulfilling. If you’re making people smile, dance and enjoy themselves, you’re doing something right, i think that in itself is the biggest compliment a DJ can receive.

How much of an influence have your band mates, from the pic, had on your DJ'ing and musical taste?

They’ve had a huge influence on me musically in general. They got me into disco music which ties in well because the mix is very disco orientated. They also helped get me into other artists and genres i would never have considered and completely changed my opinion on pop music. (Not all pop music, but GOOD pop music.) they made me appreciate it for what it is and how well it’s been produced rather than just thinking all pop music sucks because it’s just cringy overplayed chart music. If you know what I mean?

What made you start DJ’ing?

I started my whole DJing thing back about in 2012, because of my dad being a DJ. He basically kicked started everything for me from equipment to tunes. 

What’s your funniest DJ story?

My funniest DJ story would have to be a house gaff I played at , and some dude who crashed it got really drunk ended up stripping naked and made a huge pentagram out of lighter fluid and set it alight while he did that he got on his knees and started screaming hail Satan was a funny sight to see at 3am.

How do you feel when you play music?

When I play my music, I zone out completely and become one with the beat and the energy in the room no matter what music I play without vibes there’s no meaning behind the music.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

When I see a crowd enjoying my music, I would have to say I feel amazing seeing people dancing and not on their phones and just living in the moment that would have to be the best feeling.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

After playing my first Bohemia after a long time away from the scene, I had a few individuals come up and say some I played a banging set and was super supportive of the music I played because before I played a lo-fi sound and at the event I got to play some banging techno and proved to myself I’m not a 1 trick pony hahahaha.

How would you relate DJ’ing to your other passion, skating?

I would relate skating with DJ’ing in some sense due to the culture that is behind it because your just chilling with the boys having a good time listening to tunes and vibing, I found with my skate crew we all liked different music and we all vibed with different sounds such as classic hip hop, heavy death metal , indie and techno. Just like dance music skating brings people together for a good time and lots of long-lasting memories.

INTERVIEW:

What does this image, 'the pillars' mean to you?

Space and what lies beyond has always been a fascination. What we have seen in the far corners of the universe as well as our very own Milky Way have been nothing short of phenomenal.

To me it always seems that there is something bigger going on than what we see, at any level you could think of. The fact that so many things have come to pass without us ever going to know about them, makes me always think of putting things in perspective.

The Pillars of Creation, one of the largest recorded objects in the universe, symbolise this view perfectly. The name comes from their composition, of the materials that one day make up stars. Their distance from us is thousands upon thousands of light years away, meaning that they have dispersed into nothingness long before the light even reached us. A great example of how truly colossal the scale of the universe is and how transient even the most magnificent sights can be.

This is why we always have to look forward, to keep exploring. It only takes to turn one corner to end up in some of the most beautiful, or dangerous, places mankind could ever be.

What made you start DJ'ing?

My journey into electronic music was very gradual, coming from a background in high-energy music like rock and heavy metal since I was a kid. The Prodigy (bless your soul Keith!) was a huge influence not only for being the first ever music I clearly remember hearing, but in my later years of school where they helped bridge the gap from aggressive rock music to aggressive electronic music. Soon after I discovered trance and house, and it was then I knew for sure I wanted to create my own stuff. This led me to pick up production, and as with many other folk, DJ'ing joined in on the fun as a natural consequence.

What's your funniest DJ story?

Definitely showing up in a space suit to play the Bohemia Halloween party - it was a space invasion after all!

How do you feel when you play music? 

I want to say it feels just good, but it's always more than that. To me sound (and music of course) always works with the other senses to create an overall narrative. It doesn't have to be conscious - like telling a story - but it always has to be going somewhere. There is always a next step.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

Believe it or not, it's not very often I play my own stuff out. It's not always I play sets where my own tracks necessarily fit in, because I like to explore a lot of different themes in different periods. Still, to me the best thing is when I drop in an original track and see people dance to it just as much as the one before it, and the one after it.

What was the most meaningful compliment you've received from an individual in the crowd?

It was at a packed Easter party on the Revolution terrace - I had prepared a huge batch of newly acquired tunes (as you do) and I really wanted to play a particular track, so I went for it. Midway through, some guy comes up and says "I think you're the first person in Aberdeen that I've heard play this guy, he's great right?". It really meant a lot more to me than just saying "love the stuff mate" and all that.

What made you start DJ'ing?

I started DJ'ing when my cousin Lewis first got decks it was just at pre-drinks he started showing me how it worked and that’s how justcuzz was born.

What's your funniest DJ story?

A funny moment of mine was when I was playing at home with a few pals before a gig - I was a bit drunk built a tune up just as it dropped I pressed pause on the wrong track. Me expecting a mad drop gave it full beans to the sound of nothing.

How do you feel when you play music?

I’m most definitely happiest when I’m playing music if I’ve had a shit day at work and I come home and jump on the decks it always lightens my mood.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

When I see people enjoying my music it’s a good feeling a buzz it also means all the practice in my bedroom is paying off!

What was the most meaningful compliment you've received from an individual in the crowd?

I’ve not not had too much experience with the crowd yet but other than you played well the best complement was “I only payed £5 to get in what a bargain.”

Who's your biggest supporter and how does it feel to have them around?

Erin’s definitely my biggest supporter she’s been to every set I played even before I knew her. Having her around when I’m playing is always good because she loves the music just as much as I do and seeing other people having a good time really boosts my confidence.

What made you start DJ'ing?

What made me start DJ'ing was pure interest, I wanted to learn how to mix songs I liked and how others have done though watching sets on YouTube. From that I got my first controller a few years back and never stopped learning. 

What's your funniest DJ story?

Funniest memory DJ'ing was at theatre lane afters , the place was packed and the fire alarm went off (well over the music so everything went off), everyone began freaking out thinking it was the police shutting down afters, little did people know but we had the most un-faulty working fire alarms on the market. I remember all of us trying to turn it off (this went on for a good few minutes but felt like forever) we where left with few options until Dykes started ripping the alarms off the ceiling (at this time everyone looking on confused to what is going on) which resulted in the alarm going off, everyone cheered and the music was back on and afters continued. 

How do you feel when you play music?

Playing music for me gives off instant happiness, playing by yourself or in front of your mates music can leave you feeling buzzed and can be a great mood booster. 

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

When playing music in front of people and seeing a positive reaction can really boosts the mood , especially if you see people having a good time to your own style of music and mixing techniques. 

What was the most meaningful compliment you've received from an individual in the crowd?

Every complement I get if its good or bad is meaningful, I'm always learning so any feed back is good feed back. Constructive criticism through feed back is what I find is the best complements as from that I can learn to become better.

How has travelling and visiting different scenes with friends influenced your taste in music?

Yeah seeing loads of different artist preform has definitely helped narrow me into finding my favourite type of music!

INTERVIEW:

What made you start DJ’ing?

I think getting more into electronic music generally was definitely a motivator, whereas before I would just enjoy it on nights out the last year or so has really been all about learning my own individual taste and then wanting to share that with others - mixing is definitely the means to that end.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Haha, well I’m still very much a bedroom jockey at this stage so I don’t have too much to share. I was at an afters once (completely out my bin) and ended up making a cheeky joke about some guy’s haircut for a laugh. Someone quickly informed me afterwards that the dude was in fact a certain famous guest DJ for Rare that had been playing that night. Don’t think he took it too well, yikes!

How do you feel when you play music?

It’s just a ton of fun, sculpting the sounds and mashing together your favourite songs to create something new will never get old.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

I’ve only really started making mixes since lockdown started, any feedback is lovely and makes me feel a lot closer to people that I wish I was dancing with during this time. Can’t wait to get back on the dancefloor!

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Haven’t received one yet just playing in my bedroom of course but I’m hoping I can improve enough to feel confident playing at a party once we all come together again. Baby steps!

How has the Aberdeen night life influenced your music taste and mixing?

Aberdeen punches far above its weight, there’s such a huge variety of events on that attract some quality DJs that do a great job of introducing some new sounds to the city. As for the home-grown talent we have right here, it’s class how close-knit the community is, personally I’ve been encouraged by others to start learning and it’s cool how welcoming the scene is in that way. I’ll miss the Granite City!

INTERVIEW:

What made you start DJ’ing?

I had just dropped out of a master’s course and knew I didn’t want to pursue a career in the fashion industry, so started looking for a new hobby. That’s when I considered getting my own decks as I had nothing to lose.

What’s your funniest DJ story?

Let’s just say by the time I had waited (very patiently I must add) for my turn on the decks at these afters, I wasn’t sober enough to play, so this guy was helping me mix and ended up doing it all himself. Afterwards my friend was like “omg you were great!”... little did she know I hadn’t done a thing except choose the song - which was a good one to be fair!

How do you feel when you play music?

It’s exciting cos growing up I was never massively into a specific music genre, so finding songs that I really connect with is all new to me. However, the best feeling must be when you mix two songs together perfectly.

What does it feel like when you see people enjoying your music?

I love to think that I had a little part in positively shifting someone’s mood through a tune, or introducing them to music they hadn’t heard before. That’s the main reason I play, to see people having an awesome time.

What was the most meaningful compliment you’ve received from an individual in the crowd?

Well I’ve never played at a club but one of my good friends said he couldn’t wait for me to be playing live to say that he taught me how to DJ.

How have your friends influenced your music taste?

Well, my friends have actually had a huge impact on my taste in music. As I’ve mentioned before I never used to listen to any particular genre, although I do remember liking house music, especially Calvin Harris, during high school. It wasn’t until I was in my final year of uni that a friend of mine moved in with me and introduced me to techno and electronic music; So I started listening to more mainstream techno and house music, such as Camelphat and ‘Losing It’ by Fisher. At afters I used to love disco tunes! Once I had graduated, I became more intrigued with techno music when some friends took me to see ‘I Hate Models’, playing at tunnels. Since then, that’s definitely my favourite style to mix and listen to.
