Le sablier cassé

Je t’ai laissée partir il y a 1000 ans
Avais-je tort ou raison ? Maintenant,
Je sens que le temps me fait des reproches
Sans aucune pitié.

Ma déraison avait-elle raison ?
Pourras-tu un jour me le pardonner ?
Car mon cœur me traite de tous les noms
Qu’il sort, tout chauds, de sa broche…

Mais, 1000 ans, c’est seulement hier
Et plus j’y pense, moins j’en suis fier.
Je voudrais retrouver le sablier
Pour l’arrêter, le casser !

Si j’arrivais à retourner le temps
Je n’y toucherais plus pendant 1000 ans
Mon cœur ne battra que pour te revoir
Il ne vivra que d’espoir

Si je ne te revois pas
Le monde ne sera
Qu’un désert inhabité
Qu’un sablier cassé…

The broken hourglass

I let you go a thousand years ago
Was I right or wrong? Now,
I feel that time is reproaching me
Without any mercy.

Was my folly right?
Can you ever forgive me?
For my heart calls me all kinds of names
That it takes out, all hot, from its spit...

But, 1000 years, it is only yesterday
And the more I think about it, the less proud I am.
I would like to find the hourglass
To stop it, to break it!

If I could turn back time
I wouldn't touch it again for a thousand years
My heart will only beat to see you again
It will only live on hope

If I don't see you again
The world will be
An uninhabited desert
Only a broken hourglass...

PROGRAM NOTE
Overtures often come before operas or other large works. In this case, Slightly Comic Overture is a stand-alone piece—in the spirit of an overture—but more a free agent and not attached to anything else. It is my first orchestral work, and was inspired by the music of Leonard Bernstein and animated film composers such as Carl Stalling, and to a lesser extent, music by Aaron Copland, Béla Bartók, and Alfred Schnittke. Since I composed it when I was fairly young, I decided to revise it, with the hope that anything that I updated would only enhance or clarify everything and not change the nature of what I originally composed, or cause it to lose its youthful spirit. In this sense, Slightly Comic Overture is really a sort of hybrid: an intermingling of youthful exuberance with maturity, and a few colorful, more serious moments with others that are more humorous and playful. Slightly Comic Overture is dedicated to Peter Bay and the Mostly Modern Festival.

Slightly Comic Overture (for Orchestra)

Oh, the sea surges up to the steps,
people turn away from the squall.
Wild the wind carries on through the cracks, in the window pane, or the walls.
And the distant smells of the spring,
seem so far away, February.
On the edges, the growth just begins, barely peeking out, staying small.

Oh, the purple that drips down the garden wall, doesn't feel the rain, or the cold.
Though the cracks in the concrete are widening, it's just containing, ever more.
Like the distant faces without, never welcoming, don't begin.
Always outside and not looking in, never reckoning, not at all.

Mr Jones wont you settle down.
If you wanted to get better you'd of wrote yourself the letter. 
It must contain everything, 
That you've ever thought or felt from the start of this thing. 
Of course, you're just finding this out. 
You really should of known and had this all figured out by now.
You see, you just can't be helped, 
won't even take advice as we dish it out.

Mr Jones we're trying to help you out.
If you'd just ignore our mistakes and stop pointing them out. 
You'd see that you're really caught in our trap.
Cause we can't offer you help until you've sorted it out yourself.
This is the cheapest way,
for us to think weve made the slightest difference today.
Whilst doing practically nothing.
To be honest we wouldn't know where to begin.

Oh, the caption reserved for the photograph, doesn't try to tell, truth at all.
Like the face and the clothes that belong to me, all I'll ever be, for yourself.
Like a trinket that once held a memory, a forgotten thing, a miss step. 
Or a plant that emerges a week early, in the frosty breeze, fading health.

Headed home after a wonderful trip to Florence in Italy. This piece reflects my current mood. I met a lot of new people and I took a lot of photos. This music is a spontaneous improvisation. Recorded at my personal recording studio at home. Please enjoy.

Chris Drabble, based in the Northwest of England, is a rock guitarist who has over 50 years of playing experience.
With nearly 50K streams on SoundCloud in the last 12 months being a mixture of Guitar Rock and softer Ambient instrumental tracks, Chris is now ramping up his rock guitar work with his latest album ‘Foot to the Floor’, which harks back to his youth when rock guitar tracks had a catchy opening riff, and was the sort exciting music you felt you had to tap your foot to. 
His influences include Rush, Led Zeppelin, The Police, Simple Minds, Pink Floyd, Joe Satriani and Jimi Hendrix. He is currently listening to Porcupine Tree, Dream Theatre.
