A Cajun two-step dance tune I'm dedicating to Al Berard, an all-around great Cajun musician who passed on a couple of years ago. I took a week of guitar lessons from Al at Balfa Camp in 2006, near Ville Platte, LA when I was playing in a semi-Cajun band, the Fresneaux Ramblers. Al also wanted to make an album of Cajun music with the mandolin so this is my nod to that unfinished project. On mandolin, guitar, acoustic bass, harmonica, banjo, brushes and the traditional percussion instrument, the triangle. A mudbug is Cajun slang for crawfish.

'"Hope" is the thing with feathers is one of the best known of Emily Dickinson's poems. An extended metaphor, it likens the concept of hope to a feathered bird that is permanently perched in the soul of every human. There it sings, never stopping in its quest to inspire.

Emily Dickinson wrote this poem in 1862, a prolific year for her poetry, one of nearly 1,800 poems she penned during her lifetime. Only seven of these were published while she was still alive. Her sister, Lavinia, collected and helped publish all of her poems after Emily's death in 1886.

Her poetry was highly original but was dismissed or simply misunderstood when she sent her work out for appraisal or publication. It was only after she had passed away and her poems circulated more widely that critics began to appreciate her genius.

With Soundcloud, music is so often created across the oceans, with musicians from around the world who have never met or spoken directly other than through this platform joining together.  Our new jazz fusion composition Across The Oceans pays tribute to these connections across oceans which have fostered such high quality of music, the sharing of regional influences, and true friendships.   
Joining me again are players from Germany, England, Spain and the US, who contribute their individual sounds, elevate and shape the music.  Our horn section was provided by two versatile instrumentalists - Georg Boehme on Baritone saxophone and Andy McLean on Tenor and Soprano saxes and EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument).  Love the full sound they get together and also the interplay between the two musicians.  Our featured guitarist is Stephan Lipinski, who weaves his fine solo to connect the oceans between Europe and North America.  Spanish percussionist Sergio Parraga provides the underlying churning rhythm complement to further bridge our two continents.

Martin has composed and played the instrumental on layered guitar tracks and shruti, and I've re-arranged the lyrics and vocal melody. This gem can be found in Buntings Ancient Music of Ireland, and the "literal  translation from the original Irish" was undertaken by a Miss Mary Balfour, (there is a slightly different  translation in my 1897 book The Minstrelsy of Ireland). 
The original Irish song was believed to have been collected by an agent of Bunting's associates the McCrackens - a man called Patrick Lynch...who collected over 200 songs from singers around the Mayo area in the early 1800's but this man was never acknowledged in the publication. 
The original tune was believed to have been first published as "Ye Trugh" by Neal in 1724, but Bunting got it from Charles Byrne at a harpist's gathering around the 1790's.

"Arise from thy slumbers, oh fairest of maids!
With me wilt thou wander to Truigha's green shades,
Where sorrel and bright rowan berries abound,
And nuts in rich clusters the branches have crowned.

A bed of fresh ivy to rest thee I'll bring,
The blackbirds and thrushes around us shall sing,
And there with unceasing attachment I'll prove,
How soothing the cares of affection and love.

In my contemporary arrangement I've made the English lyrics flow a bit better.

My father's hometown is an area with a lot of snow, and I spent some time there in the winter when I was a child.
It was then that I first experienced the feeling of silence when it snowed.

That sense of silence as I walked through the falling snow may have been the catalyst for my current work in ambient music.

This music is dedicated to those snowy, beloved winter nights.

Murmet [part 1]

“Leaving together, Leaving apart” is one of 6 pieces I recorded using my 8th mosesa
In November 2018. I have since made several other models,, but recently rediscovered this album in my files.

It anticipates many things that I am doing currently, namely playing and responding to overtones and instrument body resonances. Tuning is by ear as well as all playing. I tuned the instrument to resonate with my wishes when playing.

The mosesa 8 is composed to 2 guitar strings, a cello bridge resting on a thin, patched and pressed wooden bowl. I used a DPA microphone, external guitar pedals and internal Logic Pro filters to create the sound that you hear.

The emotional background for these pieces, “Leaving together, Leaving apart” was the coming and goings between myself and one of my children of college age. I felt so much joy at being together, then sorrow with leaving.
The music is not illustrative, and I think focuses mostly on the joy of relating each moment with another.

Saturday night ramblin in the ever scruffy lounge room.
Just inspired to try a bit of banjo from looking at a fellow SCer's music project on a Mountain in another continent, and listening to some wonderful Appalachian songs.  I'm a very average banjo player as you can hear....but I love the old time music.

When https://soundcloud.com/dneye asked me for a track to play his fantastic guitars on, I brainstormed this 5/4 piece with odd chord set in order to make it difficult to him and thus get the best from his skills. After programming it, I added some organic solos (yep I played keys) to make it seem more friendly ;))))

And he... succeeded in the challenge, overcoming all my expectations !!!

POEM OF EMILY BRONTË 

This shall be thy lullaby,
Rocking on the stormy sea;
Though it roar in thunder wild,
Sleep, stilly sleep, thou bright-haired child.

When our shuddering boat was crossing
Eldern's lake so rudely tossing,
Then 'twas first my nursling smiled;
Sleep, softly sleep, my fair-browed child.

Waves above thy cradle break,
Foamy tears are on thy cheek,
Yet the ocean's self grows mild
When it bears my slumbering child.

( The photo is taken in Grasmere.  A village  in Cumbria, England, in the centre of the Lake District. In my imagination it`s EMILY BRONTË`s  "Eldern's lake" from the poem :)

Chris, hailing  from North West  Tasmania in Australia, is a singer-songwriter who pens originals, and  plays vintage music the way it used to be.  Her mashup of  Folk, Blues,  &  Americana  draws on a lifetime of  encounters with places, people, and the magic of nature;  echoing  a multitude of  global grassroots traditions. 
Traveling around carrying her “band” like a pack pony ~ lap-slide, banjo, uke, as well as a few plain ole guitars, she  regularly performs in Australia and Europe.
Growing up in Merseyside, England, Chris was exposed to the vibrant music scene of the late 60’s and 70’s,  and her music is has been influenced by  traditional folk, country blues, and  world music .
In 2016 she represented her State at the International Blues Challenge & National Women in Blues Showcase in Memphis,  and her second album,  “Wailin’ & Raggin’ the Blues” was  a   finalist for “Best Self-produced CD with the Blues Foundation , USA.  Her third album, “Twisted Roots & Twisted Highways” was  a finalist for Blues & Roots Radio Album of the Year in 2018.
