The Yazoo comparison is very much a valid one!  It's nice stuff, not entirely sure it's my bag though.  The Chris & Cosey remix is my favourite of the bunch, might give this a spin on my radio show on Wednesday if I get time to squeeze it in.

The Opiates is the latest project from the "queen of electronic soul" Billie Ray Martin, together with Norwegian musician Robert Solheim.

The long awaited taster of remixes and first single from the forthcoming album ‘Hollywood Under the Knife’. For The Opiates, these remixes by such greats as Hercules and Love Affair’s Kim Ann Foxman, as well as all-time heroes Chris and Cosey of Throbbing Gristle, are a dream come true. The results are magnetic. The XHK Mix with its hard Dubstep flavour completes the picture and gives the song a completely new voice and vibe.

With the single ‘Rainy Days and Saturdays’, The Opiates live up to their ‘Carpenters of Electro’ title and hope to conquer airwaves and underground alike. It’s a song about the transvestite Candy Darling who, although leading the wild life and preparing for a sex change, dreams of married life and a house in the suburbs.

The album ‘Hollywood Under the Knife’ will be released on Disco Activisto Records both digitally and as a CD on 17 October, featuring nine unreleased images by Turner Prize winning artist Wolfgang Tillmans, who opened his entire archive, granting The Opiates free choice of images.

Phil is a experimental recording artist, who also works as a photographer, documenting the contemporary, experimental electronic music scene and life around it. His music is based on sampling from odd sound sources, random data streams and the usage of microphones and various synthesizer. Phil ennobles the trivial, honors the silence and creates an experimental collection of raw textural ambiance. It could’ve been a matter of trompe-l’oeil, a mere juxtaposition of audio signs to mimic functionality, but there’s a much more vibrant and fluid quality to his mind-expanding pieces. He is living in Hamburg, Germany.

The LepLoop
I've used a lot of synths over the years but this one is something different…&nbsp;&nbsp;it's a strange instrument. It's small, much smaller than it appears in photos: it is part synth, part drum machine, part multi-track sequencer. I'm still&nbsp;figuring it all out but initial impressions are that it's very unpredictable and slightly unstable… but in a good way. I had a few issues with it sometimes refusing to work and also it has a tendency to pick up stray&nbsp;signals from my iPhone and iPad if they are anywhere near it. But&nbsp;when it works&nbsp;it is quite rewarding to use and is capable of some amazing sounds - if mildly frustrating trying get it to do what I think it 'should' be able to do - but I will persevere. If you like wonderful experimental noises - accompanied by a simple rhythm (although I'm sure it's very capable of a lot more) then this little unit could be for you.
The LepLoop will definitely become part of my CCCL&nbsp;experimental&nbsp;arsenal and will most likely get seconded into the upcoming Throbbing Gristle experimental sets in October/November 2010.
The short sound example here was performed without a keyboard, just using the internal sequencer and some real-time tweakery. The outputs were processed with a couple of Eventide pedals for some 'tape delay' &amp; reverb.

Apparently my LepLoop is a prototype, which accounts some of the 'issues' I had with it - the production version should run fine.
