Purple Velvet is Chris James and Lee Dearn, two purveyors of deep and sensuous house music since forming in late 2011. Having gotten to know each other at various late night music sessions, the pair have increasingly honed their own house sound that’s as suited to the dark confines of a club as it is the sunnier vibes of an outdoor terrace. Examples to date can be found on the ever on-point Berlin label, Exploited, in the form of their Flashways EP. Both tracks pair fresh and radiant synth work with loose beats and plenty of colourful details, and have garnered support from the likes of Huxley, Til Von Sein and Apollonia’s Dyed Soundorom for their dance floor dynamics. The pair have also contributed tracks to compilations on Exploited and Dirt Crew, and releases on Noir, Dirt Crew and Local Talk. With their follow-up 'Solstice' (including a remix by Bristol disco pets Behling & Simpson) on Exploited,  Purple Velvet are well on their way to emerging as the breakthrough stars of 2013.

2013 saw Silicone Soul celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their Darkroom Dubs imprint. Launched in Glasgow back in 2003, the DRD stamp has become a mark of quality and seen many established names exploring deeper realms whilst also unearthing fresh and exciting global talent. 

From Fabric to Watergate, The Standard Rooftop to Club Bahrein Buenos Aires, the Scottish duo have celebrated their disco-decade with a string of '10 Year' parties spread across the last 12 months, building on Darkroom Dubs already strong global reach. 

To round off their birthday in style Craig and Graeme have asked some of the label's main acts and strongest supporters to contribute a track for a new compilation. Artists including jozif, Ryan Crosson, Uner, Gary Beck, Of Norway and Simon Garcia all feature in the collection that Silicone Soul present as a snapshot of the future sound and musical vision of Darkroom Dubs. 

Due for release Feb 24th 2014 on double 12" vinyl and download.

B1 Silicone Soul - Spanish Castle (Clip) [Darkroom Dubs 10]

After numerous releases for labels like Pong Musiq and Cuatro Records, Spanish DJ/producer Javier Orduña makes his AMAM debut, the Se Hace Camino EP. Javier is not a solitary nerd but rather someone who thrives on collaboration (also check out his recent EP together with Xordo of Sci+Tec Digital Audio) and this case is no different. It kicks off with AMAM labelmate Dakpa’s remix of “De Nuevo Otra Vez”—Why start the EP with a remix? Well, the title translates loosely as “once more all over again”, so it fits the concept! If you enjoyed Dakpa’s First Division EP released late last year, you’ll easily get sucked into the subtle, climbing pads while the crisp, jacking percussion forges ahead. Then, Javier teams up with Pablo Bolivar, known for his work on Curle and Desolat, for “The Goat Stripe to the Mountain”. This one is a more low-key, twinkling number with traces of electro splendor. 

“Mi Pollo” (Spanish for “my chicken”) highlights Orduña’s Latin roots, offering some kind of twisted synthetic flamenco tech-house. Then the original version of “De Nuevo Otra Vez” is unveiled, a chugging track that features a catchy, twee piano melody to tickle the ear drums just as much as the lower-end frequencies tickle your rear end. Finally, the source of the EP’s title, “Se Hace Camino al Andar”, offers a tasty mélange of acid, minimal and Kraftwerkian sounds, showing how Javier Orduña can project his influences into the future for a sort of sonic poetry.

Next up we welcome Chris James from Coat of Arms with a selection of tracks born from his recent experiences in life and music.

For the title track ‘Song for Her’ Chris teams up with vocalist Ria Moran to deliver a piece of music that’s both raw and beautiful. The groovy sub sound which has given Chris his recent identity accompanies a melancholy synth hook and Ria’s soothing vocals to bring a fresh take on this kind of lament.

After a lot of thought we decided that perhaps the dance floor wasn’t the best point of focus for our remix, so instead we’ve taken Ria’s vocals and Chris’ hook and added some Rhodes of our own with a bass line inspired by a DJ Shadow gig we were at recently. It’s a bit different, perhaps more for the poolside than the club, but as they say variety is the spice of life…

‘And I Fought’ and ‘Break Ups No Make Ups’ showcase the Chris James you’re familiar with, 808 bass and jacking beats. While retaining the moody vibe of the EP both tracks have raw, phat bass and pushing beats to work the dance floor.
