The Eclectic Collective – composition

 This song began with JJ, as many of our songs do, who composed the outline on the keys, drums, and bass. He then let everyone else in on it immediately. Ken was first up to bat by laying his always cunning drums in there. After he had a beat to work with, Josh used his tree trunk of a five-string fretless bass to complete the rhythm section. Soon after, Tez and Stephen both laid their magical guitars in there. Once we had it all in the can, Stephen used his powers of production to give us a great mix.
  This one came together relatively quickly, which is a good sign that we're all enthusiastic about what we're creating. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

method: first, I created a shaman-monk-version (mostly ‚Gregorian‘ voice and jaw harp) on cassette tape (this is where some of the noise - especially in the first section - derives from) and zoom r20 with a vacuum-tube pre-amp for the voice ….. all of which I then treated like a field recording sample in Samplitude - sculpting it with vst instruments and effects. 
narration: it feels like I have sonified this poem a million times before …. which might be the case because I have lived through it that often - I and others I dearly care for …. but then again … I might have actually done so. it is also part of the cycle SONIC CASCADE published in  A SINGLE LOOP OF FORTUNES. Alternative titles are ‚TWO-PLACE‘ and ‚04s SAMPLE‘. For this publication, I simplify the title to  ‚SAMPLE‘.

It was wonderful to weave my flute playing around Milana's intricate piano playing and in synch with Michael's guitar themes. The mix was a challenge, balancing two lead instruments,  while keeping the basis of the guitars present at all times. It required patience and close attention to detail.
How did this collaboration come about?
Michael sent me a SoundCloud private message mid last year, asking if I would play flute on "Solemnidad". The track was just guitar then. There were delays due to my prior commitments and, by the time I added flute, Milana's pianos were already there.  
Michael's guitar composition set the scene and Milana's intricate piano playing was an inspiration for me to work around in the beginning. In the mid section, I set off on my own but came back to the guitar themes in the end.
For me the project turned out to be well worth the wait.
