In Dust We Trust is an ode to a collection of friends who share a certain understanding, who live by a love and respect for the people around them. That friend who saves that last puff for you, that friend who will share their drink with you when you can't afford your own, that friend who will learn how to drive a car on the spot because you're too drunk to make it home.

Kicking things off with a release from Chaos In The CBD, ‘Accidental Meetings’ is a record that celebrates this way of living. The four cuts effortlessly move you through a journey of delicate textures and atmospheres. It begins with the late night basement sounds of the title track, then sends you through the spacious and meditative ‘North Pole Cafe.’ The wild rhythms of ‘United Identities’ hypnotise you, until you find yourself spat out by the energetic grooves of ‘Distorted Fields.’

Play it in the club, play it in the hotbox, or play it for your mum, this record is filled with soulful, rhythmically complex, melancholic music that is unmistakably dusty.

The Alishan Forest Railway is a 86 km network of narrow-gauge railways running through the forests of Alishan Mountain in Chiayi County, Taiwan. During the Spring months, the iconic red train passes through an endless array of cherry blossoms and small, untouched villages. This peaceful scene is set in contrast to the stories told by locals, of wandering spirits seen deep in the forest. The spirits are believed to be the lost souls of the 32 passengers, who perished in the tragic derailment of the train in 1981.

Burn a candle in remembrance when you play this record at the club.

Philip Budny’s caught our attention over and over again these past years, appearing on numerous VA’s, a beautiful debut EP on Lionoil and last year’s collaborative EP with Seb Wildblood on Coastal Haze. We couldn’t be happier to premiere the first track from his next release, kicking off 2019 with an EP on Jacques Renault’s revered Let’s Play House imprint, who’ve recently been home to releases from Viers, St. David, Keito Sano and others. On his Somnambulism EP, Phil P once again cooks up four warm, sun-dappled tunes to make the winter months a little more bearable and add a touch of summer spirit to your day. 

Our premiere today is the title-track, Somnambulism.  Somnambulism layers the vaguest strums of a distant guitar, nebulous pads and silky smooth keys, on a backbone of 909 hihats and a bouncing bass line.  Like a feathery dream built on a steel foundation, Somnambulism carries qualities of hazy home listening and club energy alike. Aptly named - literally meaning sleepwalking - Somnambulism, both the track and EP alike, seem to walk the line between two worlds:  the hazy and the energetic, the ambient and the 909, the dream-world and the real one. Through his vision of these worlds intertwined, Philip Budny shows us how to dream as we dance, the way others sleep as they walk.

Initially this compilation was dreamt up to raise awareness about rising temperatures and the effect climate change is having on our planet. However, with the tragic events taking place in Australia it was obvious we needed to redirect the vision of the project to help those affected. We decided to donate all proceeds to a campaign set up by a Yorta Yorta man and community rights advocate, Neil Morris (Drmngnow). The money raised will cover critical costs —such as temporary relocation, basic amenities, property repairs and ongoing support where necessary.

We're no strangers to Philip Budny here at Bolting Bits, keeping a close watch - since his first forays into the world of blissed out house music on Church's Volumes compilation, to his recent outing on Let’s Play House - it’s been a joy watching his music develop and bloom. It’s an even greater pleasure to premiere Belfast, the A2 off of his debut album “Shades of Blue”. Coming out on Philip’s own ‘Aronia Records’ imprint, the 7-tracker is Philip’s most expansive and cohesive work to date. Belfast, built on a bed of chilled out rolling drums and embellished with all sorts of hazy ambient synthetics, is a beautiful tune perfect for any comedown, or increasingly frequent bout of the quarantine blues. Closed-eyed, foot tapping and gentle hip swaying house music at its best, pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Philip Budny.However, the more ambient leaning pieces of the album see Budny delivering some of his most exciting work yet. A personal highlight is the title track, ‘Shades of Blue’, featuring beautifully emotive harmony - played through gliding synths reminiscent of his breakout tune ‘Eclipses’ -and super groovy sparse percussion, which are some of the more left-field and exciting rhythmic arrangements he’s offered up so far in his discography. Likewise, Moritzplatz, 2013, with drifting new-age piano riffs, rainsticks, detuned deteriorating strings, ambient field recordings little a tiny touch of percussion, is a beautifully crafted moment on the album. Such cuts see Budny tread newer ground both melodically and rhythmically, and the payoff is truly rewarding.All in all a serene, soothing journey from start to end, a perfect companion for quarantine daydreaming, ’Shades of Blue’ is a must-listen.
