Chris interviews Ali King, the founder and chief executive of Turtle Key Arts on the marketing and press decisions behind TESS at Sadler's Wells, London in 2023.

The show, which was premiered in 2023 and created by Ockham's Razor is an adaption of Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It weaves together acrobatics, aerial, physical theatre, spoken word and an inventive, evocative set to conjure Hardy’s world.

The classic novel still has extraordinary relevance for contemporary audiences as it explores questions of privilege, class, poverty, agency, female desire and solidarity.

Here, King talks about the decisions behind marketing a show, creating assets, finding the right team for the show and some of the ideas left on the cutting room floor.
