Prince Igor Overture by Borodin played by the Symphony Orchestra of Kharkiv Conservatory (Харківська консерваторія; Kharkivska konservatoriia). The only orchestra with which I have worked which used to take me to watch the local football team, Metalist Kharkiv. This season they were top of the league until football stopped.

Thanapol Setabrahmana directed the Mahidol Wind Symphony (from Salaya, Thailand) in the world premiere of 'Fanfare For The Armed Man' on February 2, 2015. This work was composed for the Mahidol Wind Symphony. It is based on 'L'homme armé: Variations' commissioned in 2003 by Timothy Reynish.

John Carmichael commissioned this work to be premiered October 1, 2015 by the University of South Florida Wind Ensemble under his direction. This performance is from 2017 in Austin Texas, the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, directed by Jerry Junkin.

The original version of 'Méndez' for large brass ensemble was commissioned by Summit Brass and David Hickman, and premiered by Summit Brass under Joseph Parisi in July 2015.

In the middle years of the 20th century, legendary Mexican trumpet virtuoso Rafael Méndez (1906-1981)presented hundreds of trumpet trio concerts with his two sons, Robert and Rafael Jr.

'Méndez' seeks to evoke the atmosphere of those performances and the spirit of the times. It uses as its inspiration five motifs taken from one of the lightest of the Méndez trios, 'The Brave Matador'. To these are added the kind of flourishes that feature in many Méndez compositions and that for many listeners characterise the folk music of Mexico.

This material is embedded in a 12 note theme(Ab Bb Db Gb D Eb E F G C B A) that, in addition to providing significant melodic material, lends the overture a cohesive structure.

As winner of Montclair State University's 7th Annual Concerto Competition I had the unique honor of performing my very own Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band with the MSU Wind Symphony.


About the Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band:
Premiered April 21st, 2016 by Dr. Gail Robertson and the Little Rock Wind Symphony - Israel Getzov, Conductor

This Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band was composed for one of my former teachers and fellow euphonist Dr. Gail Robertson. For this work I based the material around pitches corresponding to each letter of her first name: G = G natural; A = A natural; I = Ionian, or the current key’s tonic, C natural; L = Lydian, or the fourth degree of the current key, F natural. Each movement is derived in some way from this figure.

The work begins with an energetic fanfare and a taste of the second theme. The euphonium enters with similar pomp and dazzling virtuosity that settles into more heroic statements. Next, the euphonium soars over thick ensemble textures in a tender reflection. Finally, the soloist charges forth in a ferocious display of dexterity and power.

Concentric Lanes I.Two Paths

The word ‘threnody' derives from Ancient Greek, meaning ‘song of mourning’. Humankind has always recognised the power of music to offer reflection, hope and healing in the darkest of times.

'Threnody' uses a 12 tone theme in a triadic-tonal context. The theme is heard in its entirety as the opening melody. In the second section, its retrograde (and retrograde-inverted) versions form a canon, starting in the cello. After the return of the main melody, a livelier section sees those retrograde themes as an accompanying figure in the pizzicato cellos. The music concludes with the theme in the solo violin. It is left incomplete, ending on the 6th tone.

This recording is a MIDI simulation. The live premiere was on September 25th in Aurora CO, by the Denver Symphony Orchestra directed by Lawrence Golan. Those three very warmly received performances were followed by another on October 10th by the Lamont Chamber Orchestra, again directed by Maestro Golan to whom 'Threnody' is dedicated.

I took your full name RUTH BADER GINSBURG and aligned the letters with the 26 letters of the alphabet. I then aligned the alphabet with the 12 notes of the chromatic scale using the chromatic scale 2X to fill the difference. I took the 17 letters of your name and then aligned those with the 17 equivalent notes.
These 17 notes would serve as the building blocks for the entire composition.
The resulting theme of the piece is based on the notes:
