Chust Sublime was a long-standing radio show which aired every fortnight on Glasgow's Subcity Radio (@subcityradio) from 2015-2019.

One of the big beasts of online radio in Scotland, Subcity recently celebrated its twenty-seventh birthday. Sending out its signal from Glasgow’s West End, Subcity’s programming incorporates everything from global free jazz to Eastern European electronics and was the perfect home for Chust Sublime.

These streams were hand-assembled by Nigel Ross (accompanied by his old friend and comrade Shuggie Watson aka “the engineer”), an unimaginably complicated, time-consuming task by a crate-digger and record collector with a deep knowledge of his subject. 

This was a portal to teeming underground scenes, avant garde experimentation, forensic DJ knowledge, the outer reaches of sound art, and vital networks nurturing new artists and live music.

Nigel had a true, deep, and inspired connection and passion for music and expression, and really ultimately for connecting with and moving people, with music and friendship (and storytelling) as his tools. He shared this openly and continually with all of his friends and family and through his 90-plus radio shows as the voice behind Chust Sublime.

Folklore Tapes is an open-ended research project exploring the vernacular arcana of Great Britain and beyond; traversing the myths, mysteries, magic and strange phenomena of the old counties via abstracted musical reinterpretation and experimental visuals. The driving principle of the project is to bring the nation’s folk record to life, to rekindle interest in the treasure trove of traditional culture by finding new forms for its expression.
