Currently celebrating one hundred releases with a set of EPs from label bosses Drumsound and Bassline Smith themselves, Technique Recordings has established itself as one of the finest labels in the drum and bass scene over the past decade. Scene legends like Roni Size, J Magik & Wickaman, Friction, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Crissy Criss, Tantrum Desire, ShockOne and
Youngman have all graced this imprint, and you’ll consistently find the Technique name at the top of genre charts and smashing clubs worldwide. It’s no surprise that this label has assembled a sufficiently heavyweight back catalogue to fill a forty-three track LP with remastered classics and exclusive VIP selections.
Time for a Retrospective.
This album takes you in every direction, covering all wavelengths of the drum and bass spectrum. Drumsound and Bassline Smith, along with their alter-ego 2DB, provide an extensive selection of the tracklisting, backed up by their label’s current international soldiers and a selection of those heavy-hitters who’ve graced the imprint over the years.
So, in the midst of the bombardment from the label bosses, Tantrum Desire pop up with their big-room killers, Crissy Criss & Youngman drop in to grime things up a touch, and Dub Foundation flip things into half-step style. And, to show this is a truly worldwide movement, there are contributions from Ukraine’s MaxNRG, Slovakia’s L Plus, and a couple of combos hailing from down under, Skyver & D Jon and Spectrem & Spillage.
All this and choice cuts from Roni Size, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Digital, J Majik & Wickaman, plus an appearance from TeeBee on remix duties. No wonder the Technique brand continues to raise its status.
Over the years, and their hundred releases, Drumsound and Bassline Smith’s Technique Recordings have proven themselves to be a monumental institution in the drum and bass scene. Every one of these tracks has graced raves and airwaves worldwide, and while this Retrospective is looking back at the classics, it also promises big things for the next Technique century.

Summer finally seems to be in full force here in the UK which we’re very happy about and we’re also very pleased to formally announce a new resident has joined our collective, Lurch. 

From an early age Lurch has been a devoted music  fan and multi-instrumentalist. He started djing and producing in 2006 after he became enamoured with the deeper side of dubstep. While in an Oxford based punk band until 2012, he produced on and off until later on in the year when he started to take things more seriously. 

He quickly snapped up opportunities to release on LDNB Music, DNBB Music and Soul Deep Recordings, also gaining support from Different Drumz and Ledge Sounds. Releases on other exciting labels like Intrigue Music are already lined up for the future. 

Things continue to look up for this budding producer, possessed by musical liquid funk that will surely continue to resonate through his future releases and beyond. Keep a close eye on Lurch’s pages to keep up to date with all of his forthcoming releases, news and events.

Flash up your lighters, it’s time to show your appreciation! On 26th August, Crissy Criss’s last 1Xtra outing hits the airwaves. And, as the show reaches its apex, the stroke of midnight signals Create the Future has been released to online retailers, so while Crissy is on air, you can salute his work by copping it immediately.

The last decade has seen bass music, its roots firmly
established in the underground, push shoots and branches up through the streets to mainstream accept- ance, not only in the UK, but throughout the world. And undisputedly one of the most influential forces in this era of the low-end has been Crissy Criss.

There are few people who can claim to have been part of the D&B scene since childhood. He can though. Step-son to the legendary jungle pioneer Kenny Ken, he was learning to mix at age 9, playing on Kool FM at 11, taking his first steps into production at 12, and chalking up his first release at 17. Since then, as part of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s roster, he’s championed all flavours of D&B and given crucial exposure to many new artists.

But now it’s time to turn the page. Crissy Criss is leaving 1Xtra, so to celebrate his achievements, it’s only right he drops something victorious on Technique Recordings.
As the title Create the Future suggests, this track is about development. An almost deep house intro, rolling filtered piano chords around delicate stabs, is subsumed by a synthetic alarm-call and atmospherically- manipulated vocal samples as the beats and bass kick in. The sounds open and expands until a breakdown with tinges of soulful garage, before building back to an emotive climax.

This is music with emotion, euphoria and pedigree, and a highly-suitable marker for the end of Crissy Criss’s 1Xtra journey.

With every end comes the possibility of new beginnings, though. And as Create the Future lands, you know that Crissy will be busy living up to that title. So watch out, Crissy Criss has been released into the wild, so be prepared for what’s coming next.

Relay & Front drop their new single on the Rub A Duck imprint, featuring the two titles “Farewell Letter” and “Farseer”.

Relay & Front, two producers from Finland and Estonia, teamed up in summer 2011 when they were both 19 years of age. Initially meeting regularly online, they eventually started working together after Front successfully enticed Relay into the world of drum ‘n’ bass. Their style, often described as liquid drum ‘n’ bass, has a lot in common with material from known acts like Makoto, Camo & Crooked and Netsky. The first title of this new single package, “Farewell Letter”, recently appeared on the soon to be released Snow Dance 001 compilation and has everything in it that marks their own sound, with live guitar and piano. The arrangement is elaborate and showcases an exciting combination of driving basslines, slightly mysterious piano programming and a merciless hammering breakbeat. Once the break sets in, the guys fade to a superb guitar lick that could have been played by The Cure; a given that adds that extra bit of atmosphere to the entire song. Perfect for the underground live sets.

The second title, “Farseer”, focuses a bit more on the harder side of Relay & Front’s sound. Once again our Baltic friends took their time to write an attractive arrangement for their synth programming, combined with swirly vocal samples. The chopped up drum fills make for a nice, rough edge to the end result, all the while staying close to the all over mystical feel of the entire production. It is clear that Relay & Front know how to deliver well prepared and ever so musical backing tracks with real instruments for today’s drum ‘n’ bass dance floors. Taylor made material for all DJs and soon to be found in a live set near you!
