Jeremy Olander - When We Dip 103

The Lab NYC is Mixmag and WAV's weekly live stream and post-work unwind, powered by Void Acoustics, where we showcase the finest DJs direct from our Brooklyn office. This Thursday, August 23, Rotterdam-based artist Eelke Kleijn showcases his grand, melodic and deeply emotive sound.

Since emerging during the early 2000s, Eelke Kleijn has continued to make a lasting mark on dance music by showcasing captivating and progressive material. He's released two albums, numerous originals and a wide array of remixes on esteemed record labels such as Eskimo, Toolroom, Suara, Ultra, EMI and Spinnin', as well as his very own label, DAYS like NIGHTS. Plus his third album is set to arrive in November.

He has been named a BBC Radio 1 ‘Next Hype’ act for his track ‘Stand Up’ and is regularly tapped to produce music for Hollywood film trailers, including for Parker, Wrath Of The Titans, This Means War and not least Ron Howard’s Rush. When he's outside the studio he's touring the global club circuit, making regular stops in the UK, Argentina, Australia, the Netherlands and more. This year he'll make his debut at Burning Man, playing Playaskool, Kashba Lounge at Playground and a big art project that has yet to be announced. Having Eelke Kleijn grace the intimate setting of The Lab NYC is certainly a special moment.

This past July, Henry Saiz (@henry-saiz) and Edu Imbernon (@imbernonmusic) performed in The Kings Hall at Avant Gardner and we recorded their incredible b2b set. In this edition of Live @ Cityfox, we hear a blend of uniquely mixed, sustainable house grooves woven about cinematic hues—grand, evocative of differing moods, which sound harmoniously synergistic, against Imbernon’s energetic, worldly harmonies and ethereal vibes.

Since 2006, Madrid-based Henry Saiz continues to release and design music that aims to connect and to explain both art and life. Saiz’ work as a sound designer structurally informs his DJ and production work, while his untamed imagination fuels his creative flare throughout all of his work. It is this approach that makes his sound some of the most diverse and genre-bending in house music today. He founded the Natura Sonoris label in 2009, which was recognized and lauded as the best of the year by DJ Mag Spain. However one imprint wasn't enough: 2017 saw the advent of his Lost Worlds Records, on which he debuted ‘Calor’, a record from his alter-ego, Hal Incandenza. His first album as Hal Incandenza is a foray into dancey synth-pop that exhibits Saiz' versatility. The following year, Saiz evolved yet again to release Human under the alias Henry Saiz & Band, taking the synth-pop sounds of Calor and adding more intense, cinematic hues, with a strong spotlight on vocals and lyrics not heard in any of his prior EPs.

Edu Imbernon burst on to the scene in 2009 with an infectious worldly house music track co-produced by Coyu entitled “El baile alemán” (Liebe Detail, 2009), and seizing the attention of the community winning “Best Underground Track of the Year” by Beatport. He cemented his presence a year later, releasing a remix of The XX's ‘Crystalised,’ using the momentum to then start the label, party, and brand Fayer in 2012. It reflects Imbernon's music, bridging the gap between indie and electronica melodies with house and techno structure and beats. Over the past decade, his signature sound is encapsulated by the imprint: favored by partygoers from his hometown of Valencia, to the world. He's curated and remixed music from the likes of Adriatique, Maya Jane Coles, WhoMadeWho, Jonas Rathsman, and Patrice Baumel.

Since they’re both mainstays at clubs and festivals the world over, from Glastonbury to Creamfields, Sonar and Ultra, it's an absolute delight to have hosted these two for an especially uplifting travel soundscape journey on this Foxcast.

“Ever since Cicatrix, whose real name is Ilan Y. Kupers (The Netherlands, 1982) was a kid, he has always been in love with music which isn’t quite so extraordinary given the fact that his Mum was a secretary for Phonogram Records and his Dad produces an internal radio show for several hospitals in the area of Amsterdam. Whether it was taping the latest tunes on the radio or TV or making his own little radio show for an imaginary crowd, Ilan has always had music running through his veins.
Back in 2008, he finally managed to buy his own set of decks to practise mixing and started performing on local stations and at the infamous yet intimate Quest4Trance parties, as well as spinning alongside the likes of Misja Helsloot, Dazzle, RAM, Ron van den Beuken and Marc Simz. Furthermore, Cicatrix has done guestmixes on D.U.T.C.H. Radio (http://www.dutch-radio.nl ) and Radiovolum.no for world famous DJ's such as Andy Duguid and Lemon & Einar K.

Nowadays, it's anything but trance that defines Ilan's mixing; a fine blend of deephouse, tech house and techno is what's it's all about. This has brought him to play amongst Remy, Secret Cinema & Sandrien!
