Monaberry welcome a genuine OG to their family: Madrid magician Luis Junior. With over 20 years of releases on some of the most respected labels across electronica, he returns with his biggest release in several years. Four originals, one killer remix from Super Flu, get to know:

‘Energy Success’ is an immense construction. An intense narrative with full suspense and release through its bewildering staccato synth riff, this drives and drives until you don’t think it can twist any further… Only to find it does.

‘Ways’ takes us even deeper into Luis’s cosmic universe as a beautiful humanoid texture provides the lead while big washes sweep in the background. Gently rising with layers of positivity and musicality, there’s bewildering magic laced deep into the soul of the track… Something that label boss Super Flu complement in a completely flipped way with the remix. Taking the chords and building them around tightly plucked instrumentation, there’s a pensive sense of drama running throughout.

Elsewhere ‘Reality’ is every bit the jolt its name suggests. Strident, pulsating with a theatrical edge, this lives in its own lane. A true 1am level-raiser, this is the quintessential ‘no-turning-back’ track when the late night massive slip into top gear.

Finally ‘This Is Now’ closes the EP with a stark, stripped back march that rasps with alien dub delays and a time-bending sense of technoid trippiness. This is now, this is the past, this is the future… Places where Luis has dominated since his first releases 25 years ago. Rest assured we’ll be seeing him again soon, too.

Monaberry #48 – Luis Junior – Reality

Spring Summer Fall Winter is a quarterly compilation compiled by Davide Squillace to be released on his label This And That Lab. Each edition is split into two parts with this being part B of the fourth edition.

Featuring a selection of styles percussive grooves and uplifting melodies this release includes tracks by Basti Grub, Affani, Federico Fioretti, DJ Simi and Last Vision. Combining tracks from a broad cross section of artists, each edition focuses on textures both audible and visual.

Opening part B of the edition is Basti Grub, who along with many previous releases on This And That has releases on some of electronic music most prestigious labels such as Hot Creations, Mobilee Records, Stil Vor Talent and Get Physical. Quirky vocals and vibrant percussion are a staple of Basti Grub’s style, and this seductive track titled “You Want Me” is true to his trademark sound.

Second is a collaborative track from DJ Simi and Last Vision who despite their many solo productions are joining forces for the first time with their track “Lithic Phase”. Deep and atmospheric, the tracks stripped back groove mixes trademark elements from their solo contributions to labels such as Great Stuff, Paul's Boutique, Stereo Productions and Snatch! Records.

Providing the third track is veteran producer Affani who has a timeless sound previously featured on labels including Nervous and Bush. Slow, building bass swells as the popping percussion cuts through the gliding pads that combine to give the tracks timeless sound perfect for all occasions.

Closing the release with a deep and spiritual track is Federico Fioretti who has also released on Glasgow Underground. Rich percussive textures and epic melodies blended with ceremonial chanting form the foundation of this uplifting composition that arguably saves the best till last.

Watergate’s new resident and agency signing Braunbeck steps up for his label debut.

Braunbeck’s punchy grooves and tender melodies have been sound-tracking Watergate since 2017 when the Stuttgart native made an unassuming Wednesday night debut at the O*RS label event in  March that year. Since then, the artist has built fans and cred in equal measures, playing regularly for WG, playing Circoloco in Ibiza and launching the fledgling Sol Eterno imprint. 

His maiden outing for Watergate’s home label epitomises his natural talent. ‘Samsa’ pairs him with Berlin-based, Australian DJ and producer Eluize, who supplies a searching vox over twirling layers of melody and sparse percussion. Jonathan Kaspar follows with a stunning adaption of ‘Samsa’ made for misty-eyed rave mornings. ‘De Trum’ is an effective dancefloor tool, built around a metallic drum-line. The EP rounds out with ‘Blocklife’, which distills all of Braunbeck’s sonic building blocks into one stirring finale.

A core member of the Oberbaumbrücke family delivers a sleek label debut.

As the club’s technician, Joris Biesmans (aka Biesmans) has been an invaluable fixture at Watergate for the last five years. A true audiophile, when he’s not tuning WG’s soundsystem to perfection, he’s building modular synths and honing his studio craft.

Having recently quit his technician job to focus on making music full time, he’s a new addition to the WG agency roster and follows suits with an impressive debut EP on the label, after releases on Correspondent, AEON and Adana Twins’ TAU. The title track ‘Electric Love’ is a chugging slice of electro, marked by lush key progressions and an attitude-drenched vox from newcomer Idorski. Marvin & Guy Amplifier are tapped for remix duties and inject the original with a celestial melody line primed for end-of- night moments. ‘Technician on a Mission’ is driven by a polished bassline that modulates throughout, while 80s synths give it a retro-future stamp. ‘City Boy’ is a modern day synthwave gem, reinforcing the breadth of sound espoused by Watergate Records.
