The story of Tiatto begins in a Brixton garret opposite a crackhouse in 2001, with the chance meeting of Ben Wah and Max Devere, who quickly whipped up a couple of albums of material. After leaving their laptop on the tube one night, the project went into hiatus until the Reason files suddenly appeared on a warez board several years later.  

Relocating to Melbourne they were joined by Nick Fakeman, the notorious twin-handed keyboard demon of Clifton Hill, and Canadian renegade entrepreneur Ganz Enfarben.  Producer extraordinaire Simon Grounds stepped in to help turn the chaos into a record. 

Theme From Tiatto is the first taster. Teutonic slabs of analogue synthesizer, random breakbeats, funky distorted clavinet stabs, ambient drones and earsplitting guitar noises from special guest Penny Ikinger – what more could a music fan want?

Bo from Winduptoys asked me to play some synth on their track so I took my Juno-106 over to his place and played it through an SE-50 effect unit set to maximum distortion.

Heard enough sensitive glitch-pop yawns cooked up by yet another kid with a laptop and a bunch of soft-synths?Then return to an age when technology was real technology, knobs were real knobs and plug-ins were really plugged in! 

Combine one-third chill-out textures more spacious than the 5th dimension, one-third dub grooves deeper than a black hole, one-third walls-of-sound more solid than solidified platinum and one third bleep-rock signals beamed into space as evidence of human intelligence.The result is Double Exposure, the debut album from Melbourne’s leading exponents of experimental dub electronica, winduptoys, out now from Clan Analogue.

winduptoys formed in the early years of the 21st century, the meeting of two great musicians, studio producers and live sound engineers, Robert Boehm and Jeremy Smith.Contributions to the earlier Clan Analogue release Defocus and the new dub compilation Clan Analogue In Version, along with their Switch On EP, have already been heard by ears tuned to currents moving in the ether. Double Exposure also features collaborations with like-minded musical iconoclasts Psyburbia and Koshowko.Their common passion for gadgets, devices, toys and accidental technologies has enabled winduptoys to emerge from their studio with the great new hope of Australian electronic music.

winduptoys have built their album with quality old-fashioned electronic music values, hard to find lately but occasionally seen in the work of peers like Add N to X, Meat Beat Manifesto and DJ Food.Peak through the studio window during the legendary Double Exposure sessions and you would have observed electricity, diodes, filters, oscillators, feedback loops, reverse phasing, tape machines, voltage, modified grooveboxes and more, all working towards the glorious cause of sound itself.

Winduptoys - GhostDub

Jacek Tuschewski’s work is a creative venture exploring harmonics, hypnotic soundscapes, meditation, sound healing, sonic visualization, and storytelling. He delves into frequencies, higher truths, and the multi-dimensionality of the human experience. It is a journey of self-discovery.

Ode to the Bliss of Frequency Modulation is the last track completed by Melbourne sound artist and composer Jacek Tuschewski before he sadly passed away in 2024. Clan Analogue are honoured to release this track on the new compilation Sublime Wavelengths: The Cosmic Bliss of FM Synthesis. The version of "Ode to the Bliss of Frequency Modulation" on the compilation is a slightly edited shorter rendition so we have here made available the full-length version for people to appreciate in its original epic form.

Jacek left us with some technical details on how he created this expansive and transcendant work:  

"So yes this track is "pure FM" no other synthesis has been used for all the instruments. As the title suggests it is an ode to the sheer bliss of what can be done with frequency modulation extra so today.

The instrument used:
Osmose which uses the EaganMatrix the best and most sophisticated FM synths engine in 2024. The EaganMatrix was the trigger of the mpe avalanche that is disrupting real time synthesis and performance as we know it... I only just got it so it was a very late addition... but it is there!     
    
FM-Lab by Yamaha and Steinberg, possibly the most updated version of original and new DX algorithms, which started the whole FM revolution.

f. 'em (best synth name ever!) by Wolfram Franke of Waldorf fame. Wolfram really pushed the traditional DX/FM structure. It is a 13 oscillator synth that allows to freely create DX style algorithms in a matrix for 8 operator FM. It also eats CPU like there is no tomorrow. 
    
modwave by Korg, it has advanced Wave Sequencing (wavestates) and altered FM architecture. It is one of the few creative wavetable synthesis that allow sophisticated realtime modulation of wavetables.            
   
For this track; basically all the parts/instruments are played "live" and minimally edited/tweaked before mixing."

Sublime Wavelengths: The Cosmic Bliss of FM Synthesis takes listeners on a journey through the shimmering tones, intricate modulations, and futuristic landscapes of FM synthesis. The compilation is a celebration of the iconic synthesis method of frequency modulation which revolutionised sound design in the 1980s and defined an era of electronic music. The artists on Sublime Wavelengths explore FM synthesis in all its manifestations. The album is dedicated to the memory of Jacek Tuschewski who passed away prior to the release of the compilation.

James Heighway has used a Micromoog and customised modded gear to create this blast of analogue noise. This is the full version of the first track on Clan Analogue's compilation album 'Analogue Redux: Hardware Explorations'. 

Legendary Australian electronic music and arts collective Clan Analogue return to their roots with the new compilation album release Analogue Redux: Hardware Explorations, celebrating the voltage-driven intensity of analogue electronic music hardware.

Clan Analogue’s infatuation with analogue hardware goes back to the Australian electronic music collective’s inception in the early 90s when multitudes of obsolete analogue synths and drum machines were being discarded by the mainstream music industry only to be eagerly snapped up from pawn shops by a generation of young underground artists keen to explore the new sounds of techno. In recent years a new generation of musicians has been inspired to move away from purely computer-based systems and to re-embrace the joys of getting hands-on with analogue hardware.

Celebrating the new wave of hardware-driven electronic music, Clan Analogue put out a call for artists to contribute tracks featuring their favourite analogue gear and classic technology. From around the country came a selection of tracks ranging stylistically from experimental soundscapes to classic techno, acid house to ambient. Whether dusting off their old analogue synths from the back shed, messing around with the latest budget-priced gadgets or tweaking their modular setups, the artists on Analogue Redux responded to the call-out with their best and squelchiest efforts.

The tracks on Analogue Redux span the full frequency range of electronic music styles in the modern era, with industrial techno from Black Lung, nu-IDM from Miles Cosmo, downtempo garage from Tiatto, krautrock improv from Michael Mildren, lo-fi ambience from Random Acts of Elevator Music and everything in-between or beyond.

Analogue Redux: Hardware Explorations is ninety minutes of analogue intensity and voltage-driven sound, available on all leading online platforms and on CD from Clan Analogue’s website. The album will be launched in Melbourne at Clan Analogue’s Electronic Weekend at 303 on Saturday the 24th of September from 6pm as part of the Melbourne Fringe.

After Kill Climate Deniers comes The Bolted Report
“Ah, Canberra. Plenty of bong for your buck. Drug-addled politicians. Drugged kids reading ‘Kill Climate Deniers’. This is lower than the original town of Acton, sunk beneath the lake this last century.”

When Andrew Bolt got wind of some lucrative arts funding going towards a possibly subversive theatre show called Kill Climate Deniers, telling the story of an explosive attack on Parliament House by a group of eco-terrorists, he wasted no time in unleashing his blog readership to vent their vitriol. Reuben Ingall and David Finnigan took the assorted ensuing rantings and incorporated them into the single 'Bolted' from their concept album Kill Climate Deniers, released in September by Clan Analogue.

Following on from the album’s release Clan Analogue are pleased to follow up with Ingall and Finnigan’s new EP The Bolted Report. Along with the original version of ‘Bolted’ (in both extended album version and radio edit form) comes four remixes of ‘Bolted’ exploring the philosophy of Bolt and his followers through the prism of a range of electronic and dance music styles, from classic late-80s techno to modern bounce.

When EMF mainman James Atkin heard that Kill Climate Deniers was soundtracked by classic dancefloor bangers from the late-80s and early-90s he jumped on board with full house piano riffs blazing to provide his ‘Unbelievable’ remix. 
Wade Clarke, the genius behind Aeriae, provides a hyperkinetic IDM mix under his new side project alias Profound Actor. 
Electronica despot Future Conduits cracks open Bolt's skull with his FUKD & BOMBD mix, sliding 90's drug hysteria into KCD's modern climate concerns. 

Reuben Ingall gets bouncy as Dead Joke DJ with his tangential revisit. 

Finally Iubar Project stretch and mangle the blustering verbiage of Bolt and his acolytes in a sonic attempt to explore their innermost thought processes.

What happens when homegrown Australian terrorism meets the classic beats of early house and techno? When the unstoppable force of climate change meets the immovable object of Australian politics?
Newly released by Australia's pre-eminent electronic music collective Clan Analogue is a unique (and bizarre) collaboration between musician/producer Reuben Ingall and playwright David Finnigan.
Kill Climate Deniers is a 35-minute barrage of dancefloor bangers in the style of classic House and Techno from 1988-92 - mixed with samples from Finnigan's original stage-play of the same name. It tells the story of an explosive attack on Parliament House by a group of eco-terrorists (during a Fleetwood Mac concert, no less) and the Environment Minister's one-woman war to take back her country.
The result is an anthemic club album threaded through with blistering political satire and a guns-blazing action adventure set at the heart of Australian democracy.

David Finnigan is an Australian writer and theatre artist. Working with research scientists in the UK, Australia and Sweden, he creates work exploring climate and systems science. David is a Churchill Fellow and an Australia Council Early Career Fellow.
Reuben Ingall makes hi-tech lo-fi music with an array of home-made software patches, algorithmically mangling his guitar, voice and other sources to create lush soundscapes and lonely drone. His other projects include the radio program Subsequence, mixing and mastering bands, and a mashup-DJ act. He has worked on music for installations, theatre, e-publications, film and dance.

The perilous-eponymous journey of Aeriae's new release Peril Triage opens with ‘Firmament’, a vortex in which a steadfast beat and subsonic organ riffs eventually collide with a searing synth sky.

Aeriae continues to carve out his unique space in modern electronic music production with Peril Triage, the new 7-track EP out now on Clan Analogue. A hyperkinetic evocation of threat, paranoia and psychological response, Peril Triage emerged following Aeriae’s touring to support his enigmatic 2014 album release Victris. 

Honing the Aeriae controllerism setup through live performance enabled heightened levels of instinct and drama during the atypically rapid (for Aeriae) composition and production process for Peril Triage. Previous Aeriae releases were heedless of whether they could be reproduced live in any practical sense. With Peril Triage, Aeriae takes a set produced especially for live performance back into the studio environment to synthesise the two approaches. The result is a gapless forty-three minute set of labyrinthine synth programming and rising tempo. Beneath the pace and skittering beat design, compositional structures morph slowly via the producer’s trademark serialist melodic figures and intricate sound design, always with an ear towards the ultimate emotional destination.

It's the same mix I play into a big room, thus sounds awesome in a big room, and has been described as 'mind-melting' and '(G-RATED STAND-IN FOR AN EXPLETIVE) amazing' by early adopters.

Just got word that, after a few delays, the Severed Heads tribute album is coming out through Clan Analogue in Australia - a cause for celebration, really!

This is one of the remixes I did (the one they're using, albeit unmastered), and if you don't know Severed Heads, they're basically the pioneers of Australian electronic music, along with Whirlywirld and SPK. Obviously I'm chuffed! ;)

Brilliant stuff to see them get more kudos.

Severed Heads - A Million Angels (Little Nobody remix - Clan Analogue)

This is the first track ever produced under the name Philosophy Of Sound. Recorded in 2009 with final mix touches added a couple years later. 

With a different mastering this track has been also featured on 'HEADSPACE: A TRIBUTE TO SEVERED HEADS' compilation album, marking the twentieth anniversary of Clan Analogue and uniquely celebrating the heritage of this Australian electronic music and arts collective.
