Aquarian - The Snake That Eats Itself

Canadian born, Berlin based producer @Aquarian makes his full length album debut The Snake That Eats Itself on Bedouin Records. This record follows his collaborative EPs with Deapmash as 'AQXDM" and is his first solo release since his 2016 experimental mixtape for Quiet Time.

Nearly five years in the making,The Snake That Eats Itself is Aquarian's most complex, diverse and emotive work to date, plunging his trademark UK sound-system / techno hybrids into a self-contained, cinematic universe streaked with heavy influences from industrial, IDM, drone and dark pop music. Written in Brooklyn, New York, in a deeply transitional, yet seemingly endless period preceding his relocation to Berlin,the title of the album refers to the Ouroboros, a mythological serpent symbolizing the cycle of birth and death and infinity itself.

The Snake That Eats Itself pits Aquarian's most abrasive and brutal moments next to his most wistful and introspective. Viscerally thick layers of tape saturation envelop the album as sludgy synths ooze against brittle atmospheres; breakbeats fragment, explode and disintegrate into swarms of delay and noise; scorched, metallic percussion - sampled from a year-long demolition and construction project next to his apartment - forge the rhythmic backbone of the album. These elements, however, seamlessly make way to startlingly crystalline and shimmering ambient passages, offering a sense of reprieve and balance.

Aquarian | Hate Is a Strong Word, Pt. 1

Commissioned by Radio Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid, in Sept. 2019, "Tiempo, Piedra, Insecto" (“Time, Stone, Insect”) is a piece for metal objects, small ceramics, stones, and vibrating strings. Taking as its point of departure a selection of simple materials and rudimentary gestures, the piece explores repetition, addition and subtraction as principles of circularity and perpetual motion.

The title of this work comes from three words jotted down in a notepad after walking through a vast park in a big city and speculating with a friend about the animate and the inanimate. Are stones trully still, or is it that we humans just can’t see them move? —This seemingly simple, even naive question, carries a deeper reflection on the relationship between time and movement. While Tiempo, Piedra, Insecto does not directly seek to address this question, its structure was shaped by these ideas.

“ But the sleep of a hibernate object would instead be a state of perfect sleep, in which an entity would be real but simply without relation.”

Aiôn is a Hellenistic deity associated with time, ex. season, breath, sleep (dream) etc, even Deleuze describes Cinematic time as aiôn which stretches out to become an intangible past and future, or Chronos (Chr), the ever-present that expresses only the here and now. In Geology, aiôn uses for eternity time which could also refer to four aiôns that make up the earth’s history. Aiôn is defined in Astronomy as Trillion years. Thus, we could say hibernatemode is in aiôn where an entity breaks relation with outside.

Su Yu Hsin composes essay film through philosophical and scientific approach to overlap and juxtaposition image with events, ex. Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. Australian scientists’ microscopic investigation of antarctic moss reveals atmospheric record of Earth in its layer of cells. She uses found footage, data and facts to visualize relational geographic analysis. Hibernatemode comprised of 2- channel video and six channel sound installation. She collaborates with Sound artist Aloïs Yang to constructed nature in exhibition space.
