Pluvia (Meditation on the sonification of Brazilian precipitation and temperature data from 1901 to 2020)


Pluvia was created from the analysis of data on precipitation and average annual temperature in Brazil from the period 1901 to 2020 using data available on the Climate Change Knowledge Portal processed with MusicAlgorythm. The work proposes a meditation guided by the variability of average rainfall over 120 years, which brings a reflection on an experience through time. The data was used for the sonification of two melodic sequences. The main one, with high variability that represents the volume of rain. The second sequence, obtained from the temperature, was processed with effects, creating a sound that sometimes refers to alarms, sometimes refers to a car racing from severe to more acute regions, representing the increase in temperature during the monitored period. . Also, the artist/scientist used sounds from his personal bank. Conceptual map 1: the path of rainwater Rain in its plurality of meanings can represent fecundity and fertility, in its natural aspect. more mystical and ancestral, as well as, in all its power, it can represent calamity. And in this variability of meanings and propositions, the graphic analysis under a poetic bias indicated the path that the composition should follow. It was defined that for this data set, the concept of sonification would be manifested in an objective way, which is to communicate numerical behavior through sound in the clearest possible way. To do this, the data was fitted to a range of 88 notes so that the graphically displayed variability could be felt through the sound. Feel the sound, both in the perception of the pitch of the notes and in the sensation that the high and low notes give due to different durations and intensities, added to the timbre of a virtual synthesizer. So this melodic line would be the erratic guide for a time travel feeling the various slightly scary technological changes. Concept Map 2: The Warming Path It was defined that for this temperature dataset, sonification would manifest itself in more artistic ways. The data was adjusted for a range of 88 notes, forming a melody that, as can be seen graphically in the temperature graph, would have an ascending profile, that is, the melody would go from the low to the high regions. However, we chose timbres and a chain-based effects track with different delays out of a reflection on consequence, impact on time and posterity. The duration of the notes was adjusted through a Fibonacci sequence so that the higher notes had a longer duration creating sustained sounds so that the warmer temperatures felt more present.
