Inspired by the poem "The Peace of Wild Things" by the American poet Wendall Berry.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

here comes the last of the three works on ‘retrospective future’.

background: as alarming as the scenarios are that scientists predict for the year 2100 if there is no rapid change in the way we treat our environment, this future still feels like abstract sci-fi, just beyond our imagination – more than twice as far away as the year 2001 was when kubrick's ‘a space odyssey’ came out.

but then, we watch our granddaughter, who just turned three, riding her scooter, screaming with joy. we realize how incredibly quickly time has passed since we were her age. and we have to think that in 2100, she will be only slightly older than we are today. and suddenly, 2100 becomes just one heartbeat away, an infinitely sad one.

I wrote 'scooting aleece' which originally dealt with a wild friend of us 40 years ago and we loved singing it at our all-night parties for two, albeit with different lyrics. recently, I rewrote the lyrics as a dedication to our granddaughter for the reasons mentioned above. to her and to all other kids her age.

while working on the AI vocals for the original 4/4 arrangement, for some reason I kept hearing a 3/4 beat in my head, which completely turned the entire compositional concept on its head. so, after creating the first version, which was faithful to the original, I created a second one that was completely different. and because it also featured a vocal premiere, I’d like to share this second version first. the first one will come later, if anyone is interested.

Seven years ago, Oddrun and I released a beautiful collaboration titled “Smile” — a heartfelt reinterpretation of the timeless theme from Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936) 🎬.  Born from a melody that once underscored silent emotions on screen, our version gave it a new voice — tender, human, and full of light.  For some reason, it never made its way to my SoundCloud page… until now. It feels like the right moment to share this piece again — a little fragment of beauty we both cherished.
 I hope it touches you as it once touched us. ✨

I recorded the piano myself. Some elements like certain string parts, ambient sounds, and subtle adjustments were programmed using MIDI — although some of the string sounds were also played and recorded using an electric piano.
This track features vocals by Koharu Rikka (小春六花), a singing voice synthesizer.
