Ad Solem - Variation on a theme by John Murphy
"Ad Solem" (toward the sun) is my orchestral variation on John Murphy's Adagio in D minor, composed for Danny Boyle's science-fiction film "Sunshine."
I took the opening measures with that hypnotic arpeggio and used it as an ostinato throughout almost the entire piece, gradually transforming it to create a dramatic and epic build-up. The idea was to capture that urgency, that tension accumulating relentlessly - like a race against time toward the sun.
With full orchestration (woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, piano, synthesizer, and electric bass), I wanted to preserve the utterly cinematic soul of this music while developing my own orchestral language.
A build-up that never lets go.
