All of a sudden, like a clap of thunder in a clear sky, house music exploded in Amsterdam. It was September 1988, the end of the summer that the British had already dubbed "The Summer Of Love," and the birth of a new era in the capital.

Shrouded in steam and smoke, lit by furious, flashing strobes, Eddy de Clercq stands behind the turntables at the RoXY. Beaded with sweat, in deep concentration and completely at one with the music, he builds a compelling, hypnotising soundtrack of electronic beats and basslines. Uplifting house tracks alternate with beautiful, vocal garage and abstract, futuristic Detroit techno. Waves of energy shudder through the crowd, who whoop and cheer with each subsequent track. Football whistles blare, a siren begins to wail. Can you feeeel it? The temperature reaches boiling point as the dance floor explodes in yet another ecstatic climax. But then the DJ makes a radical change in tack. The musical rollercoaster hurtles on into the depths of the night, driven forward by an intense, biting acid track that makes the floor shake. Strange and estranging and going so deep that we seem for a moment to step into an intoxicating dreamworld where time no longer exists.

In the late summer of 1988, over the course of only a few weeks, the RoXY, a stylish, former cinema on the Singel in Amsterdam, grew into a veritable house temple: the dazzling centre of the capital's young house scene and a club whose fame in the years that followed would take on almost mythical proportions. Not only because of the music, but also due to the extravagant clientele, who knew how to create an amazing party atmosphere.

The RA Exchange wraps up 2024 with an episode dedicated solely to vinyl culture, from dubplate production to record store culture, all-vinyl DJing and running labels that release records.

In the first part of this episode, which was recorded live at Wire Festival, panelists and vinyl DJs Mary Yuzovskaya, Clarisa Kimskii and Devoye Folkes discuss the benefits and drawbacks of playing records in the digital era with RA editor Gabriel Szatan.

According to the panelists, playing vinyl could be seen as a skill analogous to driving stick shift: while it's not always necessary, it gives new artists a better understanding of a DJ set's underlying machinery. They also talk about how a DJ's identity used to be intertwined with their personal collection of records, and how the digital paradigm shift presents today's DJs with infinite choices.

The Exchange's second half takes listeners behind the scenes, investigating the challenges and opportunities inherent in running a business based on vinyl sales. Live from Wall to Wall Festival at RSO, HHV Records, Bandcamp Berlin, Objects Manufacturing and Elevate Record Store speak to the overhead investment, production time and ecological considerations they take into account in their day-to-day operations.

They also shed light on the statistics behind the enormous sales of vinyl records in the past few years and the breakdown of which artists are making money from digital versus physical music sales and why.

In loving memory to RAVE CLUB Cologne 1988-89 ( https://psychothrillcologne.tumblr.com/raveclubcologne ) ... the relevant story here so far: Hip-House, also known a bit clumsy as Rap-House or House-Rap, is a musical genre that mixes basically elements of House Music and HipHop. The style rose to prominence during the late 1980s in Chicago and New York. The "New Style" originated in Chicago and quickly became popular across the U.S. east coast, in the UK and also in Germany (so for example in 1988/89 in Cologne's legendary RAVE CLUB > https://soundcloud.com/claus-bachor/sets/rave-club-cologne-1988-89-the ). For a closer delimitation the two expressions of black American culture, came from quite different places. House's relationship with Disco and HiNRG, closely identified with gay culture and hedonism, seemed superficially concidered in stark discord with Hip-Hop’s emphasis on gritty funk, hetero machismo, and ghetto reportage. But at the end of the 1980s when both genres were riding high and House was hotter than ever, the scenes finally mingled. Rappers wanted some House hype on their albums, and dance producers employed MCs to add some flavour to their tracks. The result was Hip-House, a strong blend of Chicago/NYC style, strictly rhythm beats, funky breaks and party-hyping lyrics that worked remarkably well ...

I am a confessed Psycho Thrill Cologne supporter. Friend and lifelong fan of Claus Bachor and Roland Casper. In addition, my complete respect goes to Klaus Stockhausen (Coconut K / Front HH), without whom the two of them would never have been so captivated by electronic music. Without these three, Techno, Acid, and House in the German Rhine Area would never have become what it has firmly anchored in the club scene there to this day. Psycho Thrill Cologne 4evr. PSYCHO THRILL Cologne-founder CLAUS BACHOR is one of the German long-term House and Techno DJs at all, and as friends in Detroit say "he's been doing this as long as anybody else that we know! His sets can range from classic Disco & old school House classics all the way to the darkest, bangin' techno that you've ever heard!" However, he's not standing still yet: The Psycho Thrill club and vinyl label run by him has just turned 25 and Bachor is still doing bookings all over Europe, the United States and beyond. 

His long-term affiliations with Detroit techno music and also his journalistic involvement with the topic of Detroit Techno/ Electro/ Chicago-House as an author/editor over the years has made him a world renowned expert. This experience and vast knowledge of the techno genre has led him to appearing in many documentaries, the most noteable being 'High Tech Soul' [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddh88l_57Bk ] which focused on the creation of Detroit techno music. Other film credits include being involved in the highly acclaimed 'We Call it Techno' [ https://www.discogs.com/Various-We-Call-It-Techno/release/1388974   //   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWPFrWojYQ4 ] documentary which focused on Germany's early techno scene and club culture. 

Without using the usual hype for trends, he has managed to gain a position as multi-communicator in the German Techno and House scene, in which he is always convincing as a DJ.
