An edited account of a walk through North Sheffield made by Matthew Clegg and Brian Lewis on 26 March 2013, shortly after a heavy snowfall. Clegg reads and introduces several poems from 'Fugue' (the first of West North East's three sections): 'This Place is Part of Me', 'Fishing by the Trunk Road', 'The Convalescent' and 'The Vantage'. Silophone Hello

Matthew Clegg reads the poems 'Out Far and In Deep' and 'The Power-line' (from his collection 'West North East'). Recorded in Bempton and Flamborough, East Yorkshire, on the evening of Friday 19 July and the morning of Saturday 20 July. Recorded and mixed by Brian Lewis for Longbarrow Press.

The project: "An exercise in when a sound ends."

A long-fading sound, the same notes played, each time held until you’re certain you can no longer hear it. Then repeat (with feeling). Record a live performance.

I spent an hour or two on sound design. What I came up with was a bit convoluted... but worked: Yamaha CS2x Wurlitzer > Catlalinbread Callisto > Line6 POD (set on a basic delay) > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run > Lexicon MPX 100. 

My goal was to create a sound where bits and pieces of other notes and overtones stuck out at different times, one that would "drift off" the decay to highlight the silences in between, and a sound that was dynamically sensitive to the performance. A couple of key elements to achieving this was bringing in the natural(ish) resonance of the Lexicon chamber reverb, and lengthening the decay on the Wurli sound so that holding the chord a tiny bit longer bloomed the lower register.

Listening to each chord fall into silence was a good exercise in mindfulness. I had to tamp down my instinct to find a tempo a time or two.

There are a couple of faults in the recording - an over or two crackled in the Lexicon, and I tripped over a note towards the end - but, hey: live recording!

Introduction

Soundmarks is an art/archaeology collaboration between Rose Ferraby and Rob St. John using sound and visual art to explore and animate the sub-surface landscape of Aldborough Roman Town in North Yorkshire, UK.

This podcast, recorded in September 2019, features a conversation between Rose and Rob outlining their processes of research and making over six months in Soundmarks, resulting in an exhibition, sound installation, book, art trail and film.
