Hoshina Anniversary - Gekokujo [CLIPP201]

Following two striking EPs and a full length album through Lovefingers' excellent ESP Institute label, techno innovator Hoshina Anniversary arrives on clipp.art with the intensely adventurous “Gekokujo”. A brief debrief of the Tokyo-based DJ & producer shows him turning out fascinating music for over a decade, journeying through abstract techno, experimental deep house and drone-core. Sonic voyages that always explore the boundaries of the Japanese musical scale, with more than a few bangers as a result.

Gekokujo the term itself roughly translates to "the low overcomes the high" and the three movements of the release itself create a swirling cauldron of contrasts. Gekokujo and Gekokujo II find Hoshina Anniversary at home with his self-styled 'watechno' sound - infusing electronic fundamentals with jazz sensibilities and subtle Japanese aesthetics. Dueling tracks laden with audio contrast, meandering crunchy stabs, wilding out LFO’s, clashing percussive time signatures, rising arpeggiated motifs and dystopian breakdowns, all stepped against clanging 4/4 high hats. Kaguya Hime (either influenced by the titular character from Studio Ghibli film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya or 10th century Japanese folklore monogatari The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) pits wigged out circular synth sonics against a bubbling acid-y bassline before giving way to straight up Herbie Hancock expressionism. As we start to close the chapter on another year of ups and downs inside the simulacrum, we face the challenges of discerning our own groove from the melee, wondering which patterns will repeat in 2022. The low overcomes the high, only to be replaced by the low.. the cycle continues.

Following his sultry contribution to our six year compilation, SNFSS016 sees Tour-Mauborg provide a blissful journey through the most uplifting corners of house, making stops along the way at Italo, Balearic and cosmic disco. 
 
Whilst the two jubilant opening tracks set the tone for the release, ‘Interdub’ is driven by hollow percussion and sees the record at its most stripped-back. On Dub 003, he teams up with French house connoisseurs, Cosmonection and Marc Bianco, on a warming deep house track, oozing with groove. Finally, to complete the record’s joyous exploration of house styles, hypnotic melodies energise the two closing tracks and capture the transportive allure of the Belgian producer’s music.

For one of such royal heritage he lived a life far from the realms of luxury one might expect him to be accustomed to. The hole in the king's sock grew wider and wider each day as he trudged wearily through the forest, he cared not for gold and palaces but for the sweet essence of nature and the outdoors. Many had criticised his role within such mighty authority whilst others admired his humble reluctance towards the spotlight. For they cared not for the crown, the politics and it's reign but sought sweet freedom from its perilous clutches. 

Flexi Cuts are set to release their second EP in the form of a five track split. They invite a number of new found friends on to the label for the very first time.

Somewhat of a cult favourite, Shall Not Fade was born out of the city of Bristol in winter 2015 and since then has captured the hearts and minds of us all. They’ve came a long way since their debut release from a young Aussie talent, who unknowingly at the time would go on to become one of the biggest names in electronic music, Mall Grab. The rise of the label has been beautiful to watch and thoroughly deserved, consistently releasing record after record of the highest calibre while continuing to attract superstars; Adryiano, DJ Boring, Skream the list goes on... After establishing themselves in the music scene a new project was unveiled to us all, the sub-label of Lost Palms. Like any sub-label it gave them the adaptability to focus on a more specific sound, a smooth euphoric head-in-the-cloud sound that we are now all too familiar with. Subjoi, Harrison BDP and Demuja are a few names embedded onto the leaves of the Lost Palms. The twenty first Lost Palm gently falls into view and is delivered in expert style by Zoo Look. Already being aware of Zoo Look’s back catalogue, it's easy to see how this match up was inevitable to happen – a perfect musical match. Four completely unique tracks compile the Similar Steps EP, with the entitled track our premiere today. Arpeggiated chords slowly glide in from the mist to become submersed amongst a broken beat. The beautiful thing about this track is the constantly evolving sound winding and diving throughout the stages to make a piece of art. KARLITA delivers AMOR FABOLA - the sophomore 5 track extended player on clipp.art by the French artist. Throughout Amor Fabola, Karlita deepens into the sound she developed on her wonderful 2019 debut release Lazydayz, while exploring the more rounder elements of house  music. It’s a sound Karlita warms to and there is a clear affection for the transformative power of house that oozes and permeates from every fibre of the project. From the warbling intro, underwater vocals and distorted perc patterns of “I Can’t Wait” to the linear movement of “Body Language”, rough edges of “a tiger in the heart” and propulsive electro vibe of “Eternity”, Amor Fabola is music created from emotive energy, and pieced together from those elements occupying introspective dancefloor spaces. But at its centre this is a work of love. A love of house and the moments and freedoms that house music affords the listener. While the choir vocal pads of closing track “Unfaithful” echo stylistically the floating mantra of 10CC’s “I’m Not in Love”, the core of this material invites similar intimacy. AMOR FABOLA itself translates from the Latin “love story”, while Fabola also lays roots in “storytelling, tales, drama” and in French “Fabuler” can mean “invent” or “make up” or “fantasize”.  There is crossover in the word “fabricate”. While Amor also takes up in “infatuation, attachment, adoration”. And like anything created there is a process. As the listener we are invited to also make up our own story, as if to say we all have a choice in the things we love and hate. Locate the drama where we will. Piece it together. An artist also known for working through the medium of collage, Karlita thematically stitches together elements from what is known and beyond knowing. About house music. About the individual and their art. About the things we make up. In her own words “This album tends to retrace the process of a romance, good or bad, to each his own interpretation”.

""Origins" is a collection of 6 pillars in exploratory electronic music from 6 different uprising producers and sound artists. A varied, yet cohesive collection of bright, meditative, and pulsating atmospheres.

The opening track, "Hornet", from Florida's Alien House uncovers otherworldly landscapes as they traverse through a haze of deep-space electro. Fluttering synths fill barren craters where shadow figures lurk in and out of light. Rising and rising with a strange, euphoric tension.

The elusive Joe Gigs follows suit with "Time Slip", a slow-rolling house arrangement that stutters underneath a chord phrase built for an endless sunrise. Faint vocals echo out as an introspective flute pattern comes into view. Finally met with a warm, slinky bass-line that tingles the spine.

Continuing on with the house grooves, Portland's Well Being gives us "Soft Mood", which is just that. Shiny, crisp percussive elements ride a groove that peaks and valleys in all the right ways. Gentle acid bass echoes out in radar ping patterns while swells of smooth synth and indistinct vocal chops fill the room.

Starting on the flipside we have a choice cut from Austin, TX stalwart, Corduroi. Deep, lush synths become the lifeblood of "Planet Cool" while a break-ish rhythm catapults us into orbit. Acid bass sequences drip like honey as the synths gain energy and form. Suddenly we find ourselves four on the floor as every element seamlessly lives as one.

Nestled in the middle of side B features "Cloud Mirror" from Akasha System. Hushed out toms and broken snares meet breathy, misty synths before the sub bass guides us into the next realm. Suddenly a hazy bell phrase comes into view followed by mysterious clicks and clacks. And of course, what A.S. song would be complete without a dreamy mallet section?

Couldn't think of a better finale than this epic journey of a track from LA's Pkacarl. "Holding Together" starts us off with an end-of-the-world piano scenario before being joined by what can only be described as an electric guitar oozing through the portals of an entire galaxy of synths and pedals. What really makes this song is the mind-crushing bass-line with an invincible spirit that may keep you dancing infinitely.
