Present-day Paris developed from the Celtic settlement of "Lutetia" on the Île de la Cité in the 3rd century BC. Later, the Romans built a city on the Seine, which initially became the principal residence of the Frankish Empire in the 6th century. Paris experienced a golden age of art and culture in the 16th century under Francis I. During absolutism, particularly under Louis XIV in the 17th century, the city was enriched with numerous Baroque buildings and boulevards, making it an exemplary model of Baroque urban planning. Although the royal residence was relocated to Versailles in 1682, Paris remained the country's political and economic center due to its importance. With the French Revolution in 1789, Paris assumed world-historical significance. Industrialization led to enormous population growth in the 19th century, so that in 1846 the city exceeded the one million mark for the first time.
