London-based duo Village Cuts explore Afro/Latin music through the lens of UK club culture,  in both their productions and lively events across the city.

In their first collaboration with Palenque Records, the duo have shaken up some much-loved modern classics from the celebrated Afro-Colombian group, Son Palenque, with the sound of hand claps, maracas, tambores and chants lending themselves suitably to club interpretations. Village Cuts also enlisted the help of Kenyan collaborator Shama, who recorded new sebene-style guitar to complete the release. 

The EP-opening remix of Damelo Acá is a thunderous peak-time banger driven by the classic Son Palenque call-and-response vocals and rolling percussion, building towards an eruption of soukous joy when the new lead guitar takes centre stage. 

Their version of Zamba is a dynamic and up-tempo flip, with rolling sub-bass and choppy beats. The original guitars direct the rhythm, before joyous melodies and infectious ‘Zamba’ chants command energy from the dancefloor. 

Last but not least is a club-warming rendition of Akalaka, featuring the heartfelt saxophone of Colombia’s legendary Michi Sarmiento, emitting euphoric bliss. The track is driven by its club thump and catchy vocals, plus psychedelic sound design to lift and transcend.

These 3 tracks breathe new life into the revolutionary and entrancing grooves of Son Palenque, for the next generation of party-goers. Primed for summer time sound-systems and sure to make you move!

UK to GH is a collaboration between British music producer Burland and Ghanaian vocalist Zongo Abongo. The EP is a standoff between Zongo’s background in Dancehall, Reggae, and Highlife, and Burland’s influence of UK Bass & Rave music.

The duo were introduced to each other by The Busy Twist at Meet Me There festival in Ghana (2018), and have been working together ever since. This project marks their third collaborative effort.

Burland’s previous work includes three EPs and a single with UK based Ghanaian talent K.O.G. Zongo Abongo has worked with numerous artists from the ‘Global Club’ music scene such as The Busy Twist, Thornato, and Ghetto Kumbé.

‘UK to GH’ is their first release on vinyl.

Telephone No Wire is a melancholic Ghanaian Highlife song that sits on a 2-Step beat. The track features a wide pool of collaborators including Master Drummer Okoe Ashiboi, vocalist Adotey Johnson, and Horns & Keys player John Keneddy Ntumi ‘Long John’ (from Ebo Taylor’s band), in addition to the main artists Burland & Zongo Abongo.

Nyura is an Afro Club / Dancehall tune. It boasts a powerful vocal hook stacked with layers of harmonies and different voicings that glue together to form a rich wall of sound. Combined with heavy low end and hypnotic melodies, this track is a dancefloor winner, but also serves as a catchy bop to simmer down to. It is a song of love & desire sung in Twi (Ashanti) and the Dagbani dialects spoken by the Dagomba people in the northern part of Ghana.

Try To Test with its darker 2-Step beat, leans more towards UK Garage & Grime, whilst catchy vocal hooks meander seamlessly between Pidgin English and the Hausa language. Hints of Acid and Breakbeat sit amongst Djembes, Cowbells, and subtle Kalimba lines to form a balanced fusion between the softly textured African instruments, and the darker elements of UK Bass music. A simple meaning to the song is don’t stand in a far distance and assume what you don’t know. Get closer, see it, feel it, before coming to a conclusion.

Last Chance is a moody downtempo Breakbeat track, sharing similar qualities to Try To Test with hints of Acid & Rave. The track is nicely countered by Dancehall style vocals that bring life to the moody rolling breaks and gently lift the track leading into the drop.

It´s been a bit more than four months since Daniel Haaksman´s "African Fabrics" album has been released and it has become a success story. "African Fabrics" was nominated for a German Music Critic prize, was praised on diverse leading media outlets such as SPIN, NPR, XLR8R, Der Spiegel, NZZ, Songlines Magazine and Goethe Institute Podcast amongst others and has been played by countless club and radio DJs around the world. 

The accompanying single releases "Sabado", "Rename The Streets" and "Akabongi" received remix treatments, now the other tracks of the albums have been reworked and the result is "African Fabrics Remixes", which presents a trans world cast of amazing remixers. 

First off, is South African Mo Laudi with an Afro house rendering of "Akabongi". It´s followed by three remixes featuring the hot new Lisbon sound 2Pekes, a member of the infamous DZC Deejays crew remixed "Sembène" in Euro kuduro fashion, whereas Izem put "Kaggua" ft. Tshila on a broken beat turf. Man of the moment Dotorado, also hailing from Lisbon, is featured with his version of "Rename The Streets". UK´s freestyle bass dons LV revisit "Sabado" with a London carnival mood. Then there´s São Paulo´s hot new beat talent Bad $ista who samba-funked up "Black Coffee" ft. Dama Do Bling. Another Lisbon remix contribution is by legendary Portuguese kuduro don DJ NK remaking "Xinguila" ft. Throes + The Shine in a raved up kuduro smasher. Swedish bass maestro Dance, Kill, Move tamed the original footwork monster "Aho" to a tarraxo influenced half timer. Probably the heaviest remix on "African Fabrics Remixes" is by São Paulo´s ambassador of low end schlepp beats, Cybass, who put "Afrika" ft. Tony Amado ft. Alcinda Gueraneh into madness territories. Durban´s Gqom kingpins Rudeboyz added a weighty groove to the Mbira infused "Raindrops" track, turning it into a club ready track. And finally, New Zealands Afro popster Weird Together remade "Querido" ft. Bulldozer with a UK funky inspired mood. 

And there you have it, "African Fabrics Remixes", featuring eleven diverse and club-friendly remixes that will put "African Fabrics" in further and more varied contexts. Play it out!
