Under the aka Xorpel, this Madrid born 1994 and based in Berlin is always looking for innovation and contrasts in his sets. He has been tirelessly exploring and refining his production skills and DJ sets, earning the support of prominent underground DJs such as Marron, Alarico, Alberto Tolo, Dave Clarke, Insolate, Lobster, and many more.

Michael Ius is a Romanian classical music guitarist who later transitioned into techno,
showcasing his versatility as an artist. He graduated from the George Enescu Music High School, followed by the Music University in Bucharest, where he specialized in classical guitar. Being a live sound engineer for live bands and a pop music producer, Michael was
always drawn to the technical side of music. In 2012, when he discovered techno, it was
an instant connection. 

In 2020, Michael began searching for a distinctive sound he genuinely enjoyed producing, one that resonated with him personally. After three and a half years of experimentation and development, he finally found it. Consistently producing in his refined style, he started receiving support from prominent underground artists and labels, leading to releases on “Maloer Records”, “OUT OF PLACE”, “SYXT”, “Duplicity”, and more, as well as his own “IUS” series on Bandcamp. His music is supported by: Lobster, MARRØN, Amoral, Lindsey Herbert, MKO, Grace Dahl, and more

We are extremely happy to have Michael on our Series. When we discovered his music, we directly felt a special connection with what we want to express and played countless of his tracks during our different events. We also had the chance to meet him and we discovered a lovely human on top of a very talented producer and we are sure we will have much ore collaboration in the future.

For our 16th podcast episode we introduce you to the romanian DJ and producer Michael Ius who blends classical roots with a deep passion for techno.

INTERVIEW
You took classical guitar lessons for 14 years and studied music at university – what was the decisive moment or thought that led you to dedicate yourself entirely to techno production?

All my life I performed other people’s music, whether it was classical or pop. Later I was a guitarist in multiple cover bands. In 2012, I attended a music festival in Bucharest where Luciano was playing. It was melodic techno and it was also the first time I connected with myself on a deeper level. My musical synapses suddenly opened and I instantly fell in love with synthetic sounds. Loved the lowend and the punch! I started producing electronic music in 2016, step by step, and in 2023 I found my current sound and stayed consistent with it.

You're part of the Techno Diatom collective in Bucharest – how would you describe the collective's musical vision and vibe, and what makes your approach different compared to the international scene?

Me, together with Techno Diatom, wanted to bring something different to the local techno scene on a bigger scale. We wanted to actively promote it (via social media ads) to reach more people who like techno and let them know that a “new” subgenre is now present in Bucharest through Techno Diatom. Here in Bucharest and Romania in general, most techno events are focused on Rominimal (which is really good) with slow BPM, Tech House (very commercial), and Hardcore Techno (very fast). Nothing in between.
Compared to the international scene, there’s no real comparison – we’re basically inspired by the international Deep Raw Hypnotic Techno scene, and we’re grateful for that. Western Europe’s electronic music has been going on for generations, and here in Romania we’re just starting to scratch the surface.

In classical music, you work a lot with sheet notes, but these days you probably work more with software and sounds – how has your creative process changed since switching from sheet notes to electronic music production?

Having strong music theory behind me, plus jazz harmony and colorful chords, helped me understand a lot of things faster. I used that knowledge a lot when producing melodic techno in the beginning. But when I went deeper into the real underground minimal techno sound, the theory became useless. Techno has a lot of tension, and if you stay in key, it often sounds too static or melodic. Now the only thing I really use is the octaves. If you “play” the “lead” or “stabs” in the right octave, it works. Everyone can do this by analyzing techno tracks with a frequency analyzer, hovering the mouse on the frequencies when you hear something, and you’ll see in which octave it was played.

As resident of Belfast’s free party collective Annaghtek (meaning ‘techno from the swamp’ when abbreviated in Irish), Illegal Swede has resisted the mainstream gaze of contemporary dance music, choosing instead to bask in the freedom of one of the most defiant things you can do as a DJ – play to people who are truly free in the wake of oppressive establishment and what is perceived to be the norm.

The Swede has taken his stylistic take on techno, hard groove, acid and hard house across Europe, playing throughout the entirety of Ireland, London, Brighton, Birmingham, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic with dates also locked in for Norway and France. Despite playing at shows outside of the free party scene, the Belfast based vinyl enthusiast has chosen specifically to link up with promoters and artists whose views align with his own, such as the infamous DSNT crew of Belfast, London's Stay Up Forever collective and Super Rhythm Trax boss Jerome Hill, all of whom have ties to rave culture in its unchained form.

Within his own productions, The Swede has carved the ethos of the free party community into his furious, acid laced techno compositions, with releases on Rebeltek and Planet Acid Techno & Stay Up Forever.

The politics of dance music grow more and more complex, but, in The Swede, we have a glimpse into the uncensored utopia of a bygone era, whilst keeping one eye firmly on the future.

Kwartz is the stage name of Mario Campos, born in Madrid in 1989.
In late 2011 and after publishing several EPs in different international labels, Kwartz's productions began to draw the attention of the leading names in the international scene. 

It was in 2013 when Exium, the Spanish duo, got in touch with him to publish a split EP called Fenomen which was his first release on vinyl.
In late 2013 Kwartz joined PoleGroup and became part of the booking roster of the label commanded by Oscar Mulero, where he began to release his works regularly. In addition to PoleGroup, his tracks have appeared in several of the most important international labels, such as 47, Mord Records or Warm Up Recordings.

Kwartz is constantly searching for his own sound, so 2016 brings the launch his own label: Order&Devotion, where he will release those of his works which move in dark atmospheres with drones and deep and visceral sounds, all surrounded by rhythms designed for the dance floor.
