Art Style Techno Selection Sorted (12.01.2014)

@Sploofi is a New York based DJ and co-founder of the Sploof Gaarden and Floor It parties, where she is the resident closing DJ. While rarely dipping below 150bpm, her fast paced style turns dance floors into a high energy techno gym. Heavily inspired by various sub genres of hard techno, she hammers between thumping kicks, trance-y baselines, and old school gabber melodies. Her style invites all stompers and ravers to dance at full throttle. In 2021, her party Floor It became a resident at the Brooklyn club Elsewhere. She regularly plays shows at The Lot Radio, Jupiter Disco, and Mood Ring in New York.

We're back with another installment to the Coda Mix series, this time from mysterious Frenchman Mike Stern. All of us at Coda have been listening to Mike's mixes for a long time, some of them getting a serious amount of plays over the years - so we thought he'd be the perfect candidate to do one for us.

Coda Mix 008 - Mike Stern

This is the full-length recording of the SYNC. live performance at Bassiani in Tbilisi on September 16 2022.

In January 2018 Peter Van Hoesen and Atom™ performed a one-off hybrid live show at Unit Tokyo for Mindgames. Performing on stage together for the first time, they jammed for eight hours straight. Needless to say that the deep connection between both artists became immediately apparent. The idea was born to further develop this live collaboration with a number of select shows at favorite venues. In 2019 SYNC. played several 4 to 6 hours sets at The Pickle Factory (London), Concrete (Paris), Berghain (Berlin) and Technoon (Brussels). In 2022 both musicians returned with an updated set presented at Basilar (Portugal), Nitza (Barcelona) and Bassiani (Tbilisi).

Collaboration and improvisation form the basis for this showcase of contemporary techno. SYNC. is a hybrid sonic rollercoaster in the truest sense of the word. Intricate live programming and improvisation are combined with timed DJ interventions.

New Brvtalism No. 459 - Ginza Seven

From Europe’s southern tip in the Gibraltar-facing port city of Algeciras comes ORBE, the Spanish techno enthusiast whose potent beats have hammered out a pedigree path both as DJ and producer. Prevailing winds carried Fernando Sanz first to Seville to study sound engineering, later to Madrid where the fertile scene allowed him to build a community of music-minded friends that have put that city squarely on the map. Under these conditions, his work (what he terms a means of ‘contacting the future, the avant-garde’) has developed into something much deeper and more sophisticated. His love of artists like Brian Eno and Boards of Canada, and roots in breakbeat and drum and bass have informed a style that’s allowed him to take up the mantle as one of Spain’s most interesting talents. Under his self-titled record label (est. 2014) come his signature killer tunes, and in his work with names like Eduardo de la Calle and labels like Token, Hivern Discs, Axis and Mote Evolver a pole position at the forefront of modern techno. Fresh off his set on the Bassiani floor (14th March) comes this next Bassiani mix. Tensile rhythms that lurch ahead with supernatural power, an involute web of intelligent sounds that attest to his skill as selector. Bassiani Podcast 254 is an hour-long mash up of elfin beats, a vibrating hymn to the sounds of tomorrow, Orbe at the top of his game.

Coda Mix 050 - Cailín

As resident of Belfast’s free party collective Annaghtek (meaning ‘techno from the swamp’ when abbreviated in Irish), Illegal Swede has resisted the mainstream gaze of contemporary dance music, choosing instead to bask in the freedom of one of the most defiant things you can do as a DJ – play to people who are truly free in the wake of oppressive establishment and what is perceived to be the norm.

The Swede has taken his stylistic take on techno, hard groove, acid and hard house across Europe, playing throughout the entirety of Ireland, London, Brighton, Birmingham, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic with dates also locked in for Norway and France. Despite playing at shows outside of the free party scene, the Belfast based vinyl enthusiast has chosen specifically to link up with promoters and artists whose views align with his own, such as the infamous DSNT crew of Belfast, London's Stay Up Forever collective and Super Rhythm Trax boss Jerome Hill, all of whom have ties to rave culture in its unchained form.

Within his own productions, The Swede has carved the ethos of the free party community into his furious, acid laced techno compositions, with releases on Rebeltek and Planet Acid Techno & Stay Up Forever.

The politics of dance music grow more and more complex, but, in The Swede, we have a glimpse into the uncensored utopia of a bygone era, whilst keeping one eye firmly on the future.
