The Hits

The story begins with the original track ‘Back To The Streets’ by Rudy Norman, first out on a 7” as the B side to lead track – ‘Harmony’ in 1980 on New Day Records. It has long been a killer cult cut known in collector circles, with the opening solo Rhodes becoming a sample for underground producers far and wide. It was included on a couple of comps along the way, Late Night Tales Presents After Dark - Nocturne (2015) curated by Bill Brewster, and on Seafaring Strangers - Private Yacht (2017). Rudy Norman got in touch with The @flying-mojito-bros out of the blue as he was into their work and he was keen for them to rework the track.

The Flying Mojito Bros are two disco mescoleros pioneering the great electronic wilderness. With their boots firmly planted in dusty seventies sunsets, their productions take cosmic country rock and funk to modern day dancefloors via New York Latin Disco and Acid house. Think the first summer of love meeting the second, where Crosby, Stills and Nash meet at the Haçienda, The Doors dance at Shoom, where The Orb meets Woodstock, and you’ll be in the right sonic space. These acid cowboys are producer and musician Ben Chetwood, and DJ and collector Jack Sellen, their disco-house-gone-country sound turning crowds loose in clubs, desert dances, late-night festival tents at Glastonbury and around the pool at Pikes.

On this release The Flying Mojito Bros have worked their magic on this cult AOR gem, and in the words of Rudy Norman himself “They’ve brought ‘Back To The Streets’ to the future”. Mastered for the first time on 12” vinyl alongside official remixes commissioned by the artist, in a package to please lovers of glistening disco reworks and those would love to bag a copy of the original. On the digital package, these new versions will resonate with a world that wants to get back out there and bond meaningfully with others. The artwork is a colourful and cosmic reimagining of the original cover art via illustrator Nick Potts, reflecting the bros’ transportation of Rudy’s West Coast vibe into one of their own Southwestern desertscape settings.

A side is ‘Welcome (To My Africa)' which immediately kicks off with a sumptuous rolling bass, distinctive hi-hat and rhythmic bongos to draw you in. In an instant, you’re surrounded by layers of African rhythm guitar, sharp brass and woodwind with the most infectious vocal chants. This really is Afro-Funk at its finest. A bouncing, rocking, rhythmic bomb of a track which will fill any dance floor.

NYC leftfield disco darlings Phenomenal Handclap Band made their first appearance on RNT by way of a collab with JKriv in 2022, and now they return for an offering all their own, the Burning Bridges EP. The title track is a groundbreaking hypnotic post-disco pop gem, and Prins Thomas turns the tempo knob up a few clicks and launches into an extended interstellar  excursion with his remix. On the B side the cinematic slow burner ‘It Was The Summer’ begins sparse and hazy and builds to a driving peak of backbeat rhythm and an insistent vocal soliloquy. Each Other (Justin Strauss & Max Pask) then take the tune straight to the rave with arpeggiated and acidic synths, recasting the haunting vocals as a modern New Wave anthem.

The Summer Cure (Cole's Bajalearic Mix)

Naya Beat, which translates from Hindi as 'new beat', is focused on uncovering foundational electronic sounds from the subcontinent and South Asian diaspora through reissues, remixes and compilations. 

It found quick success with its first release, 'Naya Beat Volume 1: South Asian Dance and Electronic Music 1983 - 1992', followed by a rare 1985 Hindi New Wave album by Pinky Ann Rihal. 

The label now offers up the first of two releases based around the music of cosmic disco pioneer, Studio 54 icon and jazz improviser Asha Puthli, an artist who has recorded, sung or shared the stage with the likes of Roy Ayers, Alice Coltrane, Grace Jones, Barry White, Andy Warhol and many more. From David Mancuso's The Loft, to Giorgio Moroder's early work with Donna Summer, to hip-hop where she has been sampled extensively, Asha's musical influence and impact is profound. 
She was the first artist of South Asian descent to successfully crossover and make a mark on dance, jazz and pop culture in the West.

For this LP, Naya Beat tracked down the long mythologised original stems and recordings of Puthli's most seminal albums, including ‘The Devil is Loose’, and working closely with Asha, they have tasked a series of producers inspired by her work to remix her music.

Label heads Turbotito & Ragz flip 'One Night Affair' into a leggy disco celebration with sweeping synths and bright effects.

This is a stunning collection of remixes that pay homage to the originals while taking them into new sonic territory. The most prolific music maker in the UK (trust us, it’s a fact!) is back at Paper with another serious selection of chopped up & rearranged slices of dance music. Edits is such a yawn these days but when they’re done properly (and we mean properly) they come out sounding like this insanely good E.P.

Title track is a Summer infused drop of feel good house music with bags of soul & swag that will fit perfect into any warm up set & will guarantee back slaps & big grins a plenty!

Bet It’s a Groove sounds like a lost track from an educational film of the late 70’s with bleeps & bloops straight out of a Moog. Bags of psychedelic flavours for the more whacky party settings (which we all love!)

P=funk flavours ahoy on Leroy. Full on synth workout with funky as heck guitars around some mayhem sounding synths & spaced out stabs. Imagine a breakdance party with added mushrooms and you’re half way there.

Things slow down for Shivery which is a real woozy number and harks back to sounds of Lemon Jelly at their most psych. Real nice one for all those lucky enough to hold a beachside residency in hotter climates though can sound equally as good at home whilst blazing a zoot or having a cup of tea.

Work It closes off the party and is a solid slab of ‘end of the night’ vibes with a nod to Sabres Of Paradise sounding loveliness. Throbbing bassline & arp action with various mad sounds all building & building towards the lights coming on. Great finish….see you next week!
