The Mistral, is a strong wind that commonly occurs in southern France, blowing down from the north along the lower Rhône River valley toward the Mediterranean Sea. As the wind reaches the Rhône delta, gusts can often hit speeds of 130 km (about 80 miles) per hour.

This recording was taken from the bedroom window of an old "Mas" (farmhouse) just outside Barbentane (Bouches-du-Rhône) with the mics pointing directly at a Plane tree (platane)at least 250 years old.

Strong "Mistral" Wind - Barbentane, France

A gentle, calming soundscape as the low tide slowly began to rise and sea water trickled back up the bay. A group of seals were lying silently on the sand bank opposite and European Herring Gulls and Black-Headed Gulls began to call out to one another.

Trees Creaking in Roaring Winter Wind

During a severe wind storm, I revisited the yellow popular from this winter storm recording: https://soundcloud.com/acousticnature/tree-creaks-inside-an-oak

This time, I stuck a pair of EM272 microphones inside the tree cavity instead of putting my SASS in front of the opening. I mainly did this to protect the mics from the heavy rains that came during the night. 

I was really amazed at how well the tree insulated the mics from the outer world's sounds. Even the torrential downpour we received sounded like a gentle drizzle. 

When I popped the SD card into my computer the next morning, I was surprised that the popular made less noise than the previous recording, despite the increased wind speeds. 

I think this may have been due to 2 things: the warmer weather and deeper cracking along the the main trunk. I believe both these factors gave the tree more "wiggle-room" and caused less direct rubbing.

This recording is a compilation of 27 interesting clips throughout the night ranging in length from 3-111 seconds.

This unedited and unprocessed recording (from an unattended overnight recording) runs from 05:16 to 06:56. It was recorded at a location about 315 metres from the shore of the Coorong lagoon, at the nearest point, and about 3.5 kilometres from the ocean shore, at the nearest point, on the far side of the dunes that enclose the lagoon, from which the eternal environing ‘Coorong roar’ emanates.

This soundscape was recorded at dusk in an old disused quarry just outside Lérouville. The light flute tones we hear are Common Midwife Toads that had just began calling. We also hear birds singing from the surrounding trees, as well as the occasional call of Parsley Frogs in the distance.
