From the prolific cultural epicenter of Montréal, Marie has emerged as one of the foremost electronic artists in contemporary underground pop today. As a long-time member of Les Momies de Palerme, Hotel Monochrome, DKMD, and Essaie Pas, Marie has continued to hone her many talents in Montréal’s fervent experimental communities for much of her adult life. Davidson’s intimate solo work is embodied through a host of synthesizers and drum machines that coalesce in synchronized harmony, punctuated by Marie’s hypnotic vocal delivery, sung and spoken in both French and English. Her third album Un Autre Voyage demonstrates her heightened compositional skill behind a sequencer as well as her singular ability to anesthetize the senses through the documentation of her own serial pattern of experiential growth.

For our latest mix, we have called on the Acid House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Beard Scientist and Freelance Disco Consultant, Sean Johnston (https://soundcloud.com/hardwaybros), to end the year on a high.

Sean’s DJ’ing style described by https://soundcloud.com/factmag as “Future Disco” is hard to pin down to one convenient genre, taking in house, disco, re-edits, techno and frankly anything else that takes his fancy.

Alongside https://soundcloud.com/andrew-weatherall he runs and DJ’s at A Love From Outer Space. The night’s manifesto is to never knowingly exceed 122bpm and is home to a multitude of genres including ambient, balearica, dub, krautrock, post punk, proto house, un-disco and other curiosities from the pair’s extensive record collections.

“Here’s a classic form that has been abused, lived in, faded, worn thin, patched up and yet is totally unique. It’s my take on disco, but the description could equally apply to a great pair of jeans….”

Performance day is finally here – and our excitement has amplified tenfold. Tonight beholds the world-first performance between the London Contemporary Orchestra and Actress – which we have had the honour to commission and curate alongside the LCO, and will also broadcast live from the Barbican tonight. Today, we are celebrating with a Debut from notable cellist, composer, producer and LCO soloist, Oliver Coates.

His Upstepping mini-album opus – forthcoming on Moshi Moshi's contemporary classical and experimental label, PRAH Recordings – illustrates Coates' deeply contrasting interests in music. Having formerly collaborated with Jonny Greenwood, Mica Levi and now also Actress, and listing his direct influence from the likes of early Orbital and Photek, electronic reflections can easily be traced in the instrumental lyricism and classically versed composition patterns of each of Upstepping's eight tracks. On being asked about "Timelapse (Walrus)", Coates explained to us: "I was living in a hotel for a month because our flat got flooded, and listening to the chromatic steps of happy / sinister early nineties techno. Then I was taking cello harmonics and cutting off the fronts and making sample keyboards out of them. Everything that sounds like it could be a piano or keys starts from a piece of cello residue. The spoken audio is a small child saying ‘small child gets scared to death’. The body of the cello makes everything woody with the colours. I like techno made out of spruce."

The chamber echoed with the abrupt, stark cries of pleasure. From the depths of the kingdom the beasts of a nation roared. Lions, tigers, and the animals of the free world had spoken and they would rise to triumph amongst the great plains of a country in ruins. The burning sun cast its beaming rays over the golden sands and the black silhouette of a burnt out tree stood distinctively against the royal blue sky.

Serial Experiments - L#99 | Guest Mix: Hardway Bros

Cititrax is thrilled to present a full length LP entitled Adieux Au Dancefloor by Montreal based recording artist, Marie Davidson. Marie Davidson has emerged as one of the foremost electronic artists working in contemporary pop today. As a long-time member of Essaie Pas (DFA Records), Davidson has had the opportunity to hone her many talents. She has been participating in the city’s vibrant experimental community for much of her adult life. However, in 2012 she began to unveil compositions under her own name, revealing a solo artist who possessed the combined confidence and vulnerability required to write, produce and perform unaccompanied. Davidson’s intimate solo work is embodied through a host of synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines which coalesce in synchronized harmony, punctuated by vocals, half sung, half spoken in both French and English. She masterfully shapes the overall mood, themes, emotion, expression and intensity of her work, which gives the final result a distinctive, cinematic quality. 
With Adieux Au Dancefloor, Marie makes a slight departure from her last two releases, via Holodeck (2015) and Weyrd Son (2014), by creating her first fully dancefloor oriented piece of work. Through the 45 minutes of music that comprises the album, she experiments with pop structures, defines her voice, and layers rhythms to make complex and beautiful techno tracks. She closes the album with the title track in classic Chanson style.
Adieux Au Dancefloor will be released on October 6th. The record will be pressed on 160 gram white vinyl and will feature photographs by the equally talented Corinne Schiavone. The record will be housed in a full color printed heavyweight jacket along with matching printed inner sleeve. Pre-order available now. Digital release to follow.
