Music for Indoors 23 - GUYTWO (Pochette Surprise - Annecy)

Emmanuelle Parrenin [ensemble p♾️dcast by Maintenant Festival]. Emmanuelle Parrenin has always been a collector of sounds: she learned music in a clandestine and instinctive way by reproducing on a piano the melodies she hears escaping from the various rehearsal rooms of the family home, where music resonates from everywhere: her father directs the Parrenin Quartet, and her mother is a harp teacher.
In 1978, she released “Maison rose”, her first solo album, which played with all borders and styles, and which constituted a turning point in her musical and artistic career. In 1990, following a serious accident, she goes deaf. Modern medicine being powerless, she managed to heal by rehabilitating her ears through the sounds of her voice and the resonance of its instruments. Learning from this experience, she turned to healing music and music therapy and created Maïeuphonie, which she practiced for fifteen years in children’s institutes and psychiatric hospitals and teaches regularly at the International Center for Music Therapy. The 2000s marked the return to experimental music and the song. She met many musicians around the collective-record label “Les Disques Bien”, with whom in 2011, thirty years after “Maison rose”, she recorded “Maison cube”.

MFI 30!!!💥 Ecoutes au Vert is thrilled to release this wonderful mix by two seasoned Berlin cats!

@Skism & @Hendrik_Stein probably crossed paths at a smokey Party 15 years ago. Being socialized with all kinds of music and deeply shaped by clubbing in Berlin, both got pretty bored with the Minimal & Tech-House dictatorship of the late 00s.

Starting to upload their own mixes, they became online friends. While @Hendrik_Stein was exploring the roots of club music and got lost in the obscurest realms of Disco, @Skism had a long-time addiction with Kosmische, Ambient and German Psychedelics, filed under Krautrock.

Since both of them are busy bees in the music and media worlds, it took another 10 years until they finally shared the decks at the @pastforward show on Cashmere Radio. A while after, they received a very unusual donation by an anonymous patron - the obscurest part of an unused and well-aged record collection! @Skism is a music lover & record collector (also known as the Wasn-part of DJ duo @wasnundwunderwaffel) who loves music so much that he sometimes has a hard time just working. He believes that there’s no bad genre and no bad instrument, just bad music.
 
@Hendrik_Stein is equally deep into music, if not more. A DJ and record collector who's been around for a long time, playing in many places and running with @Menqui and @kryptic_dj, the Past Forward broadcast on Cashmere Radio. With his partner in music & life @frinda_di_lanco, they craft the Ciao Amore Baci Parties and @avec_plaisir_records label. 

In 2023, Stein crafted mixes for the H.A.N.D. series by @sound-metaphors, @eclectics28 in the UK, and the long-running @the-dream-chimney. 

With Avec Plaisir Records, he founded a platform to release hand-picked rarities, working with the likes of cosmic legend DJ Stefan Egger as well as digging private press record releases from the 1970s to 90s.

Music for Indoors 30 - SKISM & HENDRIK STEIN (lodown/Avec Plaisir/Cashmere Radio - Berlin)

Ulyap is a village in the Caucasus, where one can find an enormous number of accordion and harmonica players. “Ulyap Songs:  Beyond Circassian Tradition” represents an attempt to document ancient bards‘ chants and their entanglement with popular rural heritage as well as Soviet culture during modern times, through a critical prism. Interacting with a rich book on the subject, this issue reflects on a music phenomenon involving talented female and male musicians, performing in lively (and sometimes festive) social dynamics. It does so by revealing important songs of the repertoire on the one hand, inviting original artists to experiment with Ulyap songs on the other.

In 2021, Flee Project met with Nalchik-based music journalist Bulat Khalilov. The music enthusiast kept on speaking about a fascinating vernacular musical genre from the North Caucasus, involving a lot of heavy drinking and which had absorbed urban elements of petit-criminal as well as Gulag-returnees’ chanson. A few months after this encounter, the FLEE collective traveled across the Caucasus to interview and record local toughies, wedding musicians, bards and researchers to make sense of this peculiar folklore. The expedition culminated in the visit of Ulyap, a tiny village home to many virtuoso accordion players that gave its name to this festive music tradition. Three years later, forced to readapt the project to the many issues and challenges that the war in Ukraine has brought up, the art collective finally publishes a book, including essays, artworks, and unpublished pictures depicting the colors of life in this forgotten (post)soviet underworld. The book encompasses the contributions of: Lina Tsrimova, Bulat Khalilov, Madina Pashtova, Milana Khalilova, Nikita Rasskazov, Almagul Menlibayeva, Akhmat Bikanov, Olivier Duport, Alan Marzo.

Musically, the double LP conists of rare and unpublished archives as well as recordings made by FLEE, Ored recordings and Nikita Rasskazov over the last years in various locations of the Caucasus. These original celebration and drinking songs performed by group of professional and amateur musicians alike have been used as a creative fabric by sonic sound artists and musicians: Zongamin, Misha Sultan, Emmanuelle Parrenin & Colin Johnco, Simone Aubert, Valentina Goncharova, Minami Deutsch, G.A.M.S. & Vatannar, Jrpjej & Ben Wheeler.

The transmedia object comprehends of an LP and book in an innovative packaging made out of traditionnal wool. FLEE 005 will be officially released January the 19th of 2024, with launches around the world and followed by a traveling exhibition.
