Time has come for Into The Deep to launch its very own podcasts serie. The idea is to broadcast a very large spectrum of the music that moves us, no genres or styles barriers. 

Essentially music carefully selected and played by people we show the highest respect for their contribution to the scene. 

Either by delivering greatness behind the decks of all the clubs and festivals worldwide, or by their ability to excavate undiscovered yet fascinating sounds and textures to please our ears, our minds or our hips.

If you ever went digging in flea markets in Paris and its suburbs, you probably bumped into Dusty Fingers, head down in the crates with a flair for obscure French productions from the 80's, including synthpop, afro, zouk anything in between...
He is an established DJ in town who had the opportunity to travel far away from French boarders (incl. South Africa, Canada, Eastern Europe, USA and more) looking for news sounds and textures to feed his eclectic sets.

Episode 21 comes from the West Coasts' finest - Nina BC. 

"The mix is kind of a sequel to this (https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/EvJv7M2E5Gt2KA878) which I made last year. But that one was more a reflection of solitude and longing, and this one is dedicated to friendship and coming home... I wanted it to feel like a soundtrack, with each song a new scene. The opening and closing tracks are from the yo la tengo s/t to Kelly Reichardt’s beautiful buddy / road movie Old Joy. They’re called “leaving home” and “driving home.” The mix is also inspired by her films as portraits of companionship. I also included music from some of my favourites, old and new, ylt, penguin cafe orchestra, the garbage & the flowers, and flowchart."

DJ Earl Grey aka Nik Thorup takes us beyond the dancefloor and into the realm of the cerebral. During his month-long residency at Waxflower, Nik spun a cornucopia of captivating and unique records that always left us hungry for more.

We’re still not sure how Nik managed to intertwine so many polarising genres so effortlessly. Few DJs can stroll from ambient to jazz, from folk to dub, making it sound so organic. Maybe there’s a link to be drawn between this kind of musical curation and some of the more adventurous wine-making processes we’ve come to love at Waxflower. Skin-contact wine often leads to bolder, more intense, and less predictable palates. 

Shady wine-making comparisons aside, it was an honour for us to have Nik play for the whole month. We’ve spent plenty of time listening to his recorded sets, so it was a treat to experience his talent live at Waxflower.

008 Dj Earl Grey

The first mixtape released on Best Effort is by Naarm (Melbourne) based DJ/ writer, Sophie McAlister. A Sooky La La at heart, this mix is comprised of Sophie’s most sentimental songs which seem to exude the palpable feeling of Saudade, a Portuguese word that can be described as ‘a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy.’ The tracks weave through 110 minutes of unrequited love and melancholic sounds that range from MPB, Psych, Folk, Middle Eastern Jazz and Soul, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and longing.

Crafted with heartbreak from reel to reel, these feelings on tap(e) hope to offer tender respite to the listener’s jaunt down memory lane. With a nod to the past and anticipation for what’s to come, this tape invites you to welcome new spirits from the unwelcomed lull of recent despondency. Sometimes revelling in our most forsaken experiences can spark new life into what used to consume us with grief.
