New Canada Engines is a spinoff album from Gravity Wing, my novel and soundtrack set on the planet of New Canada. In the story, NCE a company that builds spaceship engines. Founded by a pioneering couple on this new world, they company makes huge strides in innovation, eventually dominating the spaceship engine market.

For FAWM 2017 I am testing and building spaceship engines through ambient glitch soundscapes. Each track represents an engine built by NCE. The next track is a new layer or rework, building on and extrapolating from the previous piece, just as if each piece were a spaceship engine: built, test-flown, reworked, improved.

NCE 2 is the first proper build. Flight tests are being carried out.

I composed this track based on NCE 1 - prototype, which was entirely comprised of samples of a singing airplane engine. To this I added touches of synths, acoustic viola harmonics, more bitcrusher, and digital strings subtly quoting fragments of Serge’s Song (http://vimeo.com/clioem/serge), a classical piece that is an essential part of the Gravity Wing soundtrack.

On March 20, 2025, Tom Collier began a simple musical experiment: to compose one miniature every day for an entire year. Each piece became a small exploration—sometimes playful, sometimes poetic, sometimes mischievous, always searching for a moment of surprise.

Although the daily challenge concluded after a year, the project continues to evolve. Under the name Caricatunes, Tom keeps creating concise musical worlds that invite listeners to pause, smile, wonder, or simply experience something unexpected. His work is driven by the belief that even the shortest piece can tell a complete story.

Tom Collier is a Belgian composer, conductor, clarinetist and educator. He studied clarinet at LUCA School of Arts (formerly the Lemmens Institute) and later earned a Master's degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, where he studied with Wim Henderickx and Luc Van Hove. In 2019, his orchestral work Spirits was selected for performance by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and his compositions have received several awards, including the Silver Medal for Music of the Province of West Flanders.

Alongside his work as a composer, Tom is an active conductor and teacher. He teaches at the Arts Academy in Torhout, and regularly collaborates on interdisciplinary projects that bring together music, visual arts, dance and literature.

Whether writing for orchestra, chamber ensemble or a miniature lasting less than a minute, Tom's music shares a common thread: curiosity, imagination, craftsmanship and a touch of gentle humour.
