Daptone Records imprint Dunham Records present Love In The Wind, the debut album from the Sha La Das featuring harmonic sensibilities rooted in doo wop, blues, and soul. The album was truly a family affair within both the Daptone and Schalda family.

Produced by Thomas Brenneck, Love In The Wind features a number of the players that have helped define the Daptone Sound including members of The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Menahan Street Band. And, at the heart of the record, there are the four Schaldas: three talented brothers and the father who taught his boys group harmonies on the stoop of their Staten Island home growing up.

Sha La Das - Just for a Minute

“Chrysalis” is the second stage of SunSquabi’s three-part series that started with the track “Caterpillar” and will also include the forthcoming “Night Moth.” All three songs find SunSquabi focusing on biology and evolution as themes for inspiration during their writing process and show off a metamorphosis to the way their music has come into fruition recently. “The metamorphosis becomes more evident as these stages are revealed,” multi-instrumentalist Kevin Donohue explains.

Nothing else epitomizes an acronym quite like J.E.D.I.—“Jazz Electronic Dance Improvised.” Brainchild of Brazilian Girls’ Aaron Johnston, the group’s debut track “Back Atcha” kicks the audience in the face with uptempo funk reminiscent of a Headhunters vibe. From there, it stews into a satisfying house groove laced with a saxophone solo courtesy of Dominic Lalli. As the track ramps back up with its sweaty, dance-like funk motifs Johnson’s vision is evident—J.E.D.I. is a project that is, “fun for you mind and fun for your body.”

Track Description:  “Knuckle Sandwich” throws it back to groundbreaking funk of the 70s with remnants of Graham Central Station’s thumping bass and Ohio Players’ pocket-laced vocal hooks. Setting the table for a full-length release on Color Red, the lead single embraces sonic analog recording techniques on the Tascam 388 in tandem with modern production elements. Freekbass approached the session with a groove and bass line and Rico Jones (drums, P-Funk), Sky White (keyboards), and producer/Color Red Founder Eddie Roberts (guitar, The New Mastersounds/Matador! Soul Sounds) fleshed it out for a fully-stacked funky sandwich. Sammi Garrett of Turkuaz gives the song a punchy vocal treatment for the crowning knock-out punch to deliver a track that sets the pace for the entire record and leaves the audience wondering what will happen in round 2.

"We wanted to create a track which would be a table-setter for the album, and have the sonics of classic bass and funk sounds with modern production elements. “Knuckle Sandwich” was that track . We wrote it in the Color Red studio on an early afternoon , and along with Eddie’s engineering and production skills, we were recording it an hour later. There was a very intense energy and bodily-feel with this track. I, Freekbass, came up with the initial groove and bassline, and along with Rico, Sky, and Eddie we developed the groove and the song. Then Sammi, after hearing the track, came in with her lyrics for the knock-out punch bringing the track to the next level."

Track Description: ShwizZ transports listeners back to the golden era of 70s psychedelic jazz-rock in “Hit the Deck.” The band laid the pavement with a hard-driving, technical bass line at the forefront which is a defining characteristic of fusion music. Each piece of the puzzle sprouted from that with garnishes of Rhodes chords, a striking guitar melody, and a tight drum groove to tie it together. After catching word of Color Red by chatting with Freekbass at a festival in upstate New York, it seemed like a perfect fit to capture “Hit the Deck” with straight-to-tape recording methods and Eddie Roberts taking the wheel on production. “Hit the Deck” will be followed up by a full-length album with a full-bodied roster of guests to be released spring 2020.

Artist Quote: We we're all quite pleased with the outcome of the track.  Recording directly to tape really captured the vibe we had set out to create.  The whole process, from reaching out to CR to going to the studio, tracking and mixing, was completely flawless.  Eddie was super easy to work with and provided the perfect amount of producing tips to keep us on track with what he needed, but still be free to make our musical vision come to life.  , "Hit The Deck" came out amazingly.  It was a very fitting song for the production style that Color Red has been doing.  The use of recording to tape, old school mic'ing techniques and having to perform and nail the track live really helped get us a quality recording.  Eddie was extremely professional and sat back and let us do our thing, while also providing his production expertise when necessary. The overall experience was a delight from start to finish and the process was professional and rewarding.
