Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

DJ Deetron’s side project Deetron presents Soulmate is synonymous with raw, Detroit-influenced techno, often played live as part of a three vinyl set-up and at unforgiving tilt. The Bern native’s solo venture had been half dormant, until in 2022, the alias was revived at full capacity with the first in a string of releases for Münich’s legendary Ilian Tape. Magnetic beats that delivered a contemporary take on the classics, rehashed and given his personal slant. Blending stripped-back, funky cuts with unrivalled technical smarts and a sharp instinct for percussion, his layered sets have been a testament to his abilities as dancefloor provocateur from Berlin to Bangkok, Cape Town to Medellin. Released September 4th, his latest outing on wax is four-tracker Code, mile-a-minute breaks that offer a further glimpse into his sonic world, a further development of his hypnotising tribal frequencies. The Soulmate project’s had a second wind and it’s clear he’s here to stay. - Hey Orb, how’s it going? What’s been happening lately?
Really good actually, just relocated to Naarm a few months back and feeling invigorated and inspired again by all the friends and music this city has. I've been collaborating on projects and going out again to gigs which has been such a good thing for my practice as I hit a wall a few years back with music.

- Tell us a bit about this set - where was it recorded, and was the idea or direction behind it?
This mix is a live 2h recording from the good homies Stock Grazing label night with Upsammy and myself at Shadows Club (previous Sideway RIP) in Ngambri and Ngunnawal Country / Canberra. It's a 2 hour warm up for Upsammy in hands down one of the best sounding clubs in the country, so it had weight. I wanted the set to feel warm & adequate to the space (sub heavy), reflecting my liking for deep listening. No specific direction but a curated sound for sure. 

- ⁠Are there any tracks or moments in the set that feel extra special or defining to you?
The first 25 minutes of the set I'd say define me the most. Immersive.

Sweden's Olof Dreijer is one of electronic music's most beloved outsiders. His work as half of The Knife alongside his sibling Karin is the stuff of experimental pop legend, while his solo output is just as wonderfully weird. He showed that again in September with Iris, his second EP on Dekmantel, which featured two originals that twist textured beats and smudged chords, intricate sound designs and hyper-real melodies.

Across his 75-minute mix for us this week, Dreijer works quickly through everything from carnival house to zippy club music, mutant bass and thumping techno. Plenty of his own music features, including his recent remix of Björk, Rosalia, plus cuts from DJ Hyperactive, Jeff Mills, DJ Rush and many more. It's a full throttle selection for the peak time.
