Operative since 2019, Rennes-based, French Coldwave trio DEPHT MOD (@depht_mod), made of Mimmo + Reff.K + Thdr [@mimmo-assi-nf + @antonin-lecreff + @thdrmusic], are going to drop their second EP, "Catch the Blue", out February 22 via Tripalium Corp.(@tripalium-corp.)

Sometimes smooth and suave, sometimes aggressive, their music is a perpetual motion, an ever-changing world, a meeting between the flesh and the machines. Composed with much improvisation, made up with 80s Synthwave, Industrial Techno and Italo Disco, their hypnotic sound loops and harrowing voices have the smell of sweat and poetry. Inspired by Bataille, Baudelaire and Ballard amongst many others, these songs are talking about quests, desires, energies, meetings.

"Weapons of the weak is a mysterious tribute to fallen warriors from the future. It revolves around the idea of everyday resistance in the face of hopelessness, made by common people, using the means available to them.

'Extinct' is a blurred, obscure warning that culminates with the forecast of extinction. Despite the evident hopelessness that this warning brings, it is accompanied by an homage to those too weak to change the course of events, but that nevertheless tried. 'Picking quarrels and provoking trouble' is the crime that citizen journalist Zhang Zhan was accused of when reporting on the Wuhan outbreak. Citizen journalists were one of the sources of uncensored information during the outbreak in China. She was convicted to four years in prison, where she remains as of 2022. 'Murderous femmes' is an homage to survivors of partner violence. It reflects a profound disappointment in a system that often fails to protect women. It is inspired by the stories of women who fought back and killed their long-time abuser, with some ending in prison. 'Alexander Navalny' samples moments of the arrest of the former Russian politician who stepped into the spotlight by reporting on corruption in Russia. After a failed murder attempt during a flight, and returning to Russia, he was arrested. As of 2022, Alexander Navalny remains in prison. 'Luanda leaks' twists samples of one interview of the hacker Rui Pinto. Rui Pinto released several documents that contained evidence that Isabel dos Santos, once Africa's wealthiest woman, has profited from two decades of corruption in Angola. These documents also showed that this would not be possible without the aid of western firms and individuals. Despite being a resource-rich country, more than half of Angola's population still lives below the poverty line."

After a long illness,  Midnight Totem, a Rennes-based artist, started producing electronic music at the end of 2020. Inspired by Aphex Twin, Extrawelt, Muslimgauze or Alva Noto, she delivers their 3rd release, "Race to Live", for Tripalium Corp : a cassette album made of dark and immersive atmospheres, but also naive melodies. Somewhere between ambient, low-fi techno, trip-hop and electronica, these 9 tracks are about her urgency to live after a painfull childhood and a long illness, and how music saved her. “Owelle": frenchified word derived from the English expression “Oh well”. Repurposed by Valérie Siron as her pseudonym to reflect her work ethos: serious, but without making a fuss.

Surfacing from Geneva’s club culture with a graphic design background, Owelle’s drive to synergise the audio and the visual power her expression of creative identity. Her compositions are imagined and built without boundaries, albeit replete with nods to previous genres ranging from early 2000s breakbeat, braindance and broken beat techno.

Intrigued by sensory immersion, Owelle further laces her art with interactive tools including programming, sound spatialisation and installation. Diving into a spatiotemporal journey, subtly incorporating their uses into her musical works. By blending her passion for diligent sound designing, field recordings and psychedelic vocals is how Owelle presents her approach to experimental music. Owelle’s creativity offers an intrinsic connection of her tailored rhythms and melodies to birth an original hybrid of sound and visual art. 

The music within this record questions the importance of sound in relation to the individual’s environment. To blur the border between noise and aesthetically pleasing. To ride the waves between discomfort and delight and to find the potentially hidden role of situational awareness and relating it to musical endeavours derived from the emotions within.
