Catalognumber 23 – what else is to say? While we’re feeling the spirit of William S. Burroughs blessing this very vinyl-enigma, &ME went particularly mysterious ways to transcend the category ‘dance track’ for this one.
The meditation through bass had been the major discipline of some of his latest cuts, but what you’ll find on this A-side, one could certainly call the perfection of somnambulistic peaktime-fever. The way he’s kneading the lower frequencies, how he’s channeling the expansion and decay of bass must inevitably lead to some aroused moaning. Good vocal-selection, for that matter! Then there are those tension building synths and a staccato-frenzy in the break that might be the ultimate ecstasy-trigger of the season.
“Locust” on B comes in with some smoothly looped E-guitar-coolness, adding whispering hi-hats and a comparatively rich percussive architecture. But then again: rolling bass barrels like a signature and a defence breaking build up that’s ensued by liberating pressure compensation in mighty breaks. Two demonstrations of understated and sophisticated peaktime-emphasis, so to say. Or differently put: a flawless double-A-side.

East London's Simbad is a character who prefers to remain in the shadows.
Minds in the industry know him as one of the most gifted engineers out there and switched on lovers of bass from his many remixes and 2008's acclaimed LP 'Supersonic Revelation'.
Collaborator with Zed Bias, Phil Asher and Karizma, he's produced for Roots Manuva and a close affiliate of Gilles Peterson and his Brownswood label. Most recently he's remixed Deetron, Quantic and Cooly G and he's worked with Mala in Cuba. Chances are you've probably already got Simbad's gold-encrusted gems in your artillery and didn't even know it.
As a DJ, he's simply wicked. Embracing everything from classic rare groove, disco and soul to Y3K funk, footwork and world music, his selection hinges on stone cold quality above all else.
Simbad, we salute you! He's laid us down a superb mixtape chocked full of unreleased (*) good shit.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Deaf Safari is an audio collage of subjects that interest me and speak of the world I live in.
It is an album composed of sampled recordings from the media landscape that has been the soundtrack to my life over the last ten years.

The most important development in my current music and as can be heard on Deaf Safari has been my understanding of the beauty and power of the spoken word. I have experienced severe indifference to contemporary pop and electronic music as a whole over the last many years, as I have felt that social comment of any relevance has been ignored by music in general.
Deaf Safari attempts to bring sociopolitical comment into my music without taking any specific stand.
Sampled outside of musical influence directly from the news; from preacher sermons or from contemporary African documentaries.
I have finally created a story with sound that I feel accurately conveys my personal experience with the African world I live in.

My musical influences on this album lie mostly with local Kwaito house. Deaf Safari is an experiment within certain boundaries of the 4/4 genre, to create my own South African "house" album.
I am proud and inspired about the South African Kwaito house scene.
However, as with my first three albums, "Thin Shoes In June“ (2001) - "4/4 Down The Stairs“ (2002) and "Dark Days Exit“ (2005), I am still interested in making strange and evocative music.

American Roots music from the earlier periods of the 20th century has deeply resonated with me during the making of this album.
The incredible field recordings by Alan Lomax of Negro prison and chain gang work songs, and the
beautiful early recordings of artists such as Leadbelly have had a major influence on Deaf Safari.

I am truly excited to release this album and to start performing in the music world again. It has been ten years since I released "Dark Days Exit , and although I have been purposefully absent from the music world, I have none the less never stopped making music.
I feel that I have finally arrived at a mature and challenging stage in my pursuit of making emotional music of relevance .

The first Musik For Autobahns was a delight: softly-softly ambient and subtle cuts from the likes of Move D, Suzanne Kraft, Roman Flügel and plenty more besides. Even amongst Rush Hour's bounty that year, it stood proudly out. A ripple of excitement went through BR HQ upon finding out Gerd Janson was lining up a second, with no shortage of marquee signings all coming correct with their A game.

A number of heads come together to translate these thoughts into sound - from Fort Romeau's Drive-esque "Seleno" joyride through to the propulsive "Melancholy" of Disco Nihilist. Perhaps none elicit as many feels as the enveloping opener from Leon Vynehall though.

As well as being a mesmeric mimic of accelerating down Bundesautobahn 5 at daybreak, "Midnight on Rainbow Road" got our Debut nod for three main reasons: firstly, it kicked off last year's sublime set from Gerd & Ata (so, about time); second, it's a welcome return for Mr Vynehall after a richly deserved breakout year; third, dude's got previous with N64 titling. And that's something we can all get behind.

Not pompoous string arrangements fuel this album with grandeur, but rather the notion of a consensual nod, which has evolved within Marbert Rocel over the years.  “In the Beginning” is the fourth album by Marbert Rocel, a living utopia and a tart kiss for every purist genre lover. Nothing is hewn raw on here, rather sculptured delicately. Percussion is tickling from synth pads like dew, and the songs welcome you like good friends. Like Tinkerbell, Spunks voice guides through this strange familiar world, moving past big feelings and small gestures, to finally lead to where it all started: “In The Beginning”.

Manoo moves Emilie Nana’s 80s Janet Jackson & Prince inspired Music, shaping a bouncy groove filled colourful exchange between vocal and melody. This inspiring vocal “Music is the best part of him” is enriched by the simplistic layering of rich exchanges between the composer and production mastermind, Manoo. 

Beanfield & Thomas Herb take this Nana-esque bass beast Tolstoy’ Changes, bending the range to deliver a dancefloor destroyer. Maintaining the original feeling of bewitchment, the extension of this production details a dark haunted house beat, beating the late arriving voice to give the listener a lucid layer of enchantment. 

Floyd Lavine stripped Black Panther Party inspired The Meeting Legacy and stamped his distinctive sound onto this slow stalking symbol of struggle. Lavine gives it a unique bunker feel, placing it both in the context of revolutionary battle and dancefloor hedonism.
